DPP4 Enzyme Deficiency? Food Ideas…

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

So… you’ve been told (or suspect) you have a DPP4 enzyme deficiency. The 2 most common food issues with this deficiency are wheat (sometimes gluten) and dairy.  In order to get this enzyme working properly (to stop the addictive nature of the food and create a healthier gut and brain connection) it really needs to be cold turkey for the offending food.  These are very different from allergies, intolerances and energy-mismatches which can be going on quite separately in your body.  It takes at least 3 months for the wheat opioids to be out of the body – and at least 3 weeks for the dairy opioids to be released.  Other foods which may create this affect are sugars, processed rice and alcohol.  This opioid effect can create ANY BRAIN SYMPTOM that drugs can…

Wheat Alternatives:

I know – cutting out wheat – what a chore!  But imagine life where your brain functions better, you have more energy, less pain and your memory is fabulous!

Firstly there are many gluten-free products available these days:

  • rice crackers
  • corn crackers
  • rye – ryvitas etc
  • many brands of gluten free breads

Obviously there’s the danger of overloading on gluten free goodies – just because it’s gluten free doesn’t mean it’s healthy!  Read the packaging and also determine how much sugar, how many carbohydrates there are, expecially if weight or tiredness are an issue.

Dairy Alternatives

  • goat’s milk (if kinesiology says it’s ok – sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t)
  • almond milk
  • soy milk – get non-genetically modified
  • rice milk – watch the sugar content – always add protein powder since it’s full of sugar

If it’s a real problem it may be easier to simply find food groups which avoid the need for ‘breads’ and ‘milks’ altogether…

  • quiche with lots of eggs & veggies
  • protein drinks (made with water/fruits)
  • soy/goat milk yoghurts
  • protein & veggies
  • lots of high protein, low carb recipes at
  • (we have all of the products mentioned on that site…)

Hopefully that helps a little, obviously come in for a larger chat – there may be a lot more to it!!

DPP4 Enzyme Deficiency? What does it mean??

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

We’ve been working with information about the DPP4 enzyme issues for kids (and adults) this year with some interesting results.  There is an enzyme (DPP4) we release from the intestines, which if it’s not working, foods such as wheat and dairy can create an ‘opioid’ effect in the body.

It is NOT an allergy and will NOT show up in allergy tests. In fact, we find (kinesiologically) that they are totally different things in the body.

Think about anything that happens to people on drugs – slurred speech, hyperactivity, stress, anxiety, paranoia, exhaustion, panic attacks…  and that can happen in people with a DPP4 enzyme deficiency.  It can also create moodswings such as anger to tears and increase violent tendencies.  It can also affect our pain receptors – kids will often injure themselves but not be hurt – that’s the opioid effect.

Because of the opioid effect, it’s a true addiction. We find it in kids with learning problems, autism and aspergers, ADD & ADHD, dyspraxia.

Over a period of time that will exhaust many organs of the body which are trying to deal with this opioid effect on a day by day basis.  Using kinesiology we have found this opioid effect happening due to wheat, dairy, soy (occasionally), sugar, wine and rice.  Once off the offending foods, it takes around 3 months for the ‘opioid particles’ to leave the body – which gives a great window of opportunity for us to heal the gut, detoxify whatever toxins (heavy metals, bacteria, candida) that are inactivating the enzymes and clean up the bloodstream.

When this DPP4 enzyme deficiency is rampant, the gut bacteria gets totally out of whack – the bacteria can change from good to bad and this bad bacteria can cause lots of issues to, such as bloating, burping, belching, wind, flatulence, diarrhoea, constipation. The bad bacteria can create other issues to, for example, they can convert insoluble heavy metals (the type we can’t absorb into the body) into soluble heavy metals (which we can easily absorb into our fat, brain, bones and muscle).

It’s worth finding out if there’s a DPP4 enzyme deficiency issue creating health issues for you or your family.

Infections: the simple and the complex…

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

In our anti-biotic world, infections are one of those things where naturopaths are challenged, not because our products don’t work, but because they do… at a much deeper level, quite often, than what our drug counterparts can do…

If we are getting infections regularly, what does it mean?

  • immune dysfunction (we can see how dysfunctional with a live blood screening/urinary indicans/multisticks
  • liver congestion – the liver is the 2nd filter of the body – just before the immune system (3rd filter).  If the liver is congested we are more likely to have viral, bacterial, fungal or parasitic particles storing in the liver, creating issues for us.
  • allergies – if our body is constantly dealing with allergies, it can’t focus on killing bacteria or viruses.  In fact, the body isn’t that great at multi-tasking – if we’re constantly dealing with ANY health problem – other things (such as cancer) can being created in the background without us knowing about it;
  • poor gut health – 70% of immunity is in the gut?  How’s your gut health?  We can check through live blood screening and urinary indicans tests.

What can we do?

  • Kinesiology balances on the immune system
  • Cellular Regeneration treatments to boost the immune system and detox viral and bacterial particles
  • Supplements are very strong these days – depending on what you have going on in your system there are different supplements for different conditions:
  1. Urinary Tract Infections: vitamin C, cranberry, crataeva etc
  2. Staph & Strep Infections: herbal throat spray, S&S homeopathic, Golden Seal, AndroNK
  3. Sinus Problems (usually bacterial): Allergeze; AndroNK; Herbal Nasal Spray
  4. General Poor Immunity: Ultra Flora Immune – works directly on the gut increasing our whole body immunity

So, give us a call if you want to get your infections under control…

ADD, ADHD, Autism, Aspergers, Memory Loss… is your brain inflamed?

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Brain Inflammation… sounds awful doesn’t it? Did you know that it’s impossible to have any of ADD, ADHD, Autism, Aspergers, Memory Loss without brain inflammation?  It’s an increasing problems these days:

  1. 1 in 12 kids have ADD/ADHD
  2. 1 in 91 kids have autism/aspergers (this was 1/1000 10 years ago…)
  3. 1 in 3-6 kids have allergies (very much linked with ADD/ADHD/Aspergers/Autism)
  4. 1 in 2 people over 50 years old will have dementia by 2030

Scary statistics!

But does it feel like there’s nothing that can be done? Medically it’s a matter of give this drug (a calming down drug) in the morning and this drug (another calming down drug) at night…  not to mention the side-effects and family stress associated with the problems of these conditions.

There are some things we can do immediately to start the process of reducing the inflammation in the brain!  Kinesiology helps us target the correct things for you and your family – not everyone needs every intervention, and that would be exhausting!

  1. Stop wheat, gluten and dairy: many kids have a DPP4 enzyme deficiency which creates an ‘opioid’ effect in the bloodstream which can literally make them act like they’re on drugs!  Hyperactivity, tantrums, exhaustion, brain-dead…
  2. Colourings, preservatives and flavourings: these overload metallothioneine pathways in the liver, the ‘particles’ create the inflammation in the brain, and cause hyperactivity and extreme anger symptoms in susceptible bodies…
  3. Salicylate Sensitivity: often in kids with nasal allergies, red rashes.  Salicylates are an aspirin-like substance that thin the blood (the liver, the skin, the gut – in susceptible people) and can cause huge problems where there’s an issue.
  4. Sugars, fructose, glucose issues: many kids don’t have an ability to break down sugars properly.  Kids foods are soooooo linked with sugars these days, all the pre-packaged spreads and biscuis, tiny teddies, fruit juices, cereals, muffins…  If there is ‘insulin resistance’ the body is not getting the sugar into the cells, insulin is floating around outside the cells – yep, creating more inflammation!
  5. Auto-Immune Components: Through live blood screenings and kinesiology we can find out if there’s the possibility of an auto-immune condition affecting the brain.  Current thinking with Autism (particularly) is that an old staph/strep infection is affecting the basal ganglia in the brain, directly affecting moods, behaviour and how we interact with our world around us.
  6. Heavy Metal toxicity: Lead, mercury, cadmium and aluminium (regularly in medications we give our children such as vaccines) are very well documented to  be a link in ADD, ADHD (lead particularly), Autism (aluminium and mercury particularly), Aspergers and Allergies
  7. LEAP Kinesiology: is a specific process done at New Leaf Natural Therapies that re-integrates the pathways of the brain.  The more toxic the brain is (the more inflammation, insulin, opioid-like-substances, sugars, flavourings, colourings, preservatives) the more likely our brain pathways won’t be functioning properly.  See if any of these problems sound familar for someone you love!

Amygdala stress: the amygdala is a part of the brain that is activated when we’re under stress.  IF we’re stressing, and we don’t get our logical and creative thought processes finding a solution quickly enough, we whip into an old ‘amygdala’ pattern.  (This is the same pattern that people with PTSD and Vietnam Vets know all about)  The amygdala holds patterns of:

  • fight and flight (these can be fully activated or have exhaustion)
  • pain and punishment circuits (kids who are constantly in trouble are easily ‘labelled’ and therefore their brains and always expecting the worst.  This doesn’t help behaviour in any circumstance where there’s always a pattern in place
  • escape, submission, freeze: some kids brains just ‘switch off’, they look like they’re ‘not paying attention’ but their brains are just overloaded and they can’t take anymore
  • rage, anger, frustration (need I say more?!?)
  • pleasure and reward centres – switched off!  this creates depression, anxiety, panic attacks, lack of enjoyment with day to day activities

Our Learning Enhancement Programme has been put together to get the best results and to save you $$$.  Ask about our 9 month programme (standard length of time for ‘normal’ learning and behavioural issues).  More complicated health problems take longer to resolve – but we’ll see how we’re going as we go through the sessions.

So… your insulin resistance is too high – on the way to diabetes?

Saturday, November 12th, 2011

You know, I hear it in my clinic each and every day – my doctor’s checked my blood sugar levels and I’m totally ok…  Doug or I check their insulin resistance and it’s in the high risk for diabetes.  It’s damaging and inflammatory and it’s NOT OK!

What is insulin resistance?

It means that when you eat carbohydrates (anything that turns into sugar – grains, sugar, flour, fruits, starchy vegies (potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, corn etc) creates insulin which, instead of creating energy, increases inflammation and is NOT giving you energy…  Your cell membranes are either not functioning properly – not allowing insulin inside the cells OR the internal pathways within the cells are getting jammed and not allowing the energy production from insulin.

Is insulin bad?

No.  It is a crucial hormone – each and every cell in your body requires it to make energy.

Is insulin resistance bad?  What health problems does insulin resistance cause?

Yes!  When insulin isn’t getting into our cells it becomes a very inflammatory and dangerous hormone which has the ability to create:

  • blood sugar issues
  • dizziness
  • diabetes
  • peripheral neuropathy
  • dementia
  • memory issues
  • degeneration of the nerves in our hands, feet and brain
  • chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia
  • insulin, being a hormone, if out of whack can create an imbalance with any other hormone

How can I find out if I have insulin resistance?

We do a simple blood test (2-3 drops from your finger – the more hydrated you are the easier the test is!!!) which gives us the results in about 3-4 minutes.  Easy!

Are there supplements I can take to reverse insulin resistance?

Yes there are:  My favourite supplements are

  • Insulex; 6 daily which is for insulin resistance combined with lots of pain
  • Resist X; 4 daily which is for insulin resistance, sugar cravings and low energy (also helps girls gain a ‘waist’ over a period of time; contains ingredients such as korean ginseng, cinnamon and chromium
  • combination of these 2 if it’s really dangerous!
  • Krill oil works through increasing HDL cholesterol (good HDL levels are crucial for good hormone production and decreasing our risk of stroke, heart disease and diabetes) – there are many qualities of krill oil – be careful with supermarket brands
  • Shake It Extra – high protein meal replacement with the ingredients of insulex in the formula.

What foods should I avoid until my insulin resistance is within the ‘safe’ range?

Anything that turns into sugar is very inflammatory and exhausting for your body to cope with when we have insulin resistance:

  • All grains and flours:  wheat, rye, spelt, rice, oats, barley
  • All fruits
  • All starchy vegetables:  potatoes, pumpkin, carrots…
  • breads, cakes, cereals (obviously – they contain the ingredients above)
  • sugar (yes, I commonly get ask if it’s bad)
  • alcohol – turns straight into sugar – and our body burns it down first, before anything else!

What are our Chakras and how do they affect us??

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011
Ever heard about chakras, wonder what they are, whether or not they’re real…  AND what can we do to support and heal them??  I thought I’d share this article since it was so well written… and I’ve added my own comments at the bottom to let you know how New Leaf Natural Therapies can help your Chakra Health!
The big question is…

Is your energetic ecosystem working the way it should?

And more importantly, do you know how to influence it? Imagine having the ability, at any given moment, to instantly uplift any aspect of your life by tapping into one of your 7 Chakras, and empowering it.

Need to perform better at work and get that raise or promotion? Strengthen your 1st Chakra. Want to eliminate misunderstandings and connect better with your spouse, kids, friends and co-workers? Work on your 4th Chakra. Want to spice up your sex life and enjoy mind-blowing orgasms? Unblock your 2nd Chakra. Need to lose that excess flab and look good in your clothes? Again, work on your 1st Chakra.

This is the foundation of the ancient science known as Chakra Healing–an effective, spiritual and completely natural way to break free from the shackles of personal limitations, and start living on your own terms.

Great Minds on Chakras:dalai-lama

The Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama acknowledges the importance of Chakras

In his critically acclaimed meditation book Mind in Comfort and Ease, His Holiness the Dalai Lama discusses the locations of the Chakras, and the life-influencing energies that flow through them. He is one of the many spiritual and scientific leaders who frequently discuss the crucial role Chakras play in our lives.

But what exactly are these 7 Chakras?

Chakras are 7 circular vortexes of energy (or sometimes pictured as flowers with petals) starting from your tail bone, and ending at the crown of your head. They are the focal points of your life force, or prana–and their individual states are vital to your holistic well-being.

Consider this–if we are all energetic beings of limitless potential, why do we face challenges in so many aspects of our lives? Why do our relationships, finances, career and sex life sometimes go awry?

The answer may be that the Chakra controlling this part of your life is dysfunctional–which means it’s your job to strengthen it.

Today, more and more people are realizing that the ancient science of Chakra Healing holds the key to virtually everything you’ve ever wanted in life. Have you ever wondered how some people can…

  • Almost effortlessly become top performers at work, have all the money they need for necessities and luxuries alike, and look fabulous doing it? That’s because their 1st Chakra, which controls their career and finances, is strong.
  • Indulge in mind-blowing passionate sex multiple times a week, even if they’re extremely busy and have been married for years? Their 2nd Chakra which controls their sexuality, is most likely glowing.
  • Consistently project an image of unwavering confidence, even in the toughest of situations, and play an active role in their families and communities? That’s all thanks to the radiance of their 3rd Chakra, which controls their personal power.
  • Enjoy deep, loving and understanding relationships with their teenage children, spouses, friends co-workers, and solve any dispute amicably? Their 4th Chakra, which controls their relationships, is no doubt healthy.
  • Always speak their minds, wear their hearts on their sleeves, and be respected for their authenticity? That’s a shining 5th Chakra, which controls their true voice, at work.
  • Rely on their “gut feelings” to intuitively solve problems at home and make important decisions at work–and be right about it most of the time? They’ve got an efficient 6th Chakra, which controls their intuition, to thank for that.
  • Experience an unwavering connection to God and their higher selves, and savor the security of knowing they’re being watched over at all times? Their 7th Chakra, which controls their divine consciousness, is surely empowered.

HCG – successful weight loss challenges….

    Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

It’s really interesting now that our clinic has been using HCG for months…  So far it has been 100% successful.  The minimum weight loss we’ve seen in 23 days (including the binge days) is 5.5kg.  The maximum we’ve seen in 23 days is 8.3kg.  Not bad, huh?  These are people who have struggled, self-sabotages, become annoyed and frustrated with regular weight loss programmes (including Shake It and Keto – which we have found successful…)

Shake It and Keto Programmes lose up to 2kg per week – but that’s with about 5-10% of clients.  The average client loses 500g per week on Shake It with the occasional burst of weight loss that’s higher…

We have people who joke that they have ‘no metabolism’ who lose the weight, people whos thyroid is cactus, are incredibly toxic, are used to doing 8-10 hours + of exercise per week…  you can imagine.

So, if you’re after a cool new way to keep your weight under control, perhaps doing the programme every couple of years if the weight creeps on slowly, it works!

I was talking to my clinical assistant, Gabby today, because my hubby and I (had a great weekend) and put on 3.5 kilos.  Given that this is what we do: binge then exericise and exercise and exercise and exercise and eventually maybe get the weight down, it has surprised us…again… that we have lost 2 kilos in 2 days by doing the steak days…

Gabby said, ‘Well, believe it! The HCG works!’.  Weird, but I’m still proving it to myself and I haven’t founda flaw in the programme yet, if people do the work, and stick to it!  Dr Simeons was a genius, ahead of his time!
