Signs of Chronic Infection: A symptom speaks a thousand words!

Friday, June 28th, 2013

There are so many symptoms that indicate chronic infections that we look at – things that doctors don’t pay attention to, symptoms that aren’t considered important and get ignored.

Obviously when we do a case-history for a new client we get lots and lots of information about the medical and emotional history.  It’s amazing what naturopaths find vitally important for helping people move forward with their health.  Some of the strongest indicators of chronic infection are its manifestations within the body – our symptoms – the powerful stimulus of chronic infection typically results in a combination of inflammation, immune suppression and mitochondrial dysfunction, along with many symptoms that make us feel unwell.

Common symptoms and signs of chronic infection

  • Inflammation:  Pain, inflammatory diseases, High hsCRP/CRP/ESR levels; high WBC white blood cell count
  • Mitochondrial Dysfunction:  Fatigue, Cognitive dysfunction, muscle pain, muscle weakness
  • Immune Suppression:  Poor immunity, recurrent infection, unexplained fevers
  • Gut-based Infections:  bloating, abdominal pain, irregular bowel movements, positive urinary indicans testing

So, we look at things a little different to the medical profession – we look at the whole body, the whole history, all of the symptoms and when they started!

Indentifying Chronic Infections when 80% can’t be found medically!!

Friday, June 28th, 2013

If you have a chronic infection it can be really challenging trying to find it medically:  infections often (80% of the time) live in biofilms and therefore are not present in samples such as sputum, urine and blood, and may not be easy to culture using conventional techniques.

This means that many people with hidden chronic infections come to us reporting that no infections can be found medically, but every sign in their body is showing infections – we see signs with our live blood screenings, our urine tests, client symptomatology and kinesiology.

Serological tests for antibodies can be one way of identifying these hidden infections – for example, antibodies to common chronic viral infections such as Ross River Fever and Cytomegalovirus are frequently tested.  However, due to long-term immunological memory, a positive test result cannot distinguish between an infection which occurred 20 years ago, and one which is still active.  The level of antibodies are suggested to give some indication, with high levels suggestive of more active infection, and low levels suggestive of either resolved infection or a weakened immune response.

With live blood screenings, we can see how the body is coping with infections – are the white blood cells active and healthy, are they the correct size, are the premature or way too old…  We can see if the body is fighting something, not coping, and needs support without finding the exact ‘bug’, ‘disease’ or ‘infection’.

With kinesiology we can prime the body to fight bacteria, viruses and parasites more efficiently, we can prime the immune system to work under the stress of poor diet and mineral deficiencies, we can prime the immune system to withstand the effects of vaccination.

We love treating chronic health conditions – possibly because we consistently get such great results.

Understanding Chronic Infections

Friday, June 28th, 2013

Medical research is currently in the process of reframing the way we view infections, with the knowledge that most organisms in nature, including those in and on our bodies, for complex colonies known as biofilms.

These are communities of microbes that work collaboratively and live adhered to a surface, be it a rock at the bottom of a creek, the mucosa of our gut, or the surface of a tooth.

As a biofilm colony grows, it secretes and surrounds itself with an extracellular matrix substance to provide protection and stability.  This protective matrix gives the microbes within that community resistance to immune attack and antibiotics.  Additionally, when the biofilm community is attacked, it retains the ability to regrow from a few ‘persistor’ cells (a special form of the bacteria likened to a dormant seed), ready to regrow when the environment becomes favourable.  Alarmingly, 80% of infections are comprised of bacteria living in the biofilm phenotype, which makes them hidden, resistant and persistent.

It is important to note, however, that not all biofilms are detrimental.  The biofilm is the natural state for bacteria in the body, which means the normal commensal flora of the skin and mucous membranes also exist in a biofilm.  Our therapeutic approach, therefore, must not be focussed on eradicating all biofilms, but rather on ensuring the right balance of flora exists for optimal health.

  • We find that chronic biofilm imbalances, however, are found in:
    chronic fatigue syndrome
  • fibromyalgia
  • autism, ASD, aspergers, ADHD, ODD, behavioural problems
  • sinus and hayfever
  • asthma and respiratory problems such as URTI, chronic allergies
  • chronic bronchitis

On average, in current studies in the U.S., there are around 5-8 hidden infections lying latent in the body with ANY chronic health issue, including so many of our cancers, autism, mood and behavioural problems.  Both interesting and scary!

Let’s find it, treat it, and get you better!

Natural Support for Cancer

Friday, June 28th, 2013
How can New Leaf do for cancer??

People end up in a state of shock with any diagnosis… but I’m healthy. I exercise. I look after myself…

However, the standard things we consider with our cancer clients are (all cancer has the same causes – our genetics have been hugely disturbed – and has effects deep inside the body)

1. BMI – keeping it under 25 – Obviously many people gain weight as they get older – and the BMI over 25 starts putting us in an inflammatory state … cancer is inflammatory. Once our BMI is over 30, it’s releasing inflammatory hormones 100% of the time.  The VLA bioimpedance analysis also gives inflammatory signs – how inflamed the cells are, how much nutrition is stored in the body – or not. These are all cancer risks and can be improved. HCG is fantastic as shifting weight that’s built up over a lifetime.

2. Acidity levels – urine acidity and saliva acid…should be 7ish… the lower it is (closer to 5) puts us in a higher risk for cancer, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis. Cancer doesn’t just magically appear in our bodies. It takes at least (usually) 4 years to develop – requires lots of genetic changes, acidity, less than adequate nutrition to appear. Acidity is caused by many things (this is why we do lots of testing):

  • Parasites, bacterial and fungal infections:  the human microbiome being out of balance
  • Nutritional deficiencies:  we can’t create cancer without deficiencies – it is simply impossible
  • Food allergies and intolerances:  food plays such a huge role – if we constantly have allergies we’re activating TH2 cells in the immune system, this switches down our ability to fight cancer cells which require TH1 activity.
  • Stress, survival patterns, trauma
  • Weight gain

3. Iron, B12, folate – optimal levels. When we do live blood screenings these parameters are crucial. The size of the red blood cells is so important because lots of nutrients travel around the body in the red blood cells – if too small (classic iron deficiency) if too large (classic B12 deficiency). B12 and folate are now known to repair DNA/genetic disturbances (in big enough doses). These nutrients also support methylation in the liver – when this pathway doesn’t work we have a higher risk of heart disease. DNA changes can be reversed with big enough doses of MetagenB12/folate, Stem Enhance and anti-inflammatory substances such as MetaPure EPA/DHA. Anaesthetics bind with B12 and make it unavailable. We then need huge doses (2000-4000mcg daily) in order to 1. Pull out anaesthetics and 2. Start the DNA repair process. Less than that simply doesn’t cut it.

4. Heavy Metal Toxicity. Heavy metals are positively charged. They create inflammation in the body. Cancer is negatively charged. When there is cancer in the body we always find heavy metal toxicity. This is crucial. There is always toxicity where there is cancer. Radiation and chemo and anaesthetics all add to the toxic load, creating an environment where cancer can return.

5. Thyroid levels. Nearly everyone comes is ‘yep my thyroid is fine’. However, TSH within normal range isn’t perfect, it just isn’t the point where we need medication yet. TSH over 1.84 is dangerous for the entire body. It means that the thyroid is pumping out hormones way more than it should, and that just about any organ in the body can be struggling because of it. If our body is struggling through the thyroid – it also slows down liver function (detox) gut function (absorption) DNA repair and maintenance (allowing genetic changes which allow cancer)

So that’s just a few thoughts about different things that we can work with long term to create a healthier body where you’re less likely to get another cancer. Chemo, operations and radiation are obviously toxic… but if you know how your body has coped (bioimpedance analysis, live blood screenings, kinesiology for heavy metals/allergies/emotional support than you have a much much better chance long-term….

So, these are a few of the things we do for cancer.  We work systematically through a detox process, using testing processes to guide us as to what needs work first, and we slowly but surely work on the ‘health’ of your body instead of focussing on the disease.  By working on the ‘health’ of the body, it’s creating an environment where cancer finds it harder to survive.

Human Microbiome: how much of us is actually human?

Friday, June 28th, 2013

We live with bugs – let’s look after them!!

Recent genetic screening studies have astounded us by identifying that only around 10% of the cells in the body are actually human.  The rest of these cells make up the human microbiome; that is, the sum of bacteria, fungi and parasites living on us and inside us.

Some of the well-known sites of colonisation are the skin, lung, mouth, and of course, the gastrointestinal tract.  However, microbes have also been found in new places, including within the endothelium of our arteries, contained in atherosclerotic plaques; within the joint fluid of rheumatoid arthritis patients; and within the neurons of those with Alzheimer’s Disease.

It must be emphasised, however, that a microbial presence in the body is both unavoidable and essential.  We have co-evolved with microbes and are dependent upon their presence to regulate our immune system, protect our skin and mucosa, digest our food and produce nutrients and assist in the metabolism of toxins.  Sterilising the body is by no means the aim in treating infection.

Our aim at New Leaf is to create balance.  With a unique combination of Naturopathy & Chi Nei Tsang Abdominal Massage; Kinesiology to find out if the infections/microbiome is out of balance/ infrared saunas and frequency specific microcurrent we get great results.  It takes time and energy to rebalance the organisms in our body.

More and more reasons to avoid Genetically Modified Foods

Monday, June 24th, 2013

Genetically modified foods are in a large amount of our foods – and most of us won’t know it. How could we? When GM foods are highly refined and are ingredients in packaged foods, Australian law doesn’t require any labelling indicating their presence! Any ingredients such as soy, corn, vegetable oil, and canola oil are highly likely to be genetically modified. Basically, if it doesn’t say it’s not, it IS.

GM foods are not only a danger to our health, they have the potential to destroy the environment – their effects are already causing wide-scale damage, particularly for birds, bees, and waterways. In fact, the Russian and European governments have moved to ban GM seeds and associated pesticides due to their destructive ecological effects. A single grain of corn covered in a GM-produced pesticide used the US, neonicotinoid, is enough to kill a bird.  Of particular concern are the declining bee populations globally. Over 90% of wild bees have been wiped out in the US, and the main culprit is genetically modified seeds and the pesticides used on them. Bees play a huge role in the food we eat – pollination is essential for healthy crops and healthy produce. Without bees, we won’t be able to grow enough crops to feed the world.  According to Dr Ken Walker, senior entomologist at Museum Victoria;

“You think of all the fruit and vegetables that we eat – without pollination that wouldn’t occur. You think of all the fruit and vegies we eat – sometimes you might get a tomato or a piece of fruit that isn’t as luscious or isn’t as large, and that is because it hasn’t been well pollinated. And so the tree says, well if it’s not well pollinated I’m not going to put as much energy into making a good piece of fruit. So pollination is an enormous thing for us.”

So, it’s crucial that we avoid GM foods and protest their production by refusing to buy products with GM ingredients. To find out which foods in Australia contain genetically modified ingredients, visit
