What are Lectins?

What are Lectins?

Do you suffer from symptoms after eating? Such as digestive symptoms, foggy brain, sinus congestion or aches and pains. Do you notice it after gluten containing foods or just can’t track what’s causing it? Chances are you’re body is reacting to components in plants called lectins.

What are lectins? So happy you asked!

Lectins are the plants natural compounds to ward off pests, fungal and bacterial attack. That is, the plants natural immune system. When plants are under attack they raise their lectin numbers to fend off the attacking pests. This is the system by which pesticides work. However, pests are gaining tolerance resulting in needing an increase of pesticide to be applied to the plant and thus a further increase of the plants lectins.

Modern wheat strains vs old style grains

Our modern wheat strains have been modified to produce more lectins to be highly pest resistant. This very clever genetically engineering won Norman Borlaug a Nobel peace prize in 1970 and changed the industry inexplicably. However, years later we are discovering the health consequences of our daily foods containing such an immense amount of lectins.

Let me explain:

The modern wheat (Triticum aestivum) is a genetically engineered species containing three distinct sets of chromosomes. These chromosomes can produce over 23,000 unique proteins. Thus this modern species contains high protein and gluten levels plus wheat germ agglutinin (WGA). WGA is a lectin which provides wheat with its resistance to insect pests, yeasts and bacteria.  Interestingly WGA binds to N-acetyl D glucosamine in the chitin of the insects, disrupting their cell structures and killing them.

Why are lectins so bad?

It is this WGA (lectins)  which can also directly damage tissues of the human body wherever N-acetyl glucosamine is present, even if the individual doesn’t have any genetic predispositions or susceptibilities to immune mediated mechanisms. For example, the auto-immune conditions or inflammatory reactions. However, the presence of lectins can and do exacerbate inflammation for auto-immune conditions such as Coeliac’s Disease, making symptoms worse. This can explain why chronic inflammatory and degenerative conditions are gaining prevalence in wheat-consuming populations.  It destroys the villi in your intestines, leading to malabsorption, nutrient deficiencies and infections!

Tissues within the human body that contain N-acetyl D glucosamine are:

  • All mucosal membranes throughout the digestive system, respiratory system, etc.
  • Connective tissues in joints
  • Brain cells and organs
  • Skin
  • Arterial bifurcations, including around the heart.

It is proposed that it is the increased lectin content that are causing major health problems for people rather than gluten. For example, many Australians experience health problems after eating products made from Australian grown wheat. Where as if they travel to other countries and consume wheat based products from there they do not, i.e. France or Italy. Such countries grew different strains of wheat which were largely unmodified like our Australian grains. Hence, the end product (croissants, baguettes, pasta, pizza bases) had less lectin resulting in fewer reactions after eating. Of course this has now changed as the high yield strains are now more global.

Is it just grains which we get lectins from?

Furthermore, when livestock are fed grains high in WGA lectins this then passes through their system to the products we consume. For example, dairy milk. Therefore, if you’re experiencing symptoms after consuming dairy it may not be lactose or actual dairy protein but the lectins passed through the dairy cow to their milk. Likewise with meats, hence the advantage of consuming grass fed meats only.

There have been some notable improvements when individuals have ceased dairy and gluten products, possibly due to the decrease of consumed lectins. Some of these conditions include:

  • (Gut mucosa) – Irritable bowel syndrome:  bloating, burping, wind, flatulence, diarrhoea, constipation
  • (Joints) – arthritis, fibromyalgia
  • (Hippocampal cells) – mental and behavioural conditions
  • (Lung mucosa) – asthma
  • (Beta pancreatic cells) – diabetes
  • (Coronary artery cells) – Cardiovascular disease
  • (Skin) – psoriasis and eczema
  • Autism & Aspergers, non-verbal children and adults

How can lectin intake be reduced in diet?

As it is impossible to maintain a healthy diet and avoid lectins if you are experiencing symptoms pertaining to lectins the key is reduce intake and increase tolerance.

Firstly, even organic and spray free fresh fruit and vegetables contain lectins, but if they’re not engineered they should contain less. Grass-fed meats and dairy is the best way forward for proteins to reduce lectin intake.

How can tolerance to lectins be improved?

There is no definitive answer to improving the individual’s lectin tolerance, however there is some key things you can do. Have good healthy nutrient intake particularly zinc. The herb ginger is particularly high in zinc and is very good at reducing inflammation and calming and supporting function all along the digestive track. Having said that, if there is any history of stomach ulcers please consult your local herbalist or naturopath for advice.

And then there’s Kinesiology 🙂

How can Kinesiology help improve tolerance to lectins?

Kinesiology is a way to ask your body what is stressing it by what we call indicator muscles. It is largely based on Traditional Chinese Medicine meridian system and acupuncture points which are like reference points. Via assessing where the stress is the body can also indicate how to relieve the stress, thus reducing the symptoms one is experiencing. Therefore kinesiology balancing is a remarkable way to reduce symptoms.

What about Acupuncture and Chi Nei Tsang Abdominal Massage?

Also great ways to increase the energy to the gut, reduce stress and increase energy.  Chi Nei Tsang Abdominal Massage is nearly an hour on your gut – it helps to break down the scar tissue that has built up around the abdomen due to years of food-abuse that’s destroyed the villi –  let the healing begin!!!

Allergies, Cold, Flu, Spring Fever!

Tuesday, September 15th, 2015

Allergy Support at New Leaf Natural TherapiesAre you or your family suffering:

  • increased allergies, eczema
  • increased asthma, wheezing
  • cold and flu
  • The awful Brisbane flu strain!

Time to get it sorted!

Spring has it’s own challenges.  Pollens in the air, dust, changes in weather, changes of diet and the ever-changes bug-epidemic!  By the time we start sneezing and wheezing there are some changes happening in our immune system:

  • Increased T Helper 2 immune cells – these are the ones that cause allergic tendencies.  To quench these T Helper 2 cells we use products such as Allergeze, Zinc ACE, and Eyebright Complex.  There are also homeopathics and herbal tonics which help to settle down your T Helper 2 cells.
  • Decreased T Helper 1 immune cells – these are the cells that when boosted fight viruses, bacteria, fungus, cancer cells and candida.  T Helper Immune Cells are boosted by Zinc ACE, Many herbs such as andrographis, Echinacea and Manuka.
  • Your T Helper 3 immune cells are fast asleep!  Well, not really, but they do balance the T Helper cells, so if we are suffering spring fever, they’re probably not functioning properly!  Prebiotics such as Ultra Flora Digest and Probiotics such as Ultra Flora Immune, Ultra Biotic 45 and Kids Flora Care are some of the products we use – but everyone is different and may require something more specific!
  • There are specific supplements for cold, flu… depending on your symptoms.
  • You need a combination of these long-term to get your immune system issues under control.

Why do these immune system cells get out of balance?

  • anti-biotics – they are clever at fighting specific infections but leave the immune system weakened!  You need to find out what probiotics you need to reinoculate and make your gut and immune system healthy again
  • studies show that people with chronic asthma and allergies tummies contain few, if any, of the healthy gut bacteria that keep us safe from allergies, colds and flu.  This is the naturopath domain, not the doctors.
  • Stress.  stress, pain, anxiety – increase cortisol and that kills some of our good bacteria in the gut.  Not a bad idea to take probiotics when we’re stress.  There’s a massive gut-brain connection as you would have heard about…  Hugely important.
  • Diet.  A diet high in refined sugars, carbohydrates, flour, processed foods – contains no pre-biotics and destroys good gut flora.  Talk to us about healthy eating with an open mind if you want to live a long and healthy life.
  • Weight.  Yes, weight.  Having a BMI over 30 (20% more than optimal) means you’re releasing at least 32 inflammatory hormones 100% of the time – it shuts down the immune system, increases stress hormones, activates fight and flight, and causes leaky gut.  Start improving your weight/fat/muscle ratio – we can help!

Biofilm, Infections & Chronic health problems

Tuesday, July 28th, 2015

Ew!!  Let’s talk yucky mucus!   This is a fungal ball – the result of anti-bitoics which allow fungus to grow, and then the body releases mucus to sop up the fungus.  Yuck!

Research is showing that biofilm (a mucus substance that is released to ‘sop up’ bacterial, fungal and viral particles) in the average person – with a normal history of vaccines and anti-biotic use, is holding up to 20 chronic infections in our bodies.  Why?

  • Anti-biotic use:  one dose of anti-biotics can destroy our gut lining, and our bacterial, viral and fungal combination in our gut for up to 7 years IF we haven’t done anything to repair the dose.  Because anti-biotics upset our gut lining, our body makes biofilm to help to soothe it, often containing the bug-particles that we’ve been killing off.  Anti-biotics are anti-bacterial – but they may allow candida, fungus, viruses or cancer cells to get out of hand…
  • Pain killers – yep!  Any medical pain killers are anti-inflammatory by nature (makes sense!) but did you know that the process of killing bad bacteria or viruses or fungus or candida or cancer cells is indeed inflammatory?  In other words, the more pain killers we take, the more chronic infections we can have lurking in our systems.  If you take pain-killers you must be on probiotics to balance your body

  • Vaccines – the ‘adjuvants’ in vaccines – the mercury and aluminium – are highly toxic to the gut lining and to our immune cells.  These heavy metals not only make our bodies need to make more biofilm, but they destroy good gut bacteria and good gut viruses and can turn them into nasty disease forming bugs.
  • We have 24,000 genes which will last our lifetime.  We have between 1000-2500 different types of bacteria, viruses, candida, fungal ‘bugs’ living in our bodies all the time (making up trillions of cells – this is our microbiome) – Bugs have a short shelf life – and as THEY replicate, THEY are learning how to live in OUR bodies.  If we’re stressed – they’re learning to live in a stressful environment.  If we’re toxic – they’re learning how to live in a toxic environment.

Where does the biofilm live in our bodies?

  • in our lungs (asthma), throat, sinuses (allergies), brain (it’s linked with dementia, autism, aspergers), heart (it’s linked with heart disease), abdominal cavity (linked to menstrual issues, gut issues and fertility issues), intestines (constipation, IBS, Crohns, diarrhoea), skin (acne, psoriasis, chronic skin issues)

What can we do about biofilm?

  • Kinesiology and Microcurrent helps your body to activate biofilm so that the immune system can recognise it and start dealing with it.
  • There are herbs, supplements and essential oils which help to break down biofilm and release old infections (so that we can deal with them) – favourite supplements at New Leaf are Bactrex, Parex, NasoClear, Herbal Throat Spray and N-acetyl cysteine.
  • Boost the immune system, tone the organs that have been damaged (lungs, gut, brain, throat, intestines), deal with the infections as they are released from deep inside and improve the way the body copes with stress.
  • Chi Nei Tsang and Reflexology can support the body in breaking down biofilm and boosting the immunity.

We can help.  Biofilm is linked to all chronic disease – not to mention kids health.

What is the Role of Th1 and Th2 cells in Autoimmune Disease?

What is the Role of Th1 and Th2 in Autoimmune Disease?

This article was originally written as a guest post for The Paleo Mom

FROM NEW LEAF:  This is a fantastically written article about T Helper 1 & 2 cells and how Auto-Immune is linked, which disorders are considered T Helper 1 or 2 dominant.  All of which we treat at New Leaf Natural Therapies.

Those that suffer from autoimmune disease commonly experience symptoms that stem from imbalances within the functioning of their immune system. There are many factors that can influence this balance – stress, nutrition, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, gut flora, and allergies, among others. This way of looking at autoimmune disease is a growing trend in the alternative field, highlighted through the work of Datis Kharrazian.

What are Th1 and Th2?

T-helper cells (abbreviated as Th) are a vital part of the immune system. They are lymphocytes (types of white blood cells) that recognize foreign pathogens, or in the case of autoimmune disease, normal tissue. In response to this recognition, they produce cytokines, which are hormonal messenger proteins that are responsible for the biological effects of the immune system. They are divided into subgroups as follows:

Th1: Th1 cells are involved in what is called “cell-mediated” immunity, which usually deals with infections by viruses and certain bacteria. They are the body’s first line of defense against pathogens that get inside our cells. They tend to be pro-inflammatory and are involved in the development of organ-specific autoimmune disease.

Th2: Th2 cells are involved in what is called “humoral-mediated” immunity, which deals with bacteria, toxins, and allergens. They are responsible for stimulating the production of antibodies in response to extracellular pathogens (those found in blood or other body fluids). They tend not to be inflammatory and are involved in systemic autoimmune disease and other chronic conditions.

In a well-functioning immune system, both groups of these T helper cells work together to keep the system balanced. One side might become more active to eradicate a threat, then settling back to a balanced level.

How does this affect autoimmune disease?

In some people with autoimmune disease, patterns showing a dominance to either the Th1 or Th2 pathway have been shown. Although there are exceptions, the following table shows the conditions that are most commonly associated with a Th1 or Th2 dominant state:

TH1 dominant conditions:

Type I diabetes Multiple sclerosis Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis Grave’s Disease Crohn’s Disease Psoriasis Sjoren’s Syndrome Celiac Disease Lichen Planus Rheumatoid Arthritis Chronic viral infections

TH2 dominant conditions:

Lupus Allergic Dermatitis Scleroderma Atopic Eczema Sinusitis Inflammatory Bowel Disease Asthma Allergies Cancer Ulcerative Colitis Multiple chemical sensitivity

When the th1 cells of the immune system are overactive, they can suppress the activity of th2 and vice versa. This can be problematic because these two components of the immune system function in a delicately balanced relationship. In the case of autoimmune disease, imbalance can further the attack on healthy tissue, thereby worsening symptoms.

Although research can lump those with certain conditions under the Th1/2 categories, in reality they can be all over the map. For instance, although most Hashimoto’s patients present a Th1 dominance, some can be Th2. It is also possible to have both Th1 and Th2 simultaneously overactive or under-active. Pregnancy can shift the immune system temporarily to Th2, which is why a lot of women find out they have Hashimoto’s after they give birth and their immune system returns to Th1 dominance.

How do I find out if I am Th1 or Th2 dominant?

AT New Leaf we provide Live Blood Screenings from which we do a white blood cell count – the count of neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes, along with eosinophils, let us know a huge amount about your immune system.

There are effective treatments, supplements, processes we use that can help to start the process of regulating your immune system.

Ask about:

  • kinesiology for the immune system (NOT)
  • kinesiology for finding out if your body is recognising foods, supplements, viruses, bacteria
  • live blood screenings
  • remedial massage and microcurrent for pain

Understanding Chronic Infections

Friday, June 28th, 2013

Medical research is currently in the process of reframing the way we view infections, with the knowledge that most organisms in nature, including those in and on our bodies, for complex colonies known as biofilms.

These are communities of microbes that work collaboratively and live adhered to a surface, be it a rock at the bottom of a creek, the mucosa of our gut, or the surface of a tooth.

As a biofilm colony grows, it secretes and surrounds itself with an extracellular matrix substance to provide protection and stability.  This protective matrix gives the microbes within that community resistance to immune attack and antibiotics.  Additionally, when the biofilm community is attacked, it retains the ability to regrow from a few ‘persistor’ cells (a special form of the bacteria likened to a dormant seed), ready to regrow when the environment becomes favourable.  Alarmingly, 80% of infections are comprised of bacteria living in the biofilm phenotype, which makes them hidden, resistant and persistent.

It is important to note, however, that not all biofilms are detrimental.  The biofilm is the natural state for bacteria in the body, which means the normal commensal flora of the skin and mucous membranes also exist in a biofilm.  Our therapeutic approach, therefore, must not be focussed on eradicating all biofilms, but rather on ensuring the right balance of flora exists for optimal health.

  • We find that chronic biofilm imbalances, however, are found in:
    chronic fatigue syndrome
  • fibromyalgia
  • autism, ASD, aspergers, ADHD, ODD, behavioural problems
  • sinus and hayfever
  • asthma and respiratory problems such as URTI, chronic allergies
  • chronic bronchitis

On average, in current studies in the U.S., there are around 5-8 hidden infections lying latent in the body with ANY chronic health issue, including so many of our cancers, autism, mood and behavioural problems.  Both interesting and scary!

Let’s find it, treat it, and get you better!

LEAP Programme: Learning Enhancement Acupressure Programme as taught by Dr Charles Krebs

Wednesday, June 5th, 2013

Did you know??

Our LEAP Programme is for children (of any age haha) and adults who need their brains to function a little better.

For kids who get their letters mixed up, have comprehension issues (read but can’t make sense); where maths is difficult, where balance is off.  But, it’s never a quick fix.  The brain is complicated, and unfortunately in our modern world it’s taking longer to correct the brain than 10 years ago…  LEAP is a process, usually 10-20 sessions for a fairly ‘normal’ kid with learning problems/behavioural problems (usually brain disintegration causes behaviour), more if the child is severely stressed, toxic, allergic…

There are many reasons for brain disintegration – birthing stresses, birthing medications, vaccine toxins, lack of oxygen (in a specific neuronal pathway), mother stress, breastfeeding issues, birth of siblings, moving house, moving schools, allergies, candida, fungal infections, addictions, medications, teacher voices, teacher stresses, virus and viral particles and so much more!

Changes happen slowly but consistently on the programme as neurological pathways are working better and better.  Multi-sensory pathways support improvement with vision, hearing, sight, smell (such as anosmia), touch imbalances.  Primitive reflexes that are jammed that create excess fear, threats and dangers in life are slowly released.

Our initial LEAP Assessment with Norm is only $106.50 for 1.5 hours.  Find out if LEAP can help you and your family…

Far Infrared Sauna – amazing health benefits!

Monday, March 18th, 2013

Perspiration is recognised by health practitioners worldwide as perhaps the most effective method of removing both difficult chemical and heavy metal toxins from the body. The combination of “resonant absorption” and low heat makes this the detox method of choice for chronically ill patients as well as those that are well and wish to stay that way by reducing their “toxic burden”.

As your body increases sweat production to cool itself, your heart works harder to boost circulation, thus improving your cardiovascular system. Your immune system is also strengthened because when your body temperature is raised, your systems fight this “artificial fever”. Sweating helps detoxify your body, by removing the accumulation of potentially carcinogenic heavy metals as well as alcohol, nicotine, sodium and excess cholesterol. Profuse perspiration also deeply cleanses the skin, improving tone and helping to treat skin conditions.

Hippocrates, the founder of modern medicine wrote more than two thousand years ago “Give me the power to create a fever, and I shall cure any disease.” During a fever the functioning of the immune system is stimulated, whilst the growth of bacteria and virus is forced to slow down. Fever is the body’s natural defense against bacteria, viruses and microbes. Heat triggers the production of infection-fighting  white blood cells. The result is immune system improvement. The generation of antibodies speeds up, as does the production of interferon, an anti viral protein that also has powerful healing properties.

Far Infra-red sauna is one of the most effective forms of heat treatment it’s technology allows the radiant heat to penetrate the body rather than heating the air in the sauna. It is also better tolerated by those who have trouble with the intense heat of traditional saunas as well as producing  maximum health benefit with lower ambient heat. As the pores in the skin open up millions of sweat glands start to excrete, the body rids itself of metabolic and other waste products. Sweat contains almost the same elements as urine and for this reason, the skin is sometimes called the ‘third kidney’. It is estimated that as much as 30% of bodily wastes are eliminated by way of perspiration.

Far Infrared Sauna:

  • Is well tolerated by most healthy adults and older children.
  • Boosts immune function and is helpful for those who are limited in their ability to sweat through exercise due to lack of energy or physical limitations, such as injury of back pain
  • Is a viable and efficient means of eliminating toxins from the body, thus allviating any symptoms realted to increased toxic burden
  • Can help lower high blood pressure
  • Can be helpful for patients with asthma and chronic bronchitis.
  • It decreases pain and increases mobility in patients with rheumatic diseases.
  • Is beneficial for people with chronic fatigue and low immunity
  • Supports skin health and helps to treat skin conditions

Always remember to re-hydrate following heat therapies, drink extra amounts of water throughout the day.

The healing journey with New Leaf

Saturday, March 2nd, 2013

Embarking on a health journey is a brave move to make. It means looking at the issues you may have avoided for a while and facing them head on. It’s a process that is often scary yet can also be richly rewarding. When you are the best version of yourself you can be, you can really shine and be there for those close to you.

It can be said that it’s a means of coming back to your basic self  – seeing your body as a precious temple and paying attention to what you really need. It’s treating yourself gently and gaining a greater connection to the whole of you – body and mind. As one of my favourite authors Sarah Avant Stover puts it – the only way out is in and through. To go through our health issues rather than going around them is the only real way to back to balance and health.

At New Leaf, we are committed to your success in this process. We know it’s yours, to go through in your way. Offering a harmonious range of therapies, we seek to find the real cause of your health issues and guide you back to balance and health.

We see your journey to optimal health as a partnership between yourself and us. Thus, we have a few suggestions for you in order that you get the best results from your treatment with us:

  • Eat a fresh, wholefoods diet. When you eat fresh, vital food, you feel just that. Everything we eat nourishes our cells. If we consider that the body is really the only vessel we have to take us through this lifetime, it makes sense to nourish it with the best food possible.
  • Drink a minimum of 2 litres of pure filtered water daily. Besides hydration, there are countless benefits of drinking adequate pure water. Improved energy, detoxification, digestion, skin condition and weight loss are just a few.
  • Limit caffeine, or better still, cut it altogether. Caffeine creates extra work for your liver, and can place stress on the adrenal glands and nervous system. It also promotes dehydration and in the long term, fatigue. There are many delicious herbal teas and coffee alternatives available in supermarkets and health food stores.
  • Sleep 8 hours a night. While sleeping as little as possible in modern society is often considered admirable behaviour, the truth is, it promotes premature aging, weight gain, can increase stress and complicate many other health issues. It may require changing your usual routine a little, but getting 8 hours of quality sleep a night is an investment in your health.
  • Spend a few minutes a day alone, doing some quiet breath awareness in a comfortable seated position. All you need do is focus on your breath with your eyes closed. This can have wonderfully beneficial effects on your nervous system, improving mood, reducing stress and creating calm. A calm body heals well!
  • Increase body movement. This means different things to different people. Start with where you are at in terms of your current physical fitness, and do what feels right for you. Even if it just means adding incidental exercise by taking the stairs instead of the lift, walking to a colleague’s desk rather than emailing, or taking a short walk before or after work. Start where you are at the moment and build gently from there.

These are simple steps you can take today to improve your body’s ability to balance and heal. You can do one at a time, a few, or all of them, whatever feels right and good for you. It’s up to you.

We look forward to supporting you in achieving a state of greater health.
