Beat Colds and Flues as the season changes

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

With the change of season we’ve had a number of people coming into the clinic with respiratory infections, coughs, wheezing, and other respiratory-related complaints. Here we’d like to share our best tips for recovering from acute respiratory illness such as these.

Move inwards..

It’s subtle in Queensland, but the shift in the season brings about subtle shifts within our bodies. In Chinese medicine, the direction in cooler months is inwards, and so we may find we have less energy than summer, and we feel like doing a little less. Follow those urges. It’s time to gather things in, reflect , adjust and gain clarity. All our activities have an influence on our health, especially being out of harmony with nature.

What is your body telling you?

If you feel run down, listen to your body.  Symptoms can be seen as a form of intelligent communication from our bodies.  Go to bed a little earlier, and nurture yourself a little more. Cook a big batch of vegetable and chicken-broth soup, allow yourself to sleep in, and start to make a few less commitments on your calendar. Your body will thank you for it.

Breathe easy

Take a walk in the fresh air (with a scarf around your neck if you are chilly or sick), preferably in a park, in nature or by the sea. Breathe deeply. Alternatively, take a few deep, conscious breaths when you wake in the morning. Using the timeless remedy eucalyptus oil in a burner or as a steam inhalation can help to open the airways and help you breathe easier. Our Specialist in the aromatherapy massage Raindrop Technique, Rachel, can also recommend some specific, potent oils for the lungs and immune system.

Herbs and nutrients for the lungs and immune system

Herbal medicines are a powerful aid to the immune system. There are many herbs specific for different conditions, which we would select based on your individual symptom picture. From lung tonics to herbal expectorants to overall immune system support, herbs are an extremely effective means of preventing and treating colds, flues and general low immune function. We also stock a highly concentrated zinc and C powder that provides the body with essential, highly absorbable nutrients for the immune system.

Balance and fortify your body with Kinesiology

Kinesiology can help in the processing of stress and emotional factors that have a very real impact on the strength of the immune system. Kinesiology also helps to identify how well our organs are functioning and raises their energetic vitality when they are sub-optimal. Very often being run down is a product of a deeper issue on an emotional level; kinesiology helps to not only bring about our awareness of this but heal it as well.

The healing journey with New Leaf

Saturday, March 2nd, 2013

Embarking on a health journey is a brave move to make. It means looking at the issues you may have avoided for a while and facing them head on. It’s a process that is often scary yet can also be richly rewarding. When you are the best version of yourself you can be, you can really shine and be there for those close to you.

It can be said that it’s a means of coming back to your basic self  – seeing your body as a precious temple and paying attention to what you really need. It’s treating yourself gently and gaining a greater connection to the whole of you – body and mind. As one of my favourite authors Sarah Avant Stover puts it – the only way out is in and through. To go through our health issues rather than going around them is the only real way to back to balance and health.

At New Leaf, we are committed to your success in this process. We know it’s yours, to go through in your way. Offering a harmonious range of therapies, we seek to find the real cause of your health issues and guide you back to balance and health.

We see your journey to optimal health as a partnership between yourself and us. Thus, we have a few suggestions for you in order that you get the best results from your treatment with us:

  • Eat a fresh, wholefoods diet. When you eat fresh, vital food, you feel just that. Everything we eat nourishes our cells. If we consider that the body is really the only vessel we have to take us through this lifetime, it makes sense to nourish it with the best food possible.
  • Drink a minimum of 2 litres of pure filtered water daily. Besides hydration, there are countless benefits of drinking adequate pure water. Improved energy, detoxification, digestion, skin condition and weight loss are just a few.
  • Limit caffeine, or better still, cut it altogether. Caffeine creates extra work for your liver, and can place stress on the adrenal glands and nervous system. It also promotes dehydration and in the long term, fatigue. There are many delicious herbal teas and coffee alternatives available in supermarkets and health food stores.
  • Sleep 8 hours a night. While sleeping as little as possible in modern society is often considered admirable behaviour, the truth is, it promotes premature aging, weight gain, can increase stress and complicate many other health issues. It may require changing your usual routine a little, but getting 8 hours of quality sleep a night is an investment in your health.
  • Spend a few minutes a day alone, doing some quiet breath awareness in a comfortable seated position. All you need do is focus on your breath with your eyes closed. This can have wonderfully beneficial effects on your nervous system, improving mood, reducing stress and creating calm. A calm body heals well!
  • Increase body movement. This means different things to different people. Start with where you are at in terms of your current physical fitness, and do what feels right for you. Even if it just means adding incidental exercise by taking the stairs instead of the lift, walking to a colleague’s desk rather than emailing, or taking a short walk before or after work. Start where you are at the moment and build gently from there.

These are simple steps you can take today to improve your body’s ability to balance and heal. You can do one at a time, a few, or all of them, whatever feels right and good for you. It’s up to you.

We look forward to supporting you in achieving a state of greater health.

Health Issues for Children: we can help!

Friday, May 25th, 2012

Children’s health is anything but simple these days. A mothers instinct often tells us one thing, but then we are told the opposite…

Following doctors and societies instructions – having anti-biotics, vaccinations, breast feeding whilst on anti-depressants or other medications, giving medications such as Ritalin and dex-amphetamines, using drugs such as steroids daily… All with our vague knowledge of the side-effects but being told everything’s going to be okay.

We have many years experience in working with children’s health problems successfully. Take a look around you, and it seems like every second family has a child with some major health problem going on…

  • Cancer of all types
  • Skin issues – eczema and dermatitis, rashes and hives, acne and scarring
  • Allergies – hay fever and sinus problems, tummy upsets, diarrhoea and constipation, ADHD
  • Autism and aspergers
  • Dyslexia and Learning problems, auditory integration issues, problems with maths and spelling
  • Behavioural issues, concentration problems, poor memory
  • Childhood anxiety and panic attacks
  • Asthma, bronchitis, poor immunity

Phew!! What a list! Honestly, we are happy to support any child’s health and vitality with any child with any condition. With our combination of experience and expertise we can put together a programme to suit your child and help health and happiness come as quickly as possible.

We use a combination of techniques that help us to help your child:

  • NOT Neural organisational technique: this is a process that helps reorganise the neurology of your child, head to toe.
  • LEAP Learning enhancement acupressure programme: this is a specific programme for the brain – which targets areas of the brain and helps them to function more easily…
  • Allergy Assessments: we use diagnostic tools which help to improve immunity and reduce inflammatory reactions to substances causing symptoms in the body such as hayfever and sinusitis, ADHD, eczema and dermatitis, tummy upsets and chronic exhaustion
  • Naturopathic supplements that help to boost the bodys nutritional status and heal faster

Chinese Cupping Techniques:  by Katherine Lynn & Nathan Leach

What can Chinese Cupping Techniques be used for…

Respiratory Diseases: For chronic bronchitis and asthma

Digestive Diseases: For dysentery, early morning diarrhea, and acute and chronic gastritis

Pain Syndromes

· Shoulder blade

· Loins

· Head

· Soft tissue injury: treating local pressure pain points and area of swelling

Gynecological Disorders

· Infertility and irregular menstruation

· Leukorrhea

· Uterine cramps

Common cold

Insomnia

Cupping is an ancient Chinese practice where the cup is suctioned, applied to the skin, and the pressure in the cup is reduced (by using change in heat or by suctioning out air), so that the skin and outer layers of the muscles are drawn up and into the cup. Sometimes the cup may be moved while the suction of skin is still active, causing pulling of the skin and muscle (gliding cupping).

This treatment has similarities to other massage techniques, such as the rapid skin pinching along the back. In that practice, the skin is pinched, sometimes at specific points (e.g., bladder meridian points), until a redness is generated. Cupping is applied by acupuncturists to certain acupuncture points, as well as to regions of the body that are affected by pain (where the pain is deeper than the tissues to be pulled).

When the cups are moved along the surface of the skin, the treatment is similar to sand scraping, a folk remedy of southeast Asia which is often carried out by scraping the skin with a coin or other object with the intention of breaking up stagnation. Movement of the cups is a gentler technique than sand scraping, as a lubricant allows the cup to slide. Still, a certain amount of bruising is expected both from fixed position cupping (especially at the site of the cup rim) and with movement of the cups (up to 2 weeks of bruising should be expected after cupping massage techniques).

Traditional cupping, with use of heated cups, also has some similarity to moxibustion therapy. Heating of the cups was the method used to obtain suction: the hot air in the cups has a low density and, as the cups cool with the opening sealed by the skin, the pressure within the cups declines, sucking the skin into it. In this case, the cups are hot and have a stimulating effect something like that of burning moxa wool.

Asthma: Natural Strategies to improve your breathing!!

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Natural strategies for asthma have improved hugely over the last five years.  Breathing is such a natural process that it’s hard to imagine the lungs conspiring to stop us…however, it now happens to many, many Australians each year!

2.2 million adults have asthma (1/10) and 1/6 children (the third highest rate of childhood asthma in the world!

Around 400 deaths per year are a result of asthma and around 60% of these are fully preventable – even moreso when the lungs and respiratory system are supported with natural therapies… it takes time, but it may save your life!

New Leaf Natural Therapies have strategies to help you improve your lungs and take control of your life!

  1. natural supplements strong enough to create an anti-inflammatory process within the lungs: thereby allowing us to reduce medication as appropriate
  2. supplements and frequency specific microcurrent help to repair the lungs and bronchial tissue which has been inflamed for so long
  3. reduce allergens and allergic tendencies: the number one reason for asthma attacks – we do treatments to improve allergic tendencies: these include supplements; kinesiology and frequency specific microcurrent.  In our live blood analysis testing we usually find massive levels of eosinophils (allergy markers in the bloodstream) in asthmatics.  We consistenly find these improve over time with this combination of treatments.
  4. repair the gut! We find that just about 100% of our clients with asthma have ‘leaky gut syndrome’ in our Live Blood Analysis.  The tissue in the gut (endothelial tissue) is identical to that of the lungs and inflammation tends to happen simultaneously in both areas with affected asthmatics.  So ‘leaky lung syndrome’ and ‘leaky gut syndrome go hand in hand!
  5. Many chronic coughs are a result of either subclinical asthmatic tendencies or allergies.  It is important to get to the bottom of it as these coughs can last for years!
  6. Asthmatics tend to have low oxygen levels due to inefficient lungs: increasing substances like co-enzyme Q10 and oxygen supplements help the body to re-oxygenate.
