Are Foods Making us sick, causing us pain?! Time to take a new look at research from around the world!
I’ve just returned from a anti-ageing & obesity congress on natural medicine, we had speakers from around the world, experts in their fields, researchers in inflammatory processes of foods (and the body), and basically we found that over 30 years, research has been done looking into prevention of many health issues: diabetes, cancer, heart disease and auto-immune diseases… with changing the foods we eat, or negating the inflammatory effects of foods.
There are links with really specific genes interacting with certain allergenic foods – these activate our genetic ability to create disease, unfortunately at this stage there is no medical test which finds these connections, however, the following have been found to create issues:
- Grains, especially wheat and gluten containing foods cause ‘leaky gut’. Every time we eat wheat and gluten, our gut isn’t as strong as it should be and ‘food particles’ are released into the bloodstream creating inflammation. Inflammation causes pain and disease. Wheat and gluten are not good!
- Saponin and lectin containing foods also create leaky gut and inflammation. Studies were done to find out which foods had the highest amounts of these substances: pretty much all grains contain these in differing amounts, but soy scored the highest andd rice, amaranth, wheat, barley, oats all contained these substances.
- Dairy milk creates insulin resistance, a pre-diabetic condition. It is also linked to short-sightedness and acne. Interestingly, in our clinic when we’ve improved the insulin resistance in clients, their eyesight often improves, they see things much more clearly. So kids drinking milk, getting acne and needing glasses has now been linked to being a pre-diabetic condition. Insulin in big amounts is very inflammatory! At the very least pop in to our clinic and have your insulin resistance checked out!
So basically we found compelling research that the health conditions killing people these days: cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity are very much linked to the food choices, including many ‘healthy’ choices, so once again, food needs to be individualised.
What to do?
The Paleo Diet/Mediterranean Diet/Keto Diet/Shake It Diet
These diets consistently help the body heal and repair. They all have:
- plenty of high quality proteins: meats, fish, eggs, low-fat hard cheeses, nuts and seeds
- plenty of good quality vegetables (3 handfuls per meal) and fruits (best are the berries, lots of colours, only 1/2 cup per day)
- plenty of fluids such as herbal teas, dandelion coffee, purified water
- limited grains
- limited dairy milk
- limited coffee, tea and alcohol
And then we’re looking at reducing inflammation each time we eat… For example, we could take a couple of purified fish oil capsules such at MetaPure EPA/DHA each time we eat, or some high potency gut bacteria such as Ultra Flora Immune.
So, that’s it for today,
Have a great one…

I found this article, which gives another excellent reason for keeping the waist measurement down as we get older!
“If you suffer from girth imbalance—also known as belly fat—you certainly are not alone. It is estimated that 50 percent of adult Americans carry unhealthy supplies of fat around their middle. Excess fat, particularly in the abdomen, can lead to a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and premature death. Researchers have now concluded that that creeping middle age belly fat also predisposes us to the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
Dementia is an age-related disease that robs its victims of memory and cognitive functions; things like perception, reasoning, judgment, thinking, and speech. One in ten Americans over the age of 65 suffers from some form of dementia; 60 to 80 percent suffer its most common form, Alzheimer’s disease.
Researchers at Boston University School of Medicine studied 733 adults, with an average age of 60. The group was composed of 30 percent men and 70 percent women. Each individual went through body mass (BMI) measurements as well as scans to assess abdominal fat. The results, concurrent with other similar studies, showed that as the BMI increased, brain volume decreased.
“Our data suggests a stronger connection between central obesity . . . and risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease,’ said Sudha Seshadri, leader of the study published in the journal Annals of Neurology.
This means that for people reaching middle age, their 50s and 60s, there is a direct correlation between the increase in the waistline and decrease in brain size. Consequently the chances of some form of dementia hitting this particular group of people increases.”
Madonna’s thoughts: I went to a health congress in 2009 where obesity is linked to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease via inflammation: obesity makes us inflamed, and inflammation ‘eats away at the brain’. It’s time for us to get serious about our weight loss and keep it off. It’s a challenge, but it’s important.
Talk to us today about how we can help you with your weight loss challenges!!
We do

If you are after weight loss only, you can do it easily, but it’s not safe to lose muscle! Therefore we focus on permanent weight loss through aiming to lose only fat in our fat loss programme!
Many people want to lose body fat simply so they look good, however, having a high percentage of body fat is known to be one of the risk factors in just about every chronic disease known to man. Elevated fat mass also increases muscle aches and pains and reduces energy and causes chronic fatigue and general tiredness.
In Australia and New Zealand, obesity is skyrocketing with 55-65% of men and women currently overweight or obese. 20-25% of children are also overweight or obese. The good news is that even reducing your body fat by 10% greatly reduces your risk of chronic disease. We all know it, but here are 5 great reasons to lose weight…
- Looking good means feeling great. Excess body fat can affect your self-esteem. Meeting a challenge, improving your health and looking better can improve your sense of accomplishment, self-esteem and health in countless ways. You can do it!
- Improved energy levels. Overweight and obese people have much less energy than people who have a healthy body weight. More energy means more vitality.
- Reduced risk of developing many chronic diseases. Being overweight dramatically increases your risk of developing a number of chronic diseases. Losing weight and keeping it off improves your long term health!
- Healthy ageing. Obesity is related to unhealthy, premature ageing. Consider fat loss a type of “life insurance.”
- You can empower yourself. Losing body fat is an incredibly powerful experience. You are actualising something that only you have the power to do and only you will truly experience the personal reward.
Our fat loss programme, using regular cellular analysis (to ensure muscle maintenance and fat loss) also includes huge benefits such as:
- highly discounted tests such as live blood analysis, insulin resistance…
- highly discounted treatments such as lymphatic drainage massage for moving congestion…
- highly discounted kinesiology balances for emotional reasons for weight gain – stress, self-sabotage etc
Book in to talk to our naturopaths Jacqueline Dekoke or Madonna Guy today about our fat loss programme.

Blood sugar imbalances create so many problems for people today: but it is possible not only to prevent diabetes, but also in beginning the process of reversing diabetes. We see so many people who have the beginning symptoms of sugar cravings or dizziness when it’s been a few hours since they’ve eaten.
What are the symptoms of blood sugar imbalances?
- needing to eat regularly
- dizziness if you haven’t eaten in a few hours
- hungry within an hour of eating
- sluggish liver – inability to lose weight, poor energy
- (or hungry all the time)
- mood disorders
- hormonal imbalances such as PMT & PCOS
- headaches and migraines
- chocolate cravings
There are 5 keys to preventing diabetes:
- eat a protein snack every 3-4 hours: meats, nuts, cottage cheese, cheese, tofu
- eat fish for your dinner 3 x weekly along with salmon/sardines for lunch 3-4 x per week.
- maintain a healthy weight and/or work towards a more balanced BMI (body mass index)
- use products which balance your blood sugar: for example, we utilise products such as Metagenics Insulex, Resist X, Fibroplex, Meta Oil
- exercise regularly: 30 minutes daily (minimum) has been shown to balance blood sugar and help our cells to function - usually blood sugar balancing is also about having insulin resistance, therefore the cells simply can’t take in insulin into the cells, and energy creation can’t happen effectively inside the cells.
Our solutions for blood sugar balancing:
- We have a weight loss programme (and a payment plan to save you money) to start the process of fat loss.
- We have a chronic pain programme (if pain is the reason exercise is difficult) which helps to reverse chronic pain conditions.
- We have a hormonal balancing programme (and a payment plan to save you money) to balance all of the hormones in your body. Hormones are everything! Nothing happens in your body without a hormonal component. Nothing!
- We use frequency specific microcurrent and infrared saunas to detoxify the cell membranes to detoxify insulin and allow the insulin to be utilised the way that it should.
So there are many ways we can help you, here at New Leaf Natural Therapies for your hormonal imbalances. See us today!

Fat-Loss/Weight-Loss Challenges!
It’s important to know that there are definite challenges associated with weight loss and fat loss in some people. The good thing is that at New Leaf we know what to do about it. Many programmes are designed for the quick weight loss only – low calories, lots of shakes, small portions – and that’s fine. But what we find is that there is rarely enough protein in these diets and people lose muscle mass: this leads to exhaustion and thyroid problems.
The ongoing stress with this is that people will ALWAYS put on weight again afterwards! And low fat diets lead to hormonal issues since hormones are made of proteins and fats!
We also find that people don’t detox whilst losing weight, the problem here is that fat mass holds huge amounts of toxins – it’s a fantastic storage space, so by losing weight without detoxification, we’re simply pulling toxins out of the fat mass and less it flow through the blood stream and land in the nerves, the spine, the liver, the kidneys. This can cause a multitude of other health problems.
So, the two tips here are 1. eat heaps of protein and 2. detoxify while losing weight!

Here are a few quick tips for weight loss, with the reasons why listed below. Weight loss can be challenging. Australia is gaining 6000 tonnes of fat per year, most weight loss programmes are NOT helping long term. Our weight loss programme focusses on FAT-LOSS and MUSCLE-GAIN and FLUID-BALANCE: this is the way to have sustained weight-loss long term without creating other health issues such as thyroid issues and diabetes.
- Eat a small portion of protein every 3-4 hours to keep your blood sugar balanced. Proteins and good fats contain little glucose which stores as fat. About 80-100g protein per meal, 5-6 x daily.
- Eat plenty of salad veggies and low-carb veggies. We need to eat 5-6 cupfuls of veggies per day to keep us alkaline throughout the weightloss process. The more acidic we are the less weight comes off.
- Know your thyroid numbers… take your temperature first thing in the morning before getting out of bed. If the temperature is less than 36.5 (consistently) your thyroid may be sluggish. Jacqueline Dekoke ND or I can prescribe natural supplements to help this problem. When the thyroid is dysfunctional it slows down every metabolic function in the body.
- Drink oodles of water. When the BMI is over 28 we find the body is ALWAYS dehydrated. Our high BMI and/or waist measurement over 88 are both high risks for many chronic diseases, which are also linked to dehydration and de-oxygenation of the body’s tissues. We get oxygen from breathing, water, and green leafy veggies.
- Avoid grains: rice, breads, cakes, biscuits, rolls… In weightloss grains have no value. Grains make the body more acidic which impacts negatively on weight loss. Grains are mostly carbohydrates and raise blood sugar, therefore causing the body to store fat.
- If weight loss doesn’t begin quickly, have yourself checked for the foods you are eating. Jacqueline Dekoke ND has a technique whereby we can find out if the body has an issue with particular foods. Sometimes we are eating a healthy food which isn’t doing us any favours – it may be making us acidic, not digesting and creating allergies, slow down our metabolism and cause tiredness and digestive issues.
Mostly, you need to know what your muscle mass is to start with. When we have held weight for a long time, we often lose muscle mass. This causes thyroid issues and chronic fatigue. Our Cellular Analysis (VLA) machine takes these measurements accurately and quickly. Therefore we can start you on the right treatments immediately to support your weight loss goals!
