What are Lectins?

Do you suffer from symptoms after eating? Such as digestive symptoms, foggy brain, sinus congestion or aches and pains. Do you notice it after gluten containing foods or just can’t track what’s causing it? Chances are you’re body is reacting to components in plants called lectins.

What are lectins? So happy you asked!

Lectins are the plants natural compounds to ward off pests, fungal and bacterial attack. That is, the plants natural immune system. When plants are under attack they raise their lectin numbers to fend off the attacking pests. This is the system by which pesticides work. However, pests are gaining tolerance resulting in needing an increase of pesticide to be applied to the plant and thus a further increase of the plants lectins.

Modern wheat strains vs old style grains

Our modern wheat strains have been modified to produce more lectins to be highly pest resistant. This very clever genetically engineering won Norman Borlaug a Nobel peace prize in 1970 and changed the industry inexplicably. However, years later we are discovering the health consequences of our daily foods containing such an immense amount of lectins.

Let me explain:

The modern wheat (Triticum aestivum) is a genetically engineered species containing three distinct sets of chromosomes. These chromosomes can produce over 23,000 unique proteins. Thus this modern species contains high protein and gluten levels plus wheat germ agglutinin (WGA). WGA is a lectin which provides wheat with its resistance to insect pests, yeasts and bacteria.  Interestingly WGA binds to N-acetyl D glucosamine in the chitin of the insects, disrupting their cell structures and killing them.

Why are lectins so bad?

It is this WGA (lectins)  which can also directly damage tissues of the human body wherever N-acetyl glucosamine is present, even if the individual doesn’t have any genetic predispositions or susceptibilities to immune mediated mechanisms. For example, the auto-immune conditions or inflammatory reactions. However, the presence of lectins can and do exacerbate inflammation for auto-immune conditions such as Coeliac’s Disease, making symptoms worse. This can explain why chronic inflammatory and degenerative conditions are gaining prevalence in wheat-consuming populations.  It destroys the villi in your intestines, leading to malabsorption, nutrient deficiencies and infections!

Tissues within the human body that contain N-acetyl D glucosamine are:

  • All mucosal membranes throughout the digestive system, respiratory system, etc.
  • Connective tissues in joints
  • Brain cells and organs
  • Skin
  • Arterial bifurcations, including around the heart.

It is proposed that it is the increased lectin content that are causing major health problems for people rather than gluten. For example, many Australians experience health problems after eating products made from Australian grown wheat. Where as if they travel to other countries and consume wheat based products from there they do not, i.e. France or Italy. Such countries grew different strains of wheat which were largely unmodified like our Australian grains. Hence, the end product (croissants, baguettes, pasta, pizza bases) had less lectin resulting in fewer reactions after eating. Of course this has now changed as the high yield strains are now more global.

Is it just grains which we get lectins from?

Furthermore, when livestock are fed grains high in WGA lectins this then passes through their system to the products we consume. For example, dairy milk. Therefore, if you’re experiencing symptoms after consuming dairy it may not be lactose or actual dairy protein but the lectins passed through the dairy cow to their milk. Likewise with meats, hence the advantage of consuming grass fed meats only.

There have been some notable improvements when individuals have ceased dairy and gluten products, possibly due to the decrease of consumed lectins. Some of these conditions include:

  • (Gut mucosa) – Irritable bowel syndrome:  bloating, burping, wind, flatulence, diarrhoea, constipation
  • (Joints) – arthritis, fibromyalgia
  • (Hippocampal cells) – mental and behavioural conditions
  • (Lung mucosa) – asthma
  • (Beta pancreatic cells) – diabetes
  • (Coronary artery cells) – Cardiovascular disease
  • (Skin) – psoriasis and eczema
  • Autism & Aspergers, non-verbal children and adults

How can lectin intake be reduced in diet?

As it is impossible to maintain a healthy diet and avoid lectins if you are experiencing symptoms pertaining to lectins the key is reduce intake and increase tolerance.

Firstly, even organic and spray free fresh fruit and vegetables contain lectins, but if they’re not engineered they should contain less. Grass-fed meats and dairy is the best way forward for proteins to reduce lectin intake.

How can tolerance to lectins be improved?

There is no definitive answer to improving the individual’s lectin tolerance, however there is some key things you can do. Have good healthy nutrient intake particularly zinc. The herb ginger is particularly high in zinc and is very good at reducing inflammation and calming and supporting function all along the digestive track. Having said that, if there is any history of stomach ulcers please consult your local herbalist or naturopath for advice.

And then there’s Kinesiology 🙂

How can Kinesiology help improve tolerance to lectins?

Kinesiology is a way to ask your body what is stressing it by what we call indicator muscles. It is largely based on Traditional Chinese Medicine meridian system and acupuncture points which are like reference points. Via assessing where the stress is the body can also indicate how to relieve the stress, thus reducing the symptoms one is experiencing. Therefore kinesiology balancing is a remarkable way to reduce symptoms.

What about Acupuncture and Chi Nei Tsang Abdominal Massage?

Also great ways to increase the energy to the gut, reduce stress and increase energy.  Chi Nei Tsang Abdominal Massage is nearly an hour on your gut – it helps to break down the scar tissue that has built up around the abdomen due to years of food-abuse that’s destroyed the villi –  let the healing begin!!!

7 top prescribed drugs and their side effects!

Wednesday, May 11th, 2016

I found this article in “Prevent Disease”.   Really interesting about how the top 7 drugs work – and consequences of these drugs!  Call us on 3348 6098 to discuss your health from a different perspective!

Prescription-Drugs_healthyfoodsWe don’t have to live in a medicated world, but we certainly choose to. The crux of the matter is that we refuse to proactively think about prevention because we reactively commit to treating the symptoms of underlying health problems. This is the allopathic model. We want the quick fix so we can continue our poor lifestyle and dietary habits. It doesn’t have to be this way, but it is. We can blame doctors, the medical institutions and healthcare systems all we want, but self-responsibility is our only recourse if we are ever to surface from this mess. There are no excuses–if you’re taking one of these drugs, consult with a Natural Health Practitioner this week about phasing out your medication and phasing in these powerful natural foods and remedies.

Of the over 4 billion prescriptions written every year, the United States and Canada make up more than 80% of the world’s prescription opioids (psychoactive medications). Between 1997 and 2012 prescription opioids increased in dosage by almost 500%. Pharmaceuticals and medical errors are now a leading cause of death. Painkillers are the leading cause of accidental death.

In the last 15 years of life, people are experiencing more pain for longer periods than at any point on our historical record. If you think life expectancy has increased to the benefit of mankind, you’re not looking at the numbers.

78% of U.S. prescriptions written in 2010 were for generic drugs (both unbranded and those still sold under a brand name). The most prescribed drugs aren’t always the best selling drugs, there’s a difference.

Prescriptions for pain, cholesterol reduction, high blood pressure, hypothyroidism, antacids, antipsychotics, diabetes and antibiotics make up 100% of the most prescribed drugs.

Make a commitment to yourself right now and start incorporating some of these amazing foods into your diet with no consequence of side effects. When you accept this, you will get off prescription medications for good.

Check out the top 7 most prescribed drugs and the best natural remedies to treat and prevent disease.

1. HYDROCODONE (Acetaminophen/Vicodin/Oxycontin)

Use: For Pain

Currently the single most prescribed drug in the world. More and more doctors are getting huge payouts from pharmaceutical companies to promote these hydrocodone, especially generic drugs. They make up more than 20% of the top prescribed medications.

Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), told Fox News that doctors are handing out narcotics like candy. Some doctors are giving patients prescriptions for narcotics for even minor injuries.

How it Works:
It is an orally psychoactive compound that works as a narcotic and analgesic. It is biotransformed by the liver into several metabolites. It is highly dependent on metabolism by the Cytochrome P450 pathway.

Consequences:
Respiratory depression; bradycardia; coma; seizures; cardiac arrest; liver damage; and death. Inherited genes such as the Cytochrome P450 affects metabolic pathways–some cannot process it at all, whereas a smaller percentage can get even more strength from it than usual.

Natural Foods:
Ginger, turmeric, berries, cayenne pepper, celery/celery seeds, cherries, dark green veggies, walnuts.
See: Natural Healing Remedies: 10 Foods That Fight Inflammation And Pain

2. STATINS (Generic versions of Lipitor/Zocor/Crestor)

Use: Reduction of LDL Cholesterol

Approximately 15% of the top prescribed medications are generic statins. A study published in January 2012 in the Archives of Internal Medicine linked statins to 48 percent increased risk for type-2 diabetes.

The are NO scientific studies ever documented which have proved through causation that lowering LDL cholesterol prevents disease. The obsessed culture of lowering cholesterol may actually be causing cancer.

How it Works:
Statins artificially lower cholesterol levels by inhibiting a critical enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which plays a central role in the production of cholesterol in the liver.

Consequences:
Inflammation and pathological breakdown of muscle, acute kidney failure, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, interference with sex hormones and death.

Natural Foods:
Nuts, spinach, apples, turmeric, cranberries, tomatoes, green tea, fatty fish, beans, alfalfa herb, capsicum fruit, garlic, psyllium, fenugreek seeds, butcher’s broom, licorice root, hawthorn berry.

3. LISINOPRIL (Prinivil/Zestril) AND NORVASC (Amlodipine)

Use: Reduction of High Blood Pressure

In combination, Lisinopril and Norvasc make up a whopping 23% of the top prescribed medications. This makes them the most prescribed generic medications (if combined) for cardiovascular disease and blood pressure. Individually, Lisinopril constitutes approximately 14% and Norvasc about 9%.

How it Works:
Lisinopril is typically used for the treatment of hypertension, congestive heart failure, and heart attacks. Norvasc is used for hypertension and angina. It accomplishes this by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle so it essentially interferes with the metabolism of calcium.

Consequences:
Cancer, blood disorders, development of breasts in men, impotence, depression, tachycardia, enlargement of gums, inflammation of the liver, elevated blood glucose, hepatitis, life threatening skin conditions.

Natural Foods:
Any foods high in vitamin C (chili peppers, guavas, bell peppers, thyme, parsley, dark leafy greens, broccoli), any foods high in magnesium (chocolate, green leafy vegetables, Brazil nuts, almonds, cashews, blackstrap molasses, pumpkin and squash seeds, pine nuts, and black walnuts) and any foods high in potassium (mushrooms, bananas, dark green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, oranges and dates). Coconut oil/water and CoQ10 are also very effective for lowering blood pressure.

4. SYNTHROID (levothyroxine sodium)

Use: Hypothyroidism

A synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine, generic Synthroid makes up more than 11% of the top prescribed medications. It’s used to treat hypothyroidism. The related drug dextrothyroxine (D-thyroxine) was used in the past as a treatment for elevated cholesterol but was withdrawn due to cardiac side-effects.

How it Works:
It replaces the thyroid hormone which is naturally occurring in the thyroid gland essentially halting natural production.

Consequences:
Long-term suppression of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) causes cardiac side-effects and contributes to decreases in bone mineral density (high TSH levels are also well known to contributes to osteoporosis.) May also cause elevated blood glucose levels, heart failure, coma and adrenal insufficiency. TSH directly influences the whole process of iodine trapping and thyroid hormone production so use of synthroid directly affects how the body metabolizes iodine.

Natural Foods:
Any foods containing iodine such as seaweed, kelp, radish, parsley, fish, seafood, eggs, bananas, cranberries, strawberries, himalayan crystal salt. Also, copper, iron, selenium and zinc are essential in the production of thyroid hormones. Exercise a minimum of 20-30 minutes per day — enough to raise the heartbeat.

5. PRILOSEC (omeprazole/generic versions of nexium)

Use: Antacid

A proton pump inhibitor which constitutes just over 8% of the top prescribed medications. Omeprazole is one of the most widely prescribed drugs for reflux disease (GORD/GERD/LPR) and ulcers internationally and is available over the counter in some countries.

How it Works:
It suppresses gastric acid secretion by specific inhibition of the gastric acid ions in cells. The absorption of omeprazole takes place in the small intestine essentially turning off the switch which promotes healthy digestion of foods. Omeprazole is also completely metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system.

Consequences:
Angina, ulcers, tachycardia, bradycardia, palpitations, elevated blood pressure, development of male breasts, inflammation of the pancreas, irritable colon, mucosal atrophy of the tongue, liver disease/failure, elevated blood sugar, muscle weakness, skin conditions, tinnitus, inflammation of the eyes, urinary frequency, testicular pain, anemia and blood cell disorders.

Natural Foods:
Grapefruits, probiotics, broccoli sprouts, manuka honey, mastic gum, marshmallow tea, glutamine, slippery elm, deglycyrrhized liquorice (DGL), aloe vera juice, baking soda, pickle juice.
See:

6. AZITHROMYCIN AND AMOXICILLIN

Use: Antibiotic

In combination, azithromycin and amoxicillin contribute towards a mind-blowing 17% of the top prescribed medications. Then we wonder why we have antibiotic resistance. On their own, each contributes about 8.5%. Azithromycin is one of the world’s best-selling antibiotics and derived from erythromycin. Amoxicillin is usually the drug of choice for children.

How it Works:
Inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls and interfering with their protein synthesis. These drugs also inhibit the protein synthesis of good bacteria needed for immunity and proper digestion.

Consequences:
Inflammation of the liver, inflammation and destruction of the stomach lining, destruction of healthy bacterial populations, inflammation of the colon, allergic reactions, obesity, human antibiotic resistance.

Natural Foods:
Sunlight (vit D), garlic, coconut oil, turmeric, foods high in nicotinamide (vit B3) such as salmon, sardines and nuts. Also manuka honey, olive leaf extract, green tea, pau D’Arco, rose water, myrrh, grapeseed extract, golden seal, oregon grapes, oregano oil, andrographis paniculata, and probiotics.
See:

7. GLUCOPHAGE (metformin)

Use: Oral anti-diabetic drug

Glucophage drugs round up the top 7 but the prescription rate of this drug is rapidly increasing. It makes up about 7% of the top prescribed medications. It is the first-line drug of choice for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, in particular, in overweight and obese people. It also acts to indirectly lower LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

How it Works:
By suppressing natural glucose production by the liver, the drug activates an enzyme which plays an important role in insulin signaling, whole body energy balance, and the metabolism of glucose and fats.

Consequences:
Lactic acidosis, impaired liver/kidney function, decreasing thyroid stimulating hormone and testosterone, increased homocysteine levels, malabsorption of vitamin B12, B12 deficiency, bladder cancer, heart failure. The biggest consequence of diabetes drugs is that it causes pancreatic function to substantially decrease inhibiting several hormones and causing other imbalances which are never correctable without abstaining from the drug.

Natural Foods:
Black tea, Sunlight (vit D), potentially coffee (more research needed), turmeric, nuts, chia seeds, green leafy vegetables, apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, red grapes, steel cut oatmeal, broccoli, spinach, green beans and strawberries. 90% of all cases of diabetes can be resolved by eating foods with a low glycemic load, and pursuing both weight training and aerobic exercise.

The drugs on which we spend the most money are those that are still new enough to be protected against generic competition. That’s why drugs like Abilify and Seroquel (antipsychotics), as well as Plavix (blood thinner) and Advair Diskus (asthma inhaler) don’t make the list.

Herbs – Our Little Helpers for Coughs and Colds

Tuesday, September 1st, 2015

Why is a Liquid herbal mix so effective with colds and flus?

Herbs – our little helpers. Santa Claus isn’t the only one that needs helpers, from time to time we do too. Especially around this time of year as people are often effected by those persistent coughs and colds.

Do you try to ride the cold out only to have it drag on for another few weeks and just when you’re feeling better contract another cold to do it all again? Or just come down with that one cold a season that renders you in-operational for days bordering on weeks? Either way it’s not any fun battling colds and flu.

Why is a liquid herbal mix made for you so effective? Vitamin C and zinc are well known for supporting immunity and then there’s herbs. There are many herbal supplementation formula’s so why is it better to see a naturopath specifically for a cold? Does that bottle of liquid herbs (fertiliser or twig juice otherwise affectionately known as) really work? And if so, why?

Basically, herbs are multi-faceted in action. That is each herb has many constituents which each support different aspects of body systems in different ways. In other words herbs are broad-spectrum in action. Essentially one can say that herbs can be selected to create a formula specific to support for the individual’s health needs at that time.

For example, herbs such as Echinacea and Andrographis are particularly well known as immune supporters but they both support other systems in the body which as an end result contributes to the speedy recovery of the patient. That is, Echinacea stimulates and modulates the immune system but also increases circulation, helps vasodilation and supports lymphatic drainage. That means when you’re glands are swollen with a sore throat it helps to drain them and clear away the waste products from each cell efficiently.

Whereas Andrographis stimulates the immune system and also supports liver function, stimulates bile flow and is one of the strongest anti-oxidants of the plant kingdom, which are all important actions to promote and protect each cell whilst the body is under fire of an infection.

Although the predominant focus of action of these two herbs is supporting immunity, each of them also support the body in different ways. They are both suitable herbs individually but more effective together as a team. Therefore it is advantageous to combine these two herbs in one formula for a synergistic effect. That is, different actions of herbs working in harmony to support the one overall health goal – in this case help the body fight the infection.

When considering an herbal formula for any particular pesky cold there are certain factors which are taken into consideration. Factors include:

  • Presenting symptoms – sore throat, runny nose, cough, loss of appetite, digestive changes, aches and pains, feeling of malaise
  • Progression of symptoms – how fast are these symptoms appearing? What is the usual progression for this person? Is this going faster or slower than usual
  • Health history – Does this person come down with colds & flus a lot? If so how long does it normally take to recover? Does it normally develop into secondary infections such as coughs, bronchitis, etc. Are there other factors in this persons health history which lead to this point?
  • Other current health issues – how efficiently are other systems working in the body? For example, often when the liver has a lot of detoxification to do it can impede the efficiency of the immune system and making recovery a lot more drawn out.
  • Lifestyle factors – is the person burning the candle at both ends? Are they coming into contact with other infected people?
  • External stressors – Stress does not help at all. Is this person really busy at work? Being sick can add to stress when the daily to-do list is not getting any shorter!
  • Current dietary factors – Is this person eating nutrient packed foods? If so, is it enough?
  • Sleep quality – Is this person sleeping well? Are they getting enough sleep, rest and reco-operation for the body to recovery?
  • Daily energy – how is this person’s energy throughout the day? Are they wiped out by lunchtime and reaching for stimulants for energy.
  • Iridology or constitution – Are there area’s of the body when it’s under stress needs more support than others? i.e. some people have very sensitive nervous system’s other’s have very sensitive digestive systems.

The basis for creating an efficient herbal mix for the individual relies upon the consideration of each herbal action matching them with areas of the individual’s body which needs support to reach wellbeing again. For example with a cold considerations may include an herb that stops the mucous production of the sinuses, one to preserve lung tissue tone or help calm coughing or making a cough productive (depending on what that patient’s symptoms are) and another to support adrenal function and energy. Such herbs for each of these actions may have other actions such as supporting digestion, soothing raw inflamed linings such as the throat or further antibacterial and antiviral support. When mixed together this little team of helpers all creating a synergistic effect working together to support the body as a whole to reach wellbeing again.

Anti-biotics in our food – Anti-biotics causing disease

Wednesday, August 5th, 2015

Anti-biotics are of huge importance to our health – and disease! Anti-biotics destroy our gut bacteria (as we know) but did you know that between 50 and 80% of anti-biotics in the Western world are in our foods:  pork, beef, chicken, farmed fish and other foods?  Not to mention in our GMO foods that contain anti-bioitics. Hugely linked to all kids health problems. Did you know that Genetically Modified Foods have the anti-biotics, pesticides and herbicides IN the SEEDS, so you CAN’T wash these toxins off!

We end up accidently destroying our immune system each time we eat food that contains anti-biotics.  Is our immune system keeping up with repair and maintenance?

Anti-Biotic use increases hardened, active, bacteria-laden biofilm in our body – and the combination of these are known to be linked to:

  •  cardiovascular disease: bacterial particles (linked to anti-biotic use) is found in the plaque in the arteries in heart disease
  • autism & Asperger’s:  staph & strep bacteria have been found in the basal ganglia of autistic children
  • dementia and Alzheimer’s:  it’s been known for many years that the plaque in the brain has heavy metals, xeno-oestrogens, and bacterial particles
  • diabetes:  the higher the levels of toxins stored in fat mass in the body, the more risk of diabetes.
  • ADHD & learning issues:  there is a huge gut-brain-learning connection.  The worse the gut, the harder it is to stay focussed and learn and concentrate.
  • behavioural problems:  similar issues to ADHD & Learning – behaviour problems, the brain, the gut – all linked
  • chronic fatigue & fibromyalgia: 100% of people with chronic fatigue & fibromyalgia have gut issues, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth & gut issues
  • mitochondrial dysfunction – inability to think, inability to access cellular energy – bacterial particles ‘clog up’ our mechanisms inside our cells and hinder our health
  • and so much more…

Biofilm, Infections & Chronic health problems

Tuesday, July 28th, 2015

Ew!!  Let’s talk yucky mucus!   This is a fungal ball – the result of anti-bitoics which allow fungus to grow, and then the body releases mucus to sop up the fungus.  Yuck!

Research is showing that biofilm (a mucus substance that is released to ‘sop up’ bacterial, fungal and viral particles) in the average person – with a normal history of vaccines and anti-biotic use, is holding up to 20 chronic infections in our bodies.  Why?

  • Anti-biotic use:  one dose of anti-biotics can destroy our gut lining, and our bacterial, viral and fungal combination in our gut for up to 7 years IF we haven’t done anything to repair the dose.  Because anti-biotics upset our gut lining, our body makes biofilm to help to soothe it, often containing the bug-particles that we’ve been killing off.  Anti-biotics are anti-bacterial – but they may allow candida, fungus, viruses or cancer cells to get out of hand…
  • Pain killers – yep!  Any medical pain killers are anti-inflammatory by nature (makes sense!) but did you know that the process of killing bad bacteria or viruses or fungus or candida or cancer cells is indeed inflammatory?  In other words, the more pain killers we take, the more chronic infections we can have lurking in our systems.  If you take pain-killers you must be on probiotics to balance your body

  • Vaccines – the ‘adjuvants’ in vaccines – the mercury and aluminium – are highly toxic to the gut lining and to our immune cells.  These heavy metals not only make our bodies need to make more biofilm, but they destroy good gut bacteria and good gut viruses and can turn them into nasty disease forming bugs.
  • We have 24,000 genes which will last our lifetime.  We have between 1000-2500 different types of bacteria, viruses, candida, fungal ‘bugs’ living in our bodies all the time (making up trillions of cells – this is our microbiome) – Bugs have a short shelf life – and as THEY replicate, THEY are learning how to live in OUR bodies.  If we’re stressed – they’re learning to live in a stressful environment.  If we’re toxic – they’re learning how to live in a toxic environment.

Where does the biofilm live in our bodies?

  • in our lungs (asthma), throat, sinuses (allergies), brain (it’s linked with dementia, autism, aspergers), heart (it’s linked with heart disease), abdominal cavity (linked to menstrual issues, gut issues and fertility issues), intestines (constipation, IBS, Crohns, diarrhoea), skin (acne, psoriasis, chronic skin issues)

What can we do about biofilm?

  • Kinesiology and Microcurrent helps your body to activate biofilm so that the immune system can recognise it and start dealing with it.
  • There are herbs, supplements and essential oils which help to break down biofilm and release old infections (so that we can deal with them) – favourite supplements at New Leaf are Bactrex, Parex, NasoClear, Herbal Throat Spray and N-acetyl cysteine.
  • Boost the immune system, tone the organs that have been damaged (lungs, gut, brain, throat, intestines), deal with the infections as they are released from deep inside and improve the way the body copes with stress.
  • Chi Nei Tsang and Reflexology can support the body in breaking down biofilm and boosting the immunity.

We can help.  Biofilm is linked to all chronic disease – not to mention kids health.

First Aid Kit – Colds and Viruses

Saturday, April 18th, 2015

With the colder months about to start and the year in full swing come busy days, exhaustion and for some families the inevitable colds and virus season. So what are some go to natural solutions we can keep in the cupboard/fridge and dose up on the first signs of colds? This can save valuable time and help to prevent the virus or cold from developing into something more serious like days of work and school. Here is a good all round First Aid Kit for Colds and Viruses.

  • Andrographis Complex by Mediherb or Andro NK by Metagenics (available at New Leaf Natural Therapies). When a cold is rapidly taking effect it is good to start Andrographis Complex as soon as possible. Dose: 2 tablets 3 times daily for an adult dosage. Can take every two hours for vigour viruses.
  • Zinc. Zinc is a mineral that is utilised around the body for many different reasons including skin repair, immunity, detoxification and as a catalyst for a myriad of enzymatic reactions around the body. Therefore it is in high demand especially with today’s modern lifestyle and exposure to our environment, such as car fumes, perfumes, plastics etc. Zinc is a major mineral for the immune system and usually very easy to replenish in the system. Therefore, at the first sign of a cold or a virus zinc is a good mineral to dose up on. Dose: a therapeutic dosage range is between 20-40 mg per day. However, if a virus rapidly taking hold and zinc levels are low it is generally acceptable it increase that dose by 2 or 3 times for 4 to 5 days.
  • Vitamin C. Vitamin is widely known for it’s role in immunity and for good reason. Vitamin C stabilises the immune cells and is an excellent anti-oxidant which is in need when a virus is spreading. Vitamin C works alongside zinc synergistically and therefore are often in formula’s together. For a virus taking at least 3,000 – 4,000 mg in 500 – 1000 mg increments throughout the day. For a rapidly moving virus it is recommended to take 1000 mg up to what is called bowel tolerance. Bowel tolerance is essentially how much vitamin C the bowel can absorb. If it can’t absorb any more the vitamin C will remain in the lumen of the bowel and attract water to it thus bowel movements become looser. Sometimes a lot looser. Therefore once someone has reached bowel tolerance drop the dose by 1 -2 doses the next day and stay on that until the virus has run its course.
  • Probiotics. Ultra Flora Immune by Metagenics. The immune system is produced on the other side of our digestive system. Therefore the quality of the digestive process can affect the production of the immune system. There are many different species of probiotics which all extenuate different processes and functions, some in a negative manner, some not at all and some in a positive manner. Therefore it can be tricky to figure out which probiotics are right however when coming down for a cold reach for the probiotics that help stabilise the digestion and support the immune system. It is good to have what is called a loading dose for a 3 – 7 days and then drop to a maintenance dose. This is to support the immune system to make new cells if it needs to which can take up to 7 – 10 days i.e. 2 capsules twice a day before food for a loading dose and then drop to 1 capsule twice a day for the duration of the cold. If a virus is a common occurrence it would be recommended to have a maintenance dose of 1 capsule per day for 1 – 3 month afterwards.
  • Naso Clear by Metagenics. Whenever there is any congestion especially in sinuses which are prone to infection a god sinus flush works wonders! Naso Clear is not only a antibacterial but also breaks down any films which can form that bacteria harbour in making it difficult for the immune system to search and destroy them. One to two pumps per nostril at least first thing in the morning and again before bed can work absolute wonders!
  • Herbal Throat Spray by Mediherb. Sore throats can be the entry point of many viruses and therefore good to soothe and assist in maintaining the area’s defences. Herbs helps to do just that by soothing, antibacterial/antiseptic actions and helps support lymphatic drainage so the immune system can reach the area and carry away the
    • We’ve all heard of gargles, but who has time to gargle during a busy day? So a spray can be very convenient!
  • Homeopathics. Homeopathics can work really well for the sensitive people, easy to take and gentle on the pocket! BioResearch Formula 5 is a good immune supporter especially with re-occuring sore throats, colds and flu’s. For infections which have gone into secondary infections Formula C or Formula CR for chest coughs. Homeopathics should be taken 10-15minute away from strong flavours such as toothpaste, breathmints or even strong coffee.
  • Cells need weekends too! In a word recuperation and convalescents. If it is the beginning of a cold a warm easy to digest meal such as soup or casserole is great. These meals often need time to cook thus the food is already starting to break down and less work for the digestion to do. Rug up, get comfortable and enjoy some cosiness for the evening.. down time is a the path the new convalescence.

Far Infrared Sauna Therapy (F.I.R.S.T.)

Far Infrared (F.I.R.) is a form of radiant heat that gently heats objects directly without heating the surrounding air, like traditional saunas.  Traditional saunas use steam and hot air to heat up the external environment whereas the F.I.R. Saunas heat is a softer and gentler penetrating the skin upto 4 cm in depth thus having an effect on the deep skin layers. As a result blood circulation is increased to the skin cells and increasing repair of damaged capillaries. With an increase of blood supply to the area there is an increase of oxygen and nutrients delivered to the cells and waste products from the cells are carried out creating an overall improvement of skin cell function.

F.I.R. Saunas also has positive results with skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, eczema and general lumps and bumps. The increase in circulation helps to clear blocked pores, release the deeply embedded unwanted debris and infection. Thus as a consequence the sebaceous glands shrink as the skin system is working more efficiently.

F.I.R. Saunas activates adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in the skin cells. ATP is the major source of energy for each cell to function. Therefore the more ATP each cell makes allows for the uptake of nutrients and dumping of the waste products out for clearing faster and more effectively. That is, ATP fuels processes within the cells that kill bacteria. Combined with the increase of circulation supports skin repair and recovery from skin disorders such as acne, cystic acne, boils, skin infections and rough dull skin.

F.I.R. Saunas also assist detoxification processes around the body. the toxins in the blood which are usually processed by the liver or kidneys are released through the sweat and out of the body by the increase of circulation. This decreases the impact on the kidneys and liver which frees them up to bereplenished (particularly the liver as it can regenerate itself).

Furthermore F.I.R. Saunas support immunity. With the increase in circulation the body is heated up thus creating an artificial fever which in turn promotes a natural healing response and helps the body to combat any viral or bacterial infections.

In combination with massage F.I.R. Saunas can be beneficial for both detoxification and deep tissue massage. That is, a massage followed by a F.I.R. Saunas will further to support he detoxification processes which have started in the massage. Where is a F.I.R. Saunas followed by a massage will increase the circulation thus allowing the depth of the massage to be more thorough.

Chronic Fatigue, Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Depression, Chronic Pain Conditions – there is help!

Wednesday, August 20th, 2014

What may all of these conditions have in common?  Chronic Fatigue, Depression, Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Chronic Pain Conditions are all linked to:

  1. Old infections that haven’t been fully resolved.  The ‘particles’ and ‘byproducts’ of these old infections, staph or strep, e-coli, glandular fever EBV etc etc, live in the tissues in the body and do not show up in regular blood tests.  It is estimated by some researchers that up to 80% of infections live in the biofilm, hidden deep inside the tissues in the body, and create a low-grade inflammation that is hard to shift medically. Depression is an inflammatory process – we simply can’t have depression without brain inflammation – there’s such a huge gut-brain connection that current research is looking at infections crossing the blood-brain barrier and being one of the many causes of depression.  Herbal tonics, nutritionals, chi nei tsang abdominal massage and kinesiology all help the body to break down the biofilm, recognise the infections, and start eliminating these toxins.
  2. Poor nutritional status:  recommended daily allowances of nutrients are ridiculously low (and totally useless) when we have a chronic health condition – of any sort.  Studies done in the 1970’s with Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia showed (40 years ago) that all nutritional needs were higher once we’re stressed, in pain, not sleeping, working too hard, bed-ridden.  So a multi-vitamin or thinking we’re going to get the nutrition from our foods was disproven decades ago.
  3. When we’re unwell, our body goes into ‘crisis mode’.  That is, it starts running survival patterns which override normal day to day activities – digestion, blood pressure, lung activity, muscular function – this is why a cold or flu, or small car accident, or death in the family – can trigger a weird group of symptoms that often aren’t put together as being linked to the initial incident or episode.  We start to put together these parts of your history, so that the medical conditions that have occurred finally make sense.

We specialise in supporting people with chronic health conditions – nutritionally giving the cells what they need, structural balancing to take the pressure of the body, survival pattern kinesiology to allow the body to start healing… and much more.  Our Foundations of Health programme, particularly (which takes 9-18 months), is designed to work through cleansing the major filters of the body – the gut & digestion, the liver, the kidneys and immune systems – which slowly but surely allows all of the individual cells of the body to have better nutritional status, improves detoxification and improves health.

Madonna on 4BC Health Talk…

Sunday, June 29th, 2014

Tonight we’re chatting about a couple of topics we’ve seen lots of in the clinic lately:

Topic # 1 – Vitamin D deficiency and winter depression. I’ve taken the following article from Dr Mercola.com Vitamin D is incredible – it affects all of our hormonal and immune functions, is involved in mental health and leaky gut. It improves our genes and is something to definitiely take into consideration for cancer prevention – all cancers!

Vitamin D deficiency is one of those things that many Aussies have and is becoming more prevalent worldwide.

Vitamin D influences over 10 percent of your genes. Vitamin D deficiency is epidemic across the world and could be contributing to hundreds of common health problems. There are 33,800 medical papers on vitamin D, and this veritable mountain of research shows that vitamin D has far-reaching benefits to your physical and mental health.

Recent research found significant interaction between vitamin D levels and inflammatory bowel disease
Vitamin D supplementation has also been found to reduce both depression and pain in diabetic women
Studies show that vitamin D has tremendous protective effects against a variety of different cancers, including pancreatic, lung, ovarian, breast, prostate, and skin cancers

Vitamin D Might Be Able to Slash Your Breast Cancer Risk by 90 Percent

Vitamin D research continues to impress upon us the importance of appropriate sun exposure as the ideal way to optimize your vitamin D levels.

Winter limits sun exposure for many up to six months of the year. Even in states such as Queensland there is a massive vitamin D deficiency.

It has become abundantly clear that vitamin D deficiency is a growing epidemic across the world and could be contributing to hundreds of common health problems. In fact, correcting your vitamin D deficiency may cut your risk of dying from any cause by 50 percent, according to one analysis.

If this sounds too incredible to be true, consider that vitamin D influences nearly 3,000 of your 24,000 genes. This occurs via vitamin D receptors, which can be found throughout your body, and should come as no great surprise given that humans evolved in the sun.

Vitamin D Beneficially Affects Gene Activity

Just one example of an important gene that vitamin D up-regulates is your ability to fight infections and chronic inflammation. It also produces over 200 anti-microbial peptides, the most important of which is cathelicidin, a naturally-occurring broad-spectrum antibiotic.

This is one of the explanations for why vitamin D is so effective against colds and influenza.

According to a January 2013 press release by Orthomolecular Medicine, there are now 33,800 medical papers with vitamin D in the title or abstract, and this veritable mountain of research shows that vitamin D has far-reaching benefits to your physical and mental health. Such research has shown that vitamin D can improve:

•Pregnancy outcomes (reduced risk of Cesarean section and pre-eclampsia)
•Type 1 and 2 diabetes
•Heart disease and stroke
•Autism, Alzheimer’s, and other brain dysfunction
•Bacterial and viral infections

Some of the most recently published studies, which I’ll review here, demonstrate how boosting your vitamin D levels can improve depression and pain in diabetics, Crohn’s disease, and breast cancer.

Relevance of Vitamin D in Crohn’s Disease

While previous research has associated low vitamin D levels with an increased risk of Crohn’s disease and shown that correcting your vitamin D deficiency can improve symptoms of the disease, one of the most recent studies found a “significant interaction between vitamin D levels and Crohn’s disease susceptibility, as well as a significant association between vitamin D levels and genotype.”

Serum vitamin D levels were found to be significantly lower in patients with Crohn’s disease. Of the seven DNA sequence variations examined for effects, two variants showed a significant association with vitamin D levels in those with Crohn’s, and four variants were associated with vitamin D levels among controls.

In short, it shows that vitamin D can affect genetic expression associated with Crohn’s disease, and make matters either better or worse, depending on whether you have enough of it or not.

Vitamin D May Reduce Depression and Pain

In related news, vitamin D supplementation has been found to reduce both depression and pain in diabetic women. As reported by PsychCentral:

“The investigators set out to determine how vitamin D supplementation might affect women with type 2 diabetes who were also suffering from depression.

At the beginning of the study, 61 percent of women reported neuropathic pain, such as shooting or burning pain in their legs and feet, and 74 percent had sensory pain, such as numbness and tingling in their hands, fingers and legs.

During the course of the study, the participants took a 50,000 IU vitamin D2 supplement every week for 6 months (7,000 iu daily). By the end of the study, the women’s depression levels had significantly improved following the supplementation.

Furthermore, participants who suffered from neuropathic and/or sensory pain at the beginning of the study reported that these symptoms decreased at 3 and 6 months following vitamin D2 supplementation.”

Additional support for the theory that vitamin D can be beneficial in the fight against type 2 diabetes was published in last year. Here, the researchers found “a strong additive interaction between abdominal obesity and insufficient 25(OH)D in regard to insulin resistance.” They also claim 47 percent of the increased odds of insulin resistance can be explained by the interaction between insufficient vitamin D levels and a high body mass index (BMI).

Yet another study published in Diabetes Care also suggests vitamin D supplements may help prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus in people with pre-diabetes. While the study is only an observational one and cannot establish causality, the researchers report that the participants who had the highest vitamin D levels were 30 percent less likely to develop diabetes during the three-year evaluation period, compared to those with the lowest levels.

Cut Your Breast Cancer Risk with Vitamin D, Cancer Surgeon Suggests

Meanwhile, a recent Science World Report highlighted the recommendation by British breast cancer surgeon, Professor Kefah Mokbel, who urges women to take daily vitamin D supplements to cut their risk of breast cancer. According to the featured article:

“Prof. Mokbel has also requested Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary, to make [vitamin D] pills freely available as this would result in saving about a 1,000 lives annually. ‘I am calling for all women from the age of 20 to be given free vitamin D supplements on the NHS because it is effective in protecting against breast cancer,’ Prof. Mokbel said.

Vitamin D Is Critical for Cancer Prevention

Indeed, an ever growing number of studies show that vitamin D has tremendous protective effects against a variety of different cancers, including pancreatic, lung, ovarian, breast, prostate, and skin cancers. Theories linking vitamin D deficiency to cancer have been tested and confirmed in more than 200 epidemiological studies, and understanding of its physiological basis stems from more than 2,500 laboratory trials.

For example, a 2007 study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine concluded that a serum 25(OH)D level of more than 33 ng/mL was associated with a 50 percent lower risk of colorectal cancer. And research published in the International Journal of Cancer two years ago found that a mere 10 ng/ml increase in serum vitamin D levels was associated with a 15 percent reduction in colorectal cancer incidence and 11 percent reduction in breast cancer incidence.

Another 2007 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that after four years of follow up, cancer-free survival was 77 percent higher in women who received 1,100 IU vitamin D and 1,450 mg calcium per day, compared to those who received either a placebo or calcium by itself. According to Carole Baggerly, founder of GrassrootsHealth, as much as 90 percent of ordinary breast cancer may in fact be related to vitamin D deficiency. Breast cancer has even been described as a “vitamin D deficiency syndrome,” much like the commoncold and seasonal flu.

Most Important—Maintaining Optimal Vitamin D Serum Levels

Of utmost importance is the maintenance of a therapeutically beneficial serum level year-round. Here, studies indicate that the bare minimum for cancer prevention is around 40 ng/ml. Research suggests an ideal level might be around 60-80 ng/ml. A 2009 review article15 titled: “Vitamin D for Cancer Prevention: Global Perspective,” published in Annals of Epidemiology states that:

“Higher serum levels of the main circulating form of vitamin D, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), are associated with substantially lower incidence rates of colon, breast, ovarian, renal, pancreatic, aggressive prostate and other cancers. Epidemiological findings combined with newly discovered mechanisms suggest a new model of cancer etiology that accounts for these actions of 25(OH)D and calcium. Its seven phases are disjunction, initiation, natural selection, overgrowth, metastasis, involution, and transition (abbreviated DINOMIT). Vitamin D metabolites prevent disjunction of cells and are beneficial in other phases.

It is projected that raising the minimum year-around serum 25(OH)D level to 40 to 60 ng/mL (100–150 nmol/L) would prevent approximately 58,000 new cases of breast cancer and 49,000 new cases of colorectal cancer each year, and three fourths of deaths from these diseases in the United States and Canada, based on observational studies combined with a randomized trial.

Such intakes also are expected to reduce case-fatality rates of patients who have breast, colorectal, or prostate cancer by half… The time has arrived for nationally coordinated action to substantially increase intake of vitamin D and calcium.” [Emphasis mine]

Urinary Tract Infections – do we really need to take anti-biotics?

Tuesday, January 21st, 2014

Great question from a client today… ‘What can I do if I get a urinary tract infection, anything naturally? Can we avoid anti-biotics?’ Gabby, our intuitive energy healer also asked me the same question about 6 years ago, having been seeing me for many years. Interesting for me, this client has been seeing me on and off for 5 years (at a guess) and here’s the answer. Yes. We can treat anything naturally.

Urinary Tract Infections can be chronic, frustrating and stressful.  They can affects our relationships, our sex life, our fertility.  We can do urine tests to find out how active/nasty they are and live blood screenings to find out how much work we need to do to get your urinary tract health and happy again!

For example, there are great urinary tract herbs such as bearberry, buchu, crataeva and nettles, all of which help to take the pain and itch out of the urinary tract.  We would combine them with  immune boosting herbs such as golden seal, andrographis, Echinacea.

Vitamin C is a naturopathic must!  We need to flood the urinary tract with vitamin C – a minimum of 280mg per hour so that the excess goes straight to the urinary tract (kidneys and bladder), boosts the immunity, destroys the bacterial or viral particles that are attached to the bladder wall, and effectively stops the biofilm from building up and allowing old viral and bacterial particles to live in it, and wait until our defences are down and then they cause another infection.

NCD zeolite (fully-cleansed): also pulls viral and bacterial particles out of the body so our body doesn’t create ‘biofilm’ for the particles to live in, thereby creating a chronic low level infection that doesn’t show up in blood tests but causes problems.

There are many other things we can do:  Chi Nei Tsang Abdominal Massage;  Boost the immune system with kinesiology; other herbs, other supplements & nutrients.

So yes, we can treat anything, and treat it well!
