Lupus & Other Auto-Immune Conditions – A Naturopathic Perspective
Auto-Immune conditions such as lupus require balance throughout life. Medically the options are limited: harsh medications that don’t actually fix the underlying causes (and clog up the major organs of the body so they’re are more dysfunctional), but there is SO MUCH WE CAN DO to help to balance the body and keep the symptoms as minimal as possible.
1. Look after your gut: 70-80% of the immune system is in the gut – Lupus/Auto-immune conditions occur when the immune system is overstimulated into attacking certain tissues of the body. In other words, the body can think that your skin, or your thyroid, or your ligaments and tendons are a virus or bacteria and then the immune system works hard to kill it!! That’s why we feel so dreadful when an auto-immune system is in full swing.
Keys to looking after your gut:
Know your allergies/intolerances
Find out if you have DPP4 enzyme deficiencies
Are you gut enzymes working to break down sugars, carbohydrates, proteins and fats?
Is your pancreas balancing your blood sugar on a daily basis?
Has your body dealt with old viruses and viral particles?
Do you have leaky gut/gut permeability?
Is there heavy metal toxicity in the gut, that is shutting down the enzyme release from the gut?
Vitamin D deficiency is one cause of leaky gut – getting some sunshine daily?
2. Decrease stress in your world: what are your major stress triggers? Stress is one of the intangible causes of auto-immune conditions. Stress can shut down your gut, overload your liver, make it really challenging to balance your blood sugar, increase your adrenal stress and shut down your thyroid and so much more. Stress is huge and finding a way to deal with it daily it crucial with chronic health conditions such as auto-immunity! Try the following:
Yoga and meditation
Kinesiology balancing to help eliminate old stress patterns and boost immunity
Relaxing Massage has been found to increase feel good hormones and lower pain levels
There are supplements that can be prescribed that help to destress the nerves, balance the hormones, boost feel-good hormones and more
Sleep – a good night sleep is so important to maintain good health, immunity and wellbeing
3. Full Filter Detox: It is so important to keep your body’s filtering mechanisms as functional as possible throughout life. The immune system is one of the filters – for the body to kick an auto-immune system into action, our filters can’t have been working properly… The core filters of the body are the digestive tract (stomach, small intestine, large intestine), liver, immune system (crucial in cleansing the blood every second of every day) and the kidneys. If these are dysfunctional it’s not hard to imagine our body will be filling up with toxins and our immune system will struggle!
Testing Processes we can do to keep on top of our health:
Live Blood Screenings: with this fabulous technique we are looking at red and white blood cells – your red blood cells make up 1/4 of all the cells in your body – we can see instantly immune dysfunction, liver stress (fibrinogen), signs of leaky gut, signs of parasites and more… Just 1 drop of blood.
Urine Tests: Multisticks and Urinary Indicans – these urine tests allow us to find out if we are digesting our proteins, if we have an underlying infection, if our kidneys are fully functional or struggling, if we have too much bad bacteria in the gut and more… Simple.
Candida and Helicobacter Tests: are there underlying issues such as these causing problems that we don’t even know about?
Kinesiology for allergies/intolerances/energy mismatches/DPP4 enzyme deficiencies – find out what foods should be in your world and what shouldn’t. There are so many intolerances where the only symptom is the auto-immune condition itself. We can help you target your diet to be the best it can be.
Insulin Resistance Testing: we are one of the few places who test for insulin resistance. Doctors check for blood sugar and don’t even think about diabetes until it’s through the roof. This test finds pre-diabetic conditions early, and then we know how to fix it!

Keep coming up iron deficient in blood tests – but not much else?? Feel like you’re always trying to boost the levels but as soon as you stop taking the supplements the levels drop again? Here are a bunch of ideas for you:
* if iron deficiency shows up in normal blood tests – you’re within the worst 10% levels in QLD – not happy jan!
* if iron deficiency shows up in live blood screenings at New Leaf – we can find other reasons for the iron deficiency (gut, liver, oxidative stress)
* iron is challenging to absorb from food – we need heaps of ‘good’ gut acid (HCL) in the stomach and only absorb it in 8 inches of the small intestines
* if we are stressed or inflamed we don’t absorb our iron
* if we are ‘mucussy’ people – sinuses, bloating, asthmatic – mucus through these areas can block the absorption of iron through the intestines
* if we have heavy metal toxicity through the gut – stomach or small intestines we can block the absorption of iron
* if our bone marrow is dysfunctional – we can’t release new red blood cells correctly/perfectly – and they will be too small (iron deficient) – this not only impacts on energy, but the ability to absorb many other nutrients such as B12, folate, oxygen, zinc, essential fatty acids – no wonder we get so tired!
* it takes a minimum of 4 months to rebuild iron levels if we are deficient (as seen in live blood screenings) as we can’t change the size of the red blood cells that are in your bloodstream – it’s as the new cells come through from the bone marrow with the correct nutrition they start to change size and shape. It takes time and energy!
Favourite iron supplements: Hemagenics Vegiecare (available at New Leaf): contains a fantastic form of bioavailable iron (most do nothing), along with a chunky dose of B12 and folate;
Dose: extremely deficient: 1, three x daily
Dose: moderately deficient: 1, twice daily
Dose: tired, deficient, not too bad – 1 daily
If gut issues: G-Tox (available at New Leaf): 1 scoop daily to help absorption of iron.

Fat in our body is a storage unit. Many people know that we store fat soluble vitamins such as vitamins A & D, vitamin E and essential fatty acids in our fat and liver in our body. So this is a good thing. Fat also keeps us warm and gives us that glow of good health when in perfect harmony with muscle and a great diet and lifestyle.
As a storage unit however, fat is known to store many toxins. The body insulates us from these toxins by storing toxins in our nervous system (brain, spinal cord, nerves), our liver, our bones and our fat mass.
We store toxins such as the following in our fat mass:
- heavy metals such as aluminium, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, lead…
- pesticides, herbicides and other food-toxins
- preservatives, colourings, flavourings
- stress hormones such as cortisol, adrenalin, noradrenalin…
- pain hormones
- drug residue – any drugs commonly taken such as pain killers, the OCP, anti-depressants etc
- insulin (is your tummy fat getting bigger as you get older)
- dodgy oestrogens & dodgy testosterones (the ones that cause mood swings, cancers of the reproductive tracts)
So, you can imagine when you start a weight loss programme, particularly a successful programme such as the HCG diet or the Shake It/Keto Programmes the fat loss will start (almost immediately) and these toxins will be released into the bloodstream to be eliminated.
In our clinic, in order to find out how you are coping with these toxins we may recommend:
- ph testing – oral & urine to find out how well your body is coping with toxins through the whole digestive tract;
- urinary indicans – lets us know how much dodgy bacteria your body has, therefore liver detoxification would be exceptionally dangerous at that stage;
- live blood screening – lets us know how ‘leaky’ your gut is, stressed your liver is, whether toxins are running rampant through your bloodstream and more
- kinesiology balancing to release heavy metals; to re-boot the brain after post-traumatic stress syndrome,
- infrared saunas – we have 2 private rooms – infrared saunas penetrate 6cm under the skin instantly – this mobilises toxins from the fat tissue, blood stream, bone, spinal cord and releases them to be removed from your body…
So, fat loss WITHOUT detoxification can be very dangerous. We have seen cases of people getting chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, migraines after weight loss without detoxification. There are simple things you can talk to us about that will be safe, easy and effective to both lose weight healthily AND detox simultaneously…

So you’ve had every test done under the sun, and they can’t find anything wrong.
We can help!
We are specialists in finding the causes of problems such as chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia! Here are a few things your doctor may never have told you:
- Genetic breakdown – we can see in live blood analysis a damaged monocyte – monocytes should have one nuclei, and yet when our telomeres (which protect our genes from damage) shrink, the monocytes start having more than one nuclei – we can see this and determine if this is part of your chronic fatigue/fibromyalgia.
- Liver Toxicity – the liver does a million things – we all know this, but it’s not a very good multi-tasker. If it is overloaded by stress hormones, adrenalin hormones, pain hormones or toxicity from an environmental cause, then quite often it just shuts down. Normal liver tests only show us when the liver is breaking down. We can see signs with live blood analysis and bio-impedance analysis… further signs that the medical tests aren’t looking for.
- Caffeine/Sugar/Wheat/Dairy Addiction – if our body has low cellular energy (which we can determine correctly from VLA/bio-impedance analysis testing), then we turn to foods, caffeine, sugar, wheat and dairy to give us what we need… Wheat and dairy, particularly, can cause total exhaustion if we have a DPP4 enzyme deficiency – this can cause wheat and dairy to create ‘opioids’ in the bloodstream. Opioids can cause either total exhaustion or manic behaviour depending on how it affects us. If it’s caffeine and sugar, these exhaust the adrenal glands further and make the chronic fatigue last longer.
- Allergies: quite often people have NO signs of allergies other than exhaution. Over the years we’ve seen allergy signs such as depression and anxiety, stress, hormonal toxicity, pain, headaches and migraines and more. We use live blood analysis and kinesiology to determine how allergic the body is and what we’re allergic to. This is VERY DIFFERENT to medical allergy testing. We also find sensitivites and intolerances, which can cause all of the huge problems that allergies do. We also do a rotational diet, where appropriate, and slowly re-introduce foods and find out if they are causing issues.
- Insulin Resistance: Doctors will always check for blood sugar, but rarely (we’ve NEVER seen it) checked for insulin resistance. You can have the most perfect diet, but not be getting nutrients out of your food. All cells, including the brain, require insulin for energy. If your body is insulin resistant, you are not getting energy from your food, you are burning muscle and muscle nutrients for energy… this is a very bad, pre-diabetic condition.
- What do we suggest for long-term improvement and recovery from chronic fatigue syndrome/fibromyalgia? Firstly we need to safely, carefully and slowly detoxify. We use a combination of infrared saunas, frequency specific microcurrent, natural supplements such as Adrenotone, Resist X, Meta B Complex. For oestrogen detoxification we use Estrofactors, Meta I3C, OestroCalm. For Adrenal and nerve regeneration we use Adaptan, Stressan, Relaxan and Resilian. For liver toxicity we use Phyto Essentials, PhytoPro, Lipogen and Silymarin. We also recommend lymphatic drainage massage and kinesiology to help detoxify emotional toxins, liver toxins etc.

Burning Pain in the Stomach
When you go to your doctor and complain of pain and burning in your solar plexus, and he recommends Zantac or Tagamet for an ulcer, ask him what he thinks about the ‘theory’ that this condition is caused by an infection. If he gives you the old doctor-shrug, decline his prescriptions, pay him for his time, and come and see us and have a helicobacter pylori test and a live blood screening.
Helicobacter is a genus of spiral bacteria that amazingly are able to survive the severe acidity of the stomach. We have known of the existence of such bacteria since 1889 but it wasn’t until nearly 100 years later that the significance of these bacteria was realized.
Until the 1980’s, stomach ulcers were treated with an assortment of antacids with the idea that excess acid had caused the ulcer. In fact, most stomach and duodenal ulcers of humans stem from infection with Helicobacter bacteria.
Helicobacter survives the extreme acidity of the stomach by using enzymes to create its own layer of protective bicarbonate. This little “safety suit” allows the bacteria to burrow into the stomach’s mucus layer. Its presence generates inflammation in the stomach tissue.
Many patients are colonized by Helicobacter and do not develop symptoms; however, if Helicobacter penetrates deeply enough, it will bind to the mucus secreting cells of the stomach disrupting their ability to produce normal mucus.
Ultimately, the mucus lining is disrupted, stomach acid gains access to the stomach tissue, and burning results. Ulcers are thus formed. Making matters worse, Helicobacter organisms are able to stimulate extra acid secretion by the stomach tissue. More burning and more ulcers result and soon the patient is experiencing pain, nausea and/or vomiting.
H. pylori infection is most likely acquired by ingesting contaminated food and water and through person to person contact. In the United States, 30% of the adult population is infected. (50% of infected persons are infected by the age of 60.)
The infection is more common in crowded living conditions with poor sanitation. In countries with poor sanitation, 90% of the adult population can be infected
If you have a chronic infection with H. pylori, it weakens the natural defences of the lining of the stomach against the ulcerating action of acid and can cause severe health problems. Live Blood Analysis lets us know how damaged the gut and the liver are in relation to the Helicobacter. If you are one of the 50% who don’t have helicobacter, then the live blood analysis gives plenty of other information and reasons for the pain in your tummy.
To find out whether or not you have an ulcer, it can’t hurt to test for H. pylori. Call us today on 07 3348 6098 and book in for a helicobacter pylori test and live blood analysis. Ask if there are any website specials for this combination of tests!
Yours in Health

Dangers and Radiation from High-Tech screenings: MRI’s Catscans Mammograms X-rays
I found this article on Oprah’s website – Dr Oz…
thought you might find it interesting…
What we find in our clinic in live blood analysis and BLA bio-impedance analysis – poor immunity, disrupted white blood cell activity, poor liver function, inflamed cells, poor quality muscle mass, fluid imbalances to name a few…

High-tech screenings could be exposing you to unnecessary radiation. Mehmet Oz, MD, explains how to dial down your dose.
Radiation is all around us—we absorb it every day from gases, minerals, and sunlight—and in small amounts, it’s nothing to worry about. But Americans today are exposed to seven times more radiation from diagnostic medical imaging tests than they were 30 years ago—thanks to the expanded use of X-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans, and mammograms.
CT scans are the biggest culprits, delivering as much as 500 times the radiation of a standard X-ray, and potentially causing an estimated 1.5 to 2 percent of all cancers in the United States. More than 16 million CT scans were performed in hospital emergency rooms in 2007, up from 2.7 million in 1995, and a 2010 study found that more than a quarter of CT scans are being ordered by primary care physicians for the wrong reasons (for instance, to check for blood in the urine in a patient with a urinary tract infection).
I don’t want to scare you away from needed tests. When used properly, these scans have more benefits than risks. But there are a few ways you can protect yourself:
1. Keep a record of your CT scans, PET scans, and X-rays, and note any radiation treatment for cancer, plus any occupational radiation exposure (for example, if you work on an airline crew). Give a copy to your doctor.
2. The next time your physician recommends a diagnostic scan, ask:
- How will having this exam improve my care?
If the test’s outcome won’t change the diagnosis, you shouldn’t have it done.
- Are there equally good alternatives?
Some diagnostic scans, such as MRI or ultrasound, don’t emit radiation. If you need a CT scan and you weigh less than 180 pounds, your doctor may be able to decrease the radiation dose.
- Can you use an older test result?
Let your doctor know if you’ve received any imaging at another office or hospital within the past five years. He may be able to reexamine the results and spare you another round of radiation.
3. Wear a thyroid guard and lead apron during dental X-rays—recent research suggests that repeated exposure may be linked to thyroid cancer if patients aren’t properly protected. And ask whether you can receive a digital X-ray, which uses less radiation than film.

Digestive Tract Cleansing – Fact or Fiction
What Does it REALLY MEAN to cleanse your digestive tract?
What does a well functioning digestive tract mean? It means we have no symptoms of constipation or diarrhoea, bloating, burping & belching, acid reflux, heartburn or indigestion or bad breath and have good immunity and well balanced blood sugar. Is this you? Even if you have no symptoms (the classic cast-iron stomach for example) we often find issues such as parasites, oxidative stress or leaky gut and allergies. When we do live blood analysis (hemaview) and urinary indicans testing (amount of gut dysbiosis/bad bacteria being released through the urine) these are the tests that let us know how long it’s going to take to cleanse the digestive tract – and it’s not as easy as it sounds.
I had a client once (with allergies, hayfever, reproductive issues and anxiety) who had a great looking live blood analysis when we first did the test. There was very little sign of parasites, leaky gut or liver stress. Knowing the health history, I would have expected the live blood to have looked worse. What we did was give her a detox pack which cleanses mucoid plaque from the intestinal walls. I’d have to say it’s better than colonic irrigations due to the fact that it pulls mucoid plaque (hardened oxidised bile) from the stomach, small intestines as well as the colon (large intestine). Colonic irrigations only work a maximum of 70% of the colon, whereas this is the entire digestive tract.
Once we completed the mucoid plaque cleanse (it’s simple and very effective for the mucoid plaque release for most people – but some people need to do it several times as the hardened oxidised bile can turn into ‘concrete’ in the intestines which takes some time to loosen… ) we had another look at the live blood analysis and it was totally different – we found huge signs of parasites, leaky gut and liver stress. So what happened? Basically this hardened oxidised bile/ mucoid plaque creates a barrier between the intestinal wall and inside the digestive tract and lots of nasties live behind it, it creates a heated, toxic environment which nourishes parasites, fungus and candida. So, once we released these mucoid plaques, it allowed the release of these stored parasites, fungus, candida. Then we got to work clearing the next layer for this client!
So, when practitioners either 1. don’t have the technology to show you how good/how bad things are (and therefore are doing purely guesswork) and 2. don’t have the knowledge/products/techniques in order to move through the processes (many clinics do not specialise in detoxification) or 3. believe their training that two week detoxes are all that’s needed and wonder why their clients never have the results they’re after – clients suffer. Seminars which teach detoxification often simplify things. Training in naturopathic college simplifies things. I assume it’s more popular to tell people it’ll take 2-6 weeks for a full, integrated detox, less cost, less time, simpler – but really – it’s doesn’t help clients, the industry or anyone’s health long term.
There is no health problem that exists that can’t benefit from an integrated four-filter cleanse.
Call us today to find out how your digestive tract is doing… Ask for a urinary indicans test and a live blood analysis. We can also screen (blood) for candida, coeliac disease testing and helicobacter pylori testing.
Our Foundations of Health Programme was designed for a 9 month integrated detoxification programme. We have a special offer at present where if ALL of the Foundation of Health Testing Processes are completed, as well as an initial Foundations of Health Consultation – mention this New Leaf Blog and recieve 50%off.

Are you trying to find out about celiac disease – complications to avoid and how can we live a long and healthy life with Celiac disease? Celiacs is a disease which attacks the intestinal wall when there is gluten in the diet… we find, in our natural therapies clinic, that there is much that can be done to support the main symptoms initially, and healing and creating long-term health after the symptoms have eased.
Firstly, have you been tested and found out you have celiac? Or have you suffered all of the symptoms but have been tested and found that it’s negative. Did you know that of the gluten intolerant people in Australia (of which ALL of the symptoms of celiac can be found) only around 3% are actually celiac. Up to 97% of people who have gluten intolerance have a wide variety of the symptoms. There are many false readings, even with a full small intestinal biopsy test.
Symptoms of celiac disease:
- tummy pain
- general malabsorption of our diet
- losing weight
- feeling sickly and ‘off’ a lot, nausea
- nutritional deficiencies such as iron, B12 and vitamin D
- magnesium, calcium and potassium deficiences
- constipation and/or diarrhoea (more often loose bowels)
- zinc, fibre, B vitamin deficiency
- long term: various immune system issues and much higher risk of cancers
What can be done naturally at New Leaf Natural Therapies?
- reducing stress through Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM), Kinesiology and Massage
- Healing the gut lining with FSM and nutritional supplements for gut repair
- start reversing the chronic fatigue with FSM, Kinesiology and nutritional supplements
- supporting weight gain or weight loss with better gut absorption
- allergy testing using kinesiology to determine other foods/substances causing gut issues
What tests can we do to find how ‘out of whack’ the system is, and to monitor improvement?
- Live Blood Analysis
- Helicobacter
- Candida
- Allergy Testing
- Bioimpedance analysis (finding inflammation levels – impact on gut healing)
Talk to us today and find out how we can help you!

Did you know that there’s a safe and easy way to have your child checked for allergic tendencies AND that there are things we can do to help live a healthier lifestyle? Allergies can cause so many health issues which scare the hell out of parents and caregivers: eczema and dermatitis, anaphylactic shock, swollen throats and lymphatic nodes, constant colds and flus… not to mention issues such as autism, aspergers, ADD, ADHD, asthma, which are on the rise, and very definitely linked to the messages we are sending our bodies via our foods…
No wonder we give our kids drugs to get the symptoms under control when our gut tells us it’s not doing them any favours.
There IS stuff we can do to help our kids allergies, intolerances and sensitivities:
- we use live blood analysis to find out many things including how useful the immune system is, how the liver is functioning, if the bloodstream is cleansing properly, nutritional levels of iron, b12, zinc and oxygen…
- we use kinesiology balancing techniques to pick up the body’s energy and help it heal, especially in relation to specific allergies and intolerances
- we use frequency specific microcurrent and infrared saunas to help pull toxins from the body so that it can function more effectively.
Talk to us today about the options for allergies for your children.
