How to cure diabetes naturally! Did you even know you could?

Wednesday, October 11th, 2017

Let’s think about diabetes for a moment.  By the time diabetes is found medically, often the pancreas can no longer make insulin and drugs are given – for the rest of our lives!

Of course there are genetic reasons for diabetes – but it’s amazing how many of us, perhaps knowingly, perhaps not – cause the destruction of our own pancreatic cells.  The pancreas makes at least 8 known hormones – by the time we have diabetes, doctors tell us it’s too late.  Is this true?  Do you simply trust your doctor 100% without a second thought?

I’ve been working with the health of the pancreas since 1995 and I find that assuming the cells aren’t totally dead, they can be resurrected!  But let’s look at what happens in the 5, 10, 20 years before we’re diagnosed with diabetes…  Some combination of the following will have happened, and generally we’ll turn a blind eye if it doesn’t suit our fun times and our lifestyle…

  1. putting on weight – tummy measurements over 32.5 inches for women and over 34.5 inches for men (or our BMI is over 30) increase inflammatory hormones – which in turn lowers the amount of digestive hormones released from stomach, small intestines, pancreas, liver and gall bladder.  Losing weight is challenging if a. you don’t make up your mind to do it b. you don’t find the right weight loss process and c. you don’t have the support in the background to manage the detoxification throughout the process.  We love the keto diets; shake it programmes and HCG Rapid weight loss processes.  Sometimes you can do it with just nutritional support, but not very often…
  2. are you insulin resistant?  So you haven’t as yet shown up as having diabetes but you suspect you’re on your way (and in denial perhaps?)  Do you have any of the following symptoms that you’ve been wondering if it’s linked to a pre-diabetic condition?
    • thirsty all the time?
    • wake through the night and need water?
    • sugar cravings?  poor blood sugar?
    • need carbohydrates with every meal?
    • moody if you’ve missed a meal?
    • headaches if you miss a meal?
    • alcohol cravings?
    • poor digestion?
    • fatty liver?
    • hunger?
    • memory issues – poor memory is linked to dementia which is linked to high levels of insulin destroying the extremities (the brain)
    • fatigue?
    • blurred vision
  3. stress – stress is known to inhibit digestive hormones as well.  Do you sweep your stress under the carpet?  Or do you do anything about it?  We support stress with kinesiology, acupuncture, nutritional and herbal medications – we support lifestyle choices such as lowering alcohol levels; yoga; eating a healthy diet; stretching; exercise and pilates… What is your greatest de-stressor!!
  4. diet – there is so much misinformation out there in relation to diet and mostly doctors and dieticians support high carbohydrate diets, with plenty of servings of grain daily.  This is ludicrous given the masses of information out there about how an imbalance of carbohydrates in the diet exhaust the pancreas.  It makes me so cranky!  In order to reverse pancreatic damage you need to give it a rest!  For months!  Cut out the wheat, grains, sugars, alcohol, cereals, breads, cakes, pastries!  You can HEAL your PANCREAS!!  Eating badly is fun, but it’s still a choice to create damage in our bodies. Kinesiology can support you in finding out what foods your body is having issues with – what’s slowing down your metabolism?  Your thyroid?  Activating your adrenals?  Messing with your pancreas?
  5. pain killers – some people find one of the side effects of taking pain killing medication is that their digestive tract plays up.  As pain killers reduce inflammation (obviously what we’re after if we take them) they also accidentally shut down other inflammatory processes such as digestive functions and immune function.
  6. addictions – many of our addictions mess with our pancreas.  Alcohol.  Sugar.  2pm chocolate.  Soft drinks.  Diet soft drinks.  By ‘self-medicating’ we are often slowly poisoning our bodies (and we know it) and just keep hoping we’re going to get away with it.
  7. toxicity – toxins can bind with receptors all over the body – and inhibit the release of enzymes and hormones.  When we’ve had lots of toxicity due to chemotherapy, radiation, medications for pain, anti-biotics and vaccinations, not to mention pesticides, herbicides, genetically modified foods – OMG where does it end – any organ of the body that cops the overload of toxicity can suffer.

So…  What do we do about it?

  1. start working on improving your body composition.  We want the BMI below 25.
  2. are you a skinny fat person?  We can do a BioImpedance Screening and check out the fat mass; muscle mass and hydration levels – if we’re skinny fat our body can actually be acting as though our BMI is over 30.
  3. deal with your stress.  Find someone you trust and start dealing with it until it doesn’t hurt to deal with it anymore!
  4. own your diet, own your choices!   Start chatting to us about what foods will really start moving you in the direction towards health.
  5. improve the health of your body – find out which supplements you need!  Talk to us at New Leaf about what reverses your sugar cravings.
  6. improve the health of your stem cells so that you can repair your damaged cells?  Stem Cell Nutrition supports better health and wellbeing overall.   Only stem cells replace destroyed cells – of any type – in your body.   Check out these products at madonnaguy.cerule.com
  7. start finding ways of detoxifying and reducing your unneeded medications and addictions– this takes time, energy and effort – but if you’re fatigued and have symptoms, isn’t it time to give your body a chance to heal?
  8. get some testing done at New Leaf to find out WHAT you NEED…
    1. Chromium and vanadium are two ingredients of insulin.  If these are low in your body you CAN’T make insulin.  Our OligoScan will tell you this.
    2. Insulin resistance testing – this quick test lets us know if you’re on the way to diabetes.  The OligoScan will also let you know.
    3. Accurate BMI – find out if your body is highly inflamed?  Looking at your blood and doing a VLA BioImpedance Screening can let you know how inflamed your body is…
    4. Diabetes is considered an auto-immune condition – this means your body is inflamed, has immune issues and leaky gut, and oxidative stress.  Our testing will let you know where you’re sitting on this see-saw!  and for number 9…. this one’s up to you… what’s your big trigger!?

First Aid Kit – Colds and Viruses

Saturday, April 18th, 2015

With the colder months about to start and the year in full swing come busy days, exhaustion and for some families the inevitable colds and virus season. So what are some go to natural solutions we can keep in the cupboard/fridge and dose up on the first signs of colds? This can save valuable time and help to prevent the virus or cold from developing into something more serious like days of work and school. Here is a good all round First Aid Kit for Colds and Viruses.

  • Andrographis Complex by Mediherb or Andro NK by Metagenics (available at New Leaf Natural Therapies). When a cold is rapidly taking effect it is good to start Andrographis Complex as soon as possible. Dose: 2 tablets 3 times daily for an adult dosage. Can take every two hours for vigour viruses.
  • Zinc. Zinc is a mineral that is utilised around the body for many different reasons including skin repair, immunity, detoxification and as a catalyst for a myriad of enzymatic reactions around the body. Therefore it is in high demand especially with today’s modern lifestyle and exposure to our environment, such as car fumes, perfumes, plastics etc. Zinc is a major mineral for the immune system and usually very easy to replenish in the system. Therefore, at the first sign of a cold or a virus zinc is a good mineral to dose up on. Dose: a therapeutic dosage range is between 20-40 mg per day. However, if a virus rapidly taking hold and zinc levels are low it is generally acceptable it increase that dose by 2 or 3 times for 4 to 5 days.
  • Vitamin C. Vitamin is widely known for it’s role in immunity and for good reason. Vitamin C stabilises the immune cells and is an excellent anti-oxidant which is in need when a virus is spreading. Vitamin C works alongside zinc synergistically and therefore are often in formula’s together. For a virus taking at least 3,000 – 4,000 mg in 500 – 1000 mg increments throughout the day. For a rapidly moving virus it is recommended to take 1000 mg up to what is called bowel tolerance. Bowel tolerance is essentially how much vitamin C the bowel can absorb. If it can’t absorb any more the vitamin C will remain in the lumen of the bowel and attract water to it thus bowel movements become looser. Sometimes a lot looser. Therefore once someone has reached bowel tolerance drop the dose by 1 -2 doses the next day and stay on that until the virus has run its course.
  • Probiotics. Ultra Flora Immune by Metagenics. The immune system is produced on the other side of our digestive system. Therefore the quality of the digestive process can affect the production of the immune system. There are many different species of probiotics which all extenuate different processes and functions, some in a negative manner, some not at all and some in a positive manner. Therefore it can be tricky to figure out which probiotics are right however when coming down for a cold reach for the probiotics that help stabilise the digestion and support the immune system. It is good to have what is called a loading dose for a 3 – 7 days and then drop to a maintenance dose. This is to support the immune system to make new cells if it needs to which can take up to 7 – 10 days i.e. 2 capsules twice a day before food for a loading dose and then drop to 1 capsule twice a day for the duration of the cold. If a virus is a common occurrence it would be recommended to have a maintenance dose of 1 capsule per day for 1 – 3 month afterwards.
  • Naso Clear by Metagenics. Whenever there is any congestion especially in sinuses which are prone to infection a god sinus flush works wonders! Naso Clear is not only a antibacterial but also breaks down any films which can form that bacteria harbour in making it difficult for the immune system to search and destroy them. One to two pumps per nostril at least first thing in the morning and again before bed can work absolute wonders!
  • Herbal Throat Spray by Mediherb. Sore throats can be the entry point of many viruses and therefore good to soothe and assist in maintaining the area’s defences. Herbs helps to do just that by soothing, antibacterial/antiseptic actions and helps support lymphatic drainage so the immune system can reach the area and carry away the
    • We’ve all heard of gargles, but who has time to gargle during a busy day? So a spray can be very convenient!
  • Homeopathics. Homeopathics can work really well for the sensitive people, easy to take and gentle on the pocket! BioResearch Formula 5 is a good immune supporter especially with re-occuring sore throats, colds and flu’s. For infections which have gone into secondary infections Formula C or Formula CR for chest coughs. Homeopathics should be taken 10-15minute away from strong flavours such as toothpaste, breathmints or even strong coffee.
  • Cells need weekends too! In a word recuperation and convalescents. If it is the beginning of a cold a warm easy to digest meal such as soup or casserole is great. These meals often need time to cook thus the food is already starting to break down and less work for the digestion to do. Rug up, get comfortable and enjoy some cosiness for the evening.. down time is a the path the new convalescence.

If a course of antibiotics is needed these products will be fine with these. If any other medications are prescribed and you have concerns it is best to take the Andrographis Complex 2 hours apart to avoid interactions or call the girls on 3348 6098 to see if we can help you with your health concerns.

Chronic Fatigue, Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Depression, Chronic Pain Conditions – there is help!

Wednesday, August 20th, 2014

What may all of these conditions have in common?  Chronic Fatigue, Depression, Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Chronic Pain Conditions are all linked to:

  1. Old infections that haven’t been fully resolved.  The ‘particles’ and ‘byproducts’ of these old infections, staph or strep, e-coli, glandular fever EBV etc etc, live in the tissues in the body and do not show up in regular blood tests.  It is estimated by some researchers that up to 80% of infections live in the biofilm, hidden deep inside the tissues in the body, and create a low-grade inflammation that is hard to shift medically. Depression is an inflammatory process – we simply can’t have depression without brain inflammation – there’s such a huge gut-brain connection that current research is looking at infections crossing the blood-brain barrier and being one of the many causes of depression.  Herbal tonics, nutritionals, chi nei tsang abdominal massage and kinesiology all help the body to break down the biofilm, recognise the infections, and start eliminating these toxins.
  2. Poor nutritional status:  recommended daily allowances of nutrients are ridiculously low (and totally useless) when we have a chronic health condition – of any sort.  Studies done in the 1970’s with Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia showed (40 years ago) that all nutritional needs were higher once we’re stressed, in pain, not sleeping, working too hard, bed-ridden.  So a multi-vitamin or thinking we’re going to get the nutrition from our foods was disproven decades ago.
  3. When we’re unwell, our body goes into ‘crisis mode’.  That is, it starts running survival patterns which override normal day to day activities – digestion, blood pressure, lung activity, muscular function – this is why a cold or flu, or small car accident, or death in the family – can trigger a weird group of symptoms that often aren’t put together as being linked to the initial incident or episode.  We start to put together these parts of your history, so that the medical conditions that have occurred finally make sense.

We specialise in supporting people with chronic health conditions – nutritionally giving the cells what they need, structural balancing to take the pressure of the body, survival pattern kinesiology to allow the body to start healing… and much more.  Our Foundations of Health programme, particularly (which takes 9-18 months), is designed to work through cleansing the major filters of the body – the gut & digestion, the liver, the kidneys and immune systems – which slowly but surely allows all of the individual cells of the body to have better nutritional status, improves detoxification and improves health.

When Iron Deficiency just Continues and doesn’t improve…

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012
Keep coming up iron deficient in blood tests – but not much else?? Feel like you’re always trying to boost the levels but as soon as you stop taking the supplements the levels drop again? Here are a bunch of ideas for you:

* if iron deficiency shows up in normal blood tests – you’re within the worst 10% levels in QLD – not happy jan!
* if iron deficiency shows up in live blood screenings at New Leaf – we can find other reasons for the iron deficiency (gut, liver, oxidative stress)
* iron is challenging to absorb from food – we need heaps of ‘good’ gut acid (HCL) in the stomach and only absorb it in 8 inches of the small intestines
* if we are stressed or inflamed we don’t absorb our iron
* if we are ‘mucussy’ people – sinuses, bloating, asthmatic – mucus through these areas can block the absorption of iron through the intestines
* if we have heavy metal toxicity through the gut – stomach or small intestines we can block the absorption of iron
* if our bone marrow is dysfunctional – we can’t release new red blood cells correctly/perfectly – and they will be too small (iron deficient) – this not only impacts on energy, but the ability to absorb many other nutrients such as B12, folate, oxygen, zinc, essential fatty acids – no wonder we get so tired!
* it takes a minimum of 4 months to rebuild iron levels if we are deficient (as seen in live blood screenings) as we can’t change the size of the red blood cells that are in your bloodstream – it’s as the new cells come through from the bone marrow with the correct nutrition they start to change size and shape. It takes time and energy!

Favourite iron supplements: Hemagenics Vegiecare (available at New Leaf): contains a fantastic form of bioavailable iron (most do nothing), along with a chunky dose of B12 and folate;
Dose: extremely deficient: 1, three x daily
Dose: moderately deficient: 1, twice daily
Dose: tired, deficient, not too bad – 1 daily

If gut issues: G-Tox (available at New Leaf): 1 scoop daily to help absorption of iron.
