Remedial Massage notes from the desk of Cherice Day and Katherine Lynn.
Massage therapy is an art. It’s a skill and it needs to be a passion. Good remedial massage therapists meet a client and create a plan of attack in order to solve a physical problem; frozen shoulder; knee issues; back or neck or shoulder pain – whatever the problem, it needs skilled hands to sort it out.
Clients often come in thinking that an issue will be sorted out in one session. Then it comes down to what has caused the problem in the first place as to how long it takes to fix.
What causes chronic pain?
- muscles being too acidic (therefore you probably need a high quality magnesium such as fibroplex powder) from lactic acid;
- muscles being too dehydrated (most Aussies don’t drink enough water!) Coffee, tea, soft drinks, white sugar and flour products all dehydrate our bodies;
- structural problems: sitting badly, sleeping badly, exercising badly, not stretching, not being able to relax, nutritional deficiencies…
- immune activation within muscles such as fibromyalgia (the immune system attacks the muscle fibres); auto-immunity in problems such as Rheumatoid Arthritis
These reasons give us an idea why 1 massage isn’t always the only answer. Cherice & Katherine will put together a plan of attack so that you can start healing from the inside out. If there’s more of a health picture that needs naturopathic attention, you will be referred to Madonna Guy ND or Jacqueline Dekoke ND.
Yours in health
Cherice & Katherine

Today Alex and I discussed chronic pain with a few callers.. A few thoughts on pain:
1 in 5 Australians have chronic pain at some stage in their lives, so pain management is a huge challenge for many health professionals. Pain can come from so many sources, and is often linked to emotional pain and traumas in our lives: deaths of a loved one, an operation, a nasty viral infection, financial difficulties. Neck and shoulder pain, for example, is notoriously worse when someone is stressed. Eventually this can lead to chronic pain for which medical science has no answers for other than stronger and stronger drug therapies.
Natural pain management works to reduce irritation to the nerves; regenerate the areas which are degenerating and re-mineralise the body. This combination helps to reduce acidity, reduce pain and increase longevity. Drug pain management suppresses the symptoms allowing nerve damage, acidity and degeneration to continue.
New Leaf Natural Therapies has many treatments for pain management: naturopathic supplements; frequency specific microcurrent; remedial massage; infrared saunas; structural kinesiology and acupuncture. It’s time to get to the cause of health problems, not just suppress them!

One of the most common conditions we see in people over 40 is gut pain… reflux, heartburn and acid problems are huge. Unfortunately it means that many of them are taking drugs which settle down the reflux or heartburn, but also have many unfortunate ’side effects’. Not side effects in the usual sense of the word, but consequences of long-term health.
- Somac, nexium & losec (& other similar meds) stop the acid which causes reflux, heartburn & indigestion. It also stops the ‘good acid’ released from the parietal cells which help to digest proteins.
- This means that long term our body has a hard time building muscle mass. This leads to tiredness and lethargy since our thyroid hormones are converted in the muscle mass and our muscle cells give us the largest amount of energy of any cells in our body. If we have low muscle mass, we struggle getting plenty of energy.
- It takes some time to get the gut working well. There are three stages to the process of getting the gut working well:
- symptomatic relief: settle the acid reflux and indigestion with supplements that ‘quench’ the acid without shutting down the parietal cells long term.
- heal the gut lining: most of the time with acid reflux and indigestion there is a ‘leaky gut’ or tiny ulcerations even if the ‘endoscopy’ says everything is okay. This means that if we give supplements that help to digest proteins it increases ‘good acid’ which will cause pain, so we need to heal the gut lining BEFORE giving supplements to help the actual digestion; and
- get the digestion working properly. We use enzymes and supplements which help the digestion of the gut, getting the parietal cells working correctly and starting the process of having the food we eat broken down again.
By the time we have indigestion, reflux & heartburn our gut hasn’t been working for quite some time. It doesn’t happen overnight, and it takes some time to correct. Doctors don’t mention to us that there is ‘good acid’ and ‘bad acid’. Many practitioners don’t see the link, and therefore don’t get good results with gut issues.
Take time to get your gut right. It takes time, but it’s worth it! Gut issues cause chronic disease: cancer; diabetes; depression; food sensitivities; immune problems; allergies and chronic pain.

We really hit an interesting discussion this week on 4BC (1116) & BayFM (100.3) when we started discussing natural pain options, and we started talking about how long anesthetics stay in our bodies. We had several callers who have never recovered since having anesthetics for one problem or another.
We use Frequency Specific Microcurrent and clinical nutrition in order to remove anesthetics from the body. It can take several sessions and months (or years for some very toxic people) of supplements to remove anesthetics from the body.
Side-effects of anesthetics include liver and gut dysfunction; exhaustion; muscle aches and pains; numbness and neuropathies; headaches and lots more. If you feel that you may fit into this category, give us a call and we’ll talk to you about how we go about removing these substances from your body!

Frequency Specific Microcurrent, as used by therapists Madonna Guy ND & Jacqueline Dekoke ND, is a technology which utilises specific frequencies to target particular areas of the body. It can be used to break down calcification of joints, inflammation of scar tissue and also heal areas which are weakened: weak tendons & ligaments; discs in the spine; fractured bones etc.
You may have heard of TENS machines, as used by physios – these target muscles, making them relax & contract. The Frequency Specific Microcurrent equipment has the ability to to target a hundred different body parts… There are processes for new injuries, old injuries, removal of toxins and anesthetics, removal of chemotherapy and radiation toxins after cancer therapy (even years later these toxins lurk in the tissues of the body), they stay in the system and degenerate joints and bones, creating many health issues.
When New Leaf Natural Therapies runs an FSM treatment on a client, say for pain relief, our preference is to use 2 machines simultaneously. This way we can use an automated programme on one machine for a particular pain protocol, and target specific areas on the body on the 2nd machine, thereby doubling the benefits and fewer treatments are necessary to heal the area. It is said that an hour on the FSM equipment is equivalent to about 5 hours of massage therapy.
Getting the most out of an FSM treatment: the body should be hydrated. Clients should drink plenty of water before, during and after a treatment. Lots of acids are released from the body throughout a session of FSM. We also recommend natural anti-inflammatory supplements throughout the process so that the body heals faster and treatments are longer lasting.
This treatment can be used for any pain relief: fibromyalgia; chronic spinal pain, disc pain, muscular aches and pains; frozen shoulder; new injuries or old. Give us a call and see if we can help you!

You can have Pain Relief without drugs at New Leaf Natural Therapies. Our lovely clinic in Wynnum provides a range of services: if you live elsewhere here are some ideas for you to look for when finding a clinic to take care of your pain – you too, can have pain relief without drugs, pain relief without medication!
Find the reasons for your pain and FIX THEM! What? There are reasons for my pain? Find a clinic that can do some scientific testing/treatments in order to achieve the following outcomes…
- How acidic are you? Knowing this number (both saliva and urinary) and working towards the optimal ph (7.2-7.35) will halt the destruction of joints, bones and organs. Acidity creates an environment where just about every health problem can be created. Jacqueline Dekoke ND recently had a client with massive health issues and got his acidity from 5.5 to 7.4 within 4 weeks. Then the healing can begin!
- How much excess fluid is your body holding? Our VLA or Bio-impedance analysis machine let’s us know EXACTLY how much fluid is inside the cells and how much fluid is on the outside. This also let’s us know how much excess fluid your body is holding. WHY? Because the body is clever, and it’s trying to dilute toxins, acidity and inflammation. We find that this process takes some time: we have trillions of cells in our body and to detoxify each one, takes a lot of time!
- Massage therapies: Find yourself a fabulous massage therapist, like Ms Katherine Lynn or Ms Cherice Day, someone who can put together a treatment plan for you. If your massage therapist has a plan – then work with them and trust them. If it doesn’t feel like they’re helping you with your pain relief, then find someone else. For example, with Alison’s combination of reflexology, remedial massage, shiatsu, lymphatic drainage and acupuncture, she’s a perfect choice – find a passionate massage therapist who’ll get your pain issues under control.
- How inflamed are you? We use several testing processes to find out how inflamed you are: Live Blood Analysis (signs such as fibrin, rouleaux, blood stickiness, protoplasts, red crystals…); bio-impedance analysis (let’s us know how leaky and stressed your cells are). Once you know how inflamed your body is you can use natural anti-inflammatories with NO SIDE EFFECTS such as kinex AI, kaprex and inflavonoid intensive care. We also use Frequency Specific Microcurrent for reducing inflammation and regeneration of joints, ligaments and tendons.
It’s time to find your own natural therapies clinic that can do that for you!

Key highlights of November’s Pain Seminar at New Leaf Natural Therapies were interesting… Attendees were from different walks of life, with varying levels of pain and inflammatory conditions: gut pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, exhaustion, rheumatoid arthritis, menstrual pain, insomnia, depression…
When you put it all together pain, regardless of the type, comes from the same causes which were discussed:
- chronic nutritional deficiences such as magnesium, calcium, potassium and B vitamins
- inflammation
- acidity
- toxicity
- structural imbalances and
- stress… leading to the fight and flight response
Our tests can measure these problems and then our naturopathic processes can start to reverse these problems in the body.
