Best ways to prevent breast cancer: new research! Madonna Guy Naturopath, Wynnum, Brisbane

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010
The right diet of anti-angiogenic foods may be our best weapon in preventing cancer.
Did you know that up to 40 percent of women ages 40 to 50 may have tiny cancers in their breasts—no larger than the tip of a ballpoint pen? Microscopic tumors are forming all the time, but our body’s natural cancer-fighting system usually prevents them from growing large enough to cause harm. A key component of this system is angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels.

“Angiogenesis is what makes the difference between a small, innocuous cancer and a runaway, dangerous disease,” says William Li, MD, president and medical director of the Angiogenesis Foundation. Already about a dozen drugs battle cancer by keeping blood vessel growth in check (with the usual problems of lots of side-effects), but Li is even more excited by research that shows that adding certain foods to our diet can have a similar effect.

Many of the foods that contain angiogenesis-inhibiting compounds are also rich in antioxidants, which may contribute to their anticancer benefits. But as Li explains, “The jury is still out on whether antioxidants are truly effective at preventing cancer, yet controlling blood vessel growth has been proven to make a profound difference.” Initial study results are startling: Asian-American women who ate soy at least once a week throughout their lives reduced their risk of breast cancer by 60 percent; Chinese women who drank a cup of green tea at least three times a week cut their colon cancer risk by 34 percent. Other natural antiangiogenic foods include red wine, cooked tomatoes, blueberries, garlic, and dark chocolate.

According to Li, future research will focus on which specific varieties of foods are most potent. “We may one day soon be able to pinpoint the exact species of tomato or type of red wine that offers the biggest bang for your buck when it comes to discouraging tumor growth,” he says. “Doctors will truly be able to recommend foods to fight cancer and know they’re having a meaningful effect.”

Feeling Tired All The Time: 1st sign of chronic disease!

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Feeling tired all the time? Exhausted?  Burnt out? Did you know that it’s not just a symptom – it’s a sign that some crucial bodily functions aren’t working properly!  Medical tests just don’t find anything MOST of the time, but if you’re sick of feeling zonked, then read on!!

How long since you woke up feeling energised??  Have you been feeling  tired all the time? Exhausted from the moment you get up, unless you use stimulants – sugar, coffee & tea, cigarettes, stress…  Needing these stimulants is a sign that your cells aren’t functioning properly.  Medically, nothing can be done until a disease is present, but trust me, you DON’T want to wait until you’re a medical mess.

Here’s a 7 part process to more energy!  Talk to us today and get your journey started!

  1. Have a cellular analysis (VLA) and find out how much energy your cells are giving you.  Your Active Tissue Mass (muscle) is what feeds your energy cycle.  With low quality muscle mass and low amounts of muscle mass, your cells ARE NOT GIVING YOU ENERGY!  Work on improving your muscle mass!
  2. Have a look at your cells with Live Blood Analysis: there are 2 types of anaemia we see regularly – Iron deficiency and B12/folate deficiency.  We regularly find both types of anaemia in Live Blood Analysis with Chronically Tired People.
  3. How acidic are you? We do urine tests which let us know if you are acidic – if your body has a ph (acidity) of 6.5 or lower (more acidic) than the body is working harder than it needs to:  it has a harder time hydrating your cells, detoxifying your cells, removing inflammation, killing bacteria, viruses, helicobacter, parasites and more.
  4. Remove inflammation: With live blood analysis and cellular analysis we know how inflamed you are, this gives us a starting point.  We use infrared saunas, natural  supplements, massage therapies, frequency specific microcurrent, structural kinesiology to reduce inflammation.
  5. huge doses of fish oils that are heavy metal free.  Now, this sounds easier than it is, since nearly every supplement claims to be free of toxins.  However, did you know the government rules on toxicity are a joke?  We only recommend Metagenics fish oils and 100% of their range is completely non-toxic, whereas most ranges are very dodgy.  You then need a therapeutic dose of the fish oils to reduce inflammation and allow the cells to function a little better!
  6. Removing anesthetics: even dental work can impact on energy levels, having moles removed, veins stripped.  Tiny amounts of anesthetics can attach to nerve membranes and stop them from being functional, hindering the nerve conduction in the body.  We use B12 (at least 2000mg daily); infrared saunas and frequency specific microcurrent to pull anesthetics out of your body.
  7. Detoxify!  Our Foundations of Health Programme is a 9 month programme which works through the body’s filters 1 by 1 and cleanses them.  Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is linked to all of the filters being clogged, hindering nerve and cellular conduction.  We work through balancing the ph (acidity) as well as cleansing the gut (candida, parasites, helicobacter, fungus, leaky gut, allergens); the liver; the immune system and the kidneys.

So don’t despair, if you’re feeling really tired, you need to start at the beginning and treat the symptoms initially, and then cleanse, cleanse, cleanse!  Slowly but surely, you’ll get better and better.  Start your journey today – call Gabby or Helen on 3348 6098!

Stem Enhance & Natural Cellular Defence for Multiple Sclerosis & Parkinsons Disease

Is your life, or the life of a loved one, hampered by chronic auto-immune conditions?

At New Leaf Natural Therapies we have had great success with auto-immune diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis.  Hope truly is out there if you have these, or other auto-immune disorders such as fibromyalgia, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, hashimotos & Graves Disease and much more.  Our practitioners and team have a combined 60 years experience within the natural therapies industry, and plenty of experience with auto-immune diseases.

Interestingly, the experience our practitioners and I have had as newer, stronger and more effective supplementation is much available, has been even better.  We utilise detoxification products (auto-immune conditions are heavily linked with heavy metal toxicity) and products which increase the production of stem cells, products which balance the immune system (as auto-immunity is like having an ADHD immune system – overworking to attack specific cells in the body).

We provide the following tests for people with chronic auto-immune disease:

  1. live blood analysis: looking at immunity, anti-oxidant levels, invisible toxicity, sluggish or overactive immunity, essential fatty acid levels and more;
  2. acidity levels – the more acidic the body is the more risk of chronic disease, the more minerals are ‘pulled’ from the bones, nerves, muscles and brain;
  3. reasons for auto-immunity – gut issues such as leaky gut, helicobacter, candida, celiac disease, insulin resistance.  All of these conditions increase inflammation and toxicity levels in the gut, and the gut is home to over 70% of the immune system;
  4. BMI, fat mass & muscle mass readings with Cellular Analysis: if the BMI (body mass index) is over 30 then inflammation continues unabated in the body regardless of the amount of anti-inflammatories (natural or drug) are being taken, so working on the BMI is imperative.

So the treatment involves working on inflammation and acidity, the immune system, weight issues, toxicity levels, gut and liver health. Wow, can it be done???  It sure can, ask about our payment plans for saving you money on our programmes today!

Madonna on the Radio: 4BC with Alex Bernard

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Today Alex and I discussed chronic pain with a few callers..  A few thoughts on pain:

1 in 5 Australians have chronic pain at some stage in their lives, so pain management is a huge challenge for many health professionals.  Pain can come from so many sources, and is often linked to emotional pain and traumas in our lives: deaths of a loved one, an operation, a nasty viral infection, financial difficulties.  Neck and shoulder pain, for example, is notoriously worse when someone is stressed.  Eventually this can lead to chronic pain for which medical science has no answers for other than stronger and stronger drug therapies.

Natural pain management works to reduce irritation to the nerves; regenerate the areas which are degenerating and re-mineralise the body.  This combination helps to reduce acidity, reduce pain and increase longevity.  Drug pain management suppresses the symptoms allowing nerve damage, acidity and degeneration to continue.

New Leaf Natural Therapies has many treatments for pain management:  naturopathic supplements; frequency specific microcurrent; remedial massage; infrared saunas; structural kinesiology and acupuncture.  It’s time to get to the cause of health problems, not just suppress them!

Tummy Pain…Reflux, Heartburn & Acid Problems

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

One of the most common conditions we see in people over 40 is gut pain…  reflux, heartburn and acid problems are huge.  Unfortunately it means that many of them are taking drugs which settle down the reflux or heartburn, but also have many unfortunate ’side effects’.  Not side effects in the usual sense of the word, but consequences of long-term health.

  • Somac, nexium & losec (& other similar meds) stop the acid which causes reflux, heartburn & indigestion.  It also stops the ‘good acid’ released from the parietal cells which help to digest proteins.
  • This means that long term our body has a hard time building muscle mass.  This leads to tiredness and lethargy since our thyroid hormones are converted in the muscle mass and our muscle cells give us the largest amount of energy of any cells in our body.  If we have low muscle mass, we struggle getting plenty of energy.
  • It takes some time to get the gut working well.  There are three stages to the process of getting the gut working well:
  1. symptomatic relief: settle the acid reflux and indigestion with supplements that ‘quench’ the acid without shutting down the parietal cells long term.
  2. heal the gut lining: most of the time with acid reflux and indigestion there is a ‘leaky gut’ or tiny ulcerations even if the ‘endoscopy’ says everything is okay.  This means that if we give supplements that help to digest proteins it increases ‘good acid’ which will cause pain, so we need to heal the gut lining BEFORE giving supplements to help the actual digestion; and
  3. get the digestion working properly. We use enzymes and supplements which help the digestion of the gut, getting the parietal cells working correctly and starting the process of having the food we eat broken down again.

By the time we have indigestion, reflux & heartburn our gut hasn’t been working for quite some time.  It doesn’t happen overnight, and it takes some time to correct.  Doctors don’t mention to us that there is ‘good acid’ and ‘bad acid’. Many practitioners don’t see the link, and therefore don’t get good results with gut issues.

Take time to get your gut right.  It takes time, but it’s worth it!  Gut issues cause chronic disease:  cancer; diabetes; depression; food sensitivities; immune problems; allergies and chronic pain.
