Remedial Massage; Reflexology; Chi Nei Tsang; Aromatherapy; Deep Tissue; Sports Massage – at New Leaf :-)

Tuesday, March 8th, 2016

Are you aware of the types of massage we do, the benefits and why we keep offering it for your health problems?

Massage is perhaps one of the oldest healing traditions. Many cultures – including the Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Chinese and Indians – were convinced of the therapeutic properties of massage and used it to treat a variety of ailments.

Massage is the application of manual techniques to the soft tissue to mobilise them to maintain flexibility. Massage is especially effective in breaking compensatory pain postures and patterns. For example, a tension headache is often self-sustaining because the pain makes the person clench the affected muscles even harder, which, in turn, creates more pain. A thorough neck and shoulder massage can reduce muscle tension and break the pain cycle.

Massage for treatment of some disorders

Modern studies have shown that massage can be used to successfully treat a variety of disorders, including:

  • anxiety
  • arthritis
  • back or neck pain
  • soft tissue injuries
  • chronic pain
  • constipation
  • depression
  • headache
  • high blood pressure
  • insomnia.

Benefits of massage

One of the immediate benefits of massage is a feeling of deep relaxation and calm. This occurs because massage prompts the release of endorphins, the brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) that produce feelings of wellbeing. Levels of stress hormones, such as adrenalin, cortisol and norepinephrine, are also reduced. Studies indicate that high levels of stress hormones impair the immune system.

Some of the physical benefits of massage include:

  • reduced muscle tension
  • improved circulation
  • stimulation of the lymphatic system
  • reduction of stress hormones
  • increased joint mobility and flexibility
  • improved skin tone
  • speedier healing of soft tissue injuries
  • heightened mental alertness
  • reduced anxiety and depression.

Different types of massage

Typically, the massage practitioner uses either oil or talcum powder to allow their hands to slip over the person’s skin. Sometimes, a sheet or thin piece of cloth might be used for the same effect.

The different types of massage may include:

  • Aromatherapy – essential oils made from selected flowers and plants are added to the massage oil for their particular therapeutic properties. For example, the scent of sandalwood is thought to reduce nervous tension.
  • Baby massage – can help to treat constipation, colic and sleeping problems. Studies have found that regular massage helps premature babies to gain weight at a faster rate.
  • Reflexology – massage of the feet can encourage healing in other parts of the body.
  • Therapeutic – also known as ‘Western’ or ‘Swedish’ massage. One of the most popular forms of massage in Australia, this technique is designed to promote relaxation and improve blood circulation.
  • Remedial – encourages healing of injured soft tissue, such as muscles, tendons and ligaments.
  • Hot Stone Massage – is a relaxing technique that uses the heat from the stones to penetrate into the muscle tissues
  • Sports – is a blend of techniques that aim to enhance performance and help overworked muscles to recover quickly.
  • Chi Nei Tsang – an abdominal massage process (45-60 minutes on the abdomen) which improves circulation to the abdominal organs, intestines, reproductive organs, muscles and tendons inside the pelvic cavity and lower back.

Special considerations

There are some instances where massage isn’t recommended, including:

  • during pregnancy, especially the first trimester
  • if skin rashes, cuts or infections are present
  • if fractures or broken bones are suspected.

Chi Nei Tsang

Have you heard about Chi Nei Tsang?  This abdominal massage which has its origins in Thailand, has been used for hundreds of years.  Imagine your core abdominal muscles and organs working well.  Our experienced massage therapists have been working with Abdominal Massage for more than 3 years – it’s amazing for:

  • immune issues – 80-90% of immunity is in the gut
  • abdominal issues and lower back pain
  • liver and gall bladder dysfunction
  • fertility issues – endometriosis, painful periods, PCOD, prostate issues
  • anxiety & stress – releasing scar tissue from the diaphragm
  • lymphatic congestion – the abdomen is indeed ‘the core’ of health

Your next Chi Nei Tsang Treatment is only $89!

Looking at your Blood –  is a process where we need 1-2 drops of blood – you see your blood on a monitor for 20-40 minutes and shows the healthy and vitality of your red blood cells and white blood cells – the ones that fight cold, flu, viruses – the ones that are anti-allergic, the ones that are inflammatory.

It’s a cool way of checking out your cellular health, and give you inspiration to keep it that way.

Your next 1 hour where we look at your blood on the screen with Georgia is only $169 or $199 with Madonna – if you mention Monkey Chimp Email!

Reflexology

I’m constantly impressed by the feedback I get from clients with regards to Carole’s reflexology treatments.  Reflexology improves the health of all your body’s organs – your spleen, your immunity, your gut and liver – your metabolism / thyroid / adrenal system.

Your next Reflexology Treatment is only $89!

OligoScan. Yes, I know, I keep mentioning it, but I really, really love it!  Just say we see via the OligoScan that your selenium and zinc are low and you constantly get the flu… well these nutrients are crucial for immunity.
We often find low iodine, low magnesium (also linked to exhaustion and thyroid issues) linked to chronic weight issues.  Not to mention high heavy metal levels in those who can’t lose weight.  The body will often refuse to lose weight if it’s toxic – it’s trying to protect you, but very annoying when you’re doing everything right.  Detoxing can be necessary.

Your next OligoScan / Consult Combo with Georgia or Madonna is only $299!

Stress Anxiety and Depression – a common phenomenon for familys – parents, kids, step families….

Tuesday, August 11th, 2015

New Leaf Natural TherapiesParents and kids these days are incredibly susceptibly to stress, anxiety and depression – trying to avoid medication seems to be a common society problem.  But what is the answer?  Small business owners have a constant barrage of stressors – but let’s think about what really starts it all…  If you’re taking medications and would like to chat about how to start the process of going natural, book an apt to discuss the possibilities…

  • Fatigue.  It’s easy to get depression and fatigue mixed up.  Let’s face it – when we’re working hard, relaxing at the end of the day feels not only important, but the only way to re-boot our energy systems.  Depression switches off our motivation and energy hormones.  There are natural supplements that help your adrenals and mitochondria regenerate:  Adrenotone; Adaptan; MitoActivate; Thyrobalance… to name a few.  An OligoScan is a great way to find out how well your metabolism, your stress, your nerves are doing…
  • Sleeping too much or not enough.  Hormones linked to stress and depression (and sleeping too much or too much) are the same.  We need serotonin (our feel happy hormone) to convert to melatonin to help us sleep.  So a deficiency can affect our going-to-sleep and waking-up and being-happy hormones.  Supplements such as Proxan, Stressan and Calm X are some of our favourite serotonin supplements.
  • Diet – dodgy diet – inflamed brain.  Healthy diet – healthy brain.  There’s a massive gut-brain connection – you can’t eat crap and expect to think happy thoughts.  Ask about our  IgG Food Detective with your next apt to find out if your foods are messing with your brain!
  • Chronic pain, stomach ache and backache – these can go hand in hand with depression.  Feel-good-hormones such as serotonin are anti-inflammatory, and pain hormones shut down our feel-good-hormones.  It’s hard to feel happy when you’re in pain!  And drugs DON’T fix the feel-good-hormones.  Probiotics such as Probex for IBS, MetaFibre and Calm X for the gut lining can support the gut…  and we have many treatment options for chronic pain conditions – kinesiology, massage, microcurrent, supplements, infrared saunas & reiki.
  • Irritability – feeling frustrated with the wife, kids or boss too easily?  Stress hormones (and too much coffee and sugar!) can make us depressed and irritable and give us a shorter fuse.  Getting our hormones balanced – yeh, I know!, helps us feel like we’re happy again.  Relaxan, Resilian and Stressan are fantastic for balancing the moods – Resist X & Chromium Plus are great for balancing blood sugar.
  • Difficulty Concentrating – when we’re depressed we’re constantly thinking about the negative side of things, so it’s hard to stay on task and organised.  Brahmitone & Omega Brain Care are a few of our favourite brain combos.
  • Anger or Hostility – The Chinese call this ‘excess chi’ when we’ve got too much anger.  It tends to be linked with liver stress and there are herbs and nutrients that help to calm anger.  Stressan and Calm X are our favourites for calming our ‘excess chi’. hee hee
  • Stress – men are more likely to report stress than depression, probably because it’s more socially acceptable to do so.  The good thing about natural health is we’re more interested in getting you to feel better, than we are in ‘naming’ and ‘diagnosing’ the disease – and then coming up with an appropriate drug.  Tribulus Synergy, Calm X and Adrenotone are my favourite men’s supplements.
  • Anxiety – it’s easier to admit anxiety than depression – anxiety, once again, feels more socially acceptable – being worried, being stressed, feeling anxious about life, kids, relationships, business, job, money… the list goes on.  Anxiety is often a pre-cursor to depression.  GABA powder or capsules is ‘the anti-anxiety’ nutrient – Adaptan and Calm X are great anti-anxiety combos…
  • Substance Abuse – And here’s the kicker… how easy is it to relax and forget your stress, worry, depression – with a scotch or beer in one hand – and some hot chips in the other!  Our brain needs to feel good, unfortunately alcohol often fills that role – but the side effects (when we abuse it) are high.  Higher risk of everything – cardiac disease, cancers, gut problems, pain issues, headaches, migraines, poor libido!  which leads us to….
  • Sexual anxiety & performance issues – yep, to add insult to injury – depression doesn’t help the testosterone levels.  We need the same building blocks in the body for all hormones (feel-good hormones/stress hormones/sexual hormones) so if our body is feeling stressed, there’s little nutrition left over for making babies – and let’s face it, sex is about making babies!  For women, we have O-Lift and Tribulus Synergy – to boost oestrogen and testosterone, for men we have Tribulus Synergy and Androtone…testosterone boosters!
  • Indecision – when our body isn’t feeling good – our brain determines what’s important and what’s not!?  Bills aren’t important, deciding what to eat isn’t important – decisions become increasingly challenging and it’s harder and harder to feel motivated to et things done.  We use kinesiology, reiki and reflexology to help the brain function more effectively.
  • Suicidal Thoughts.  Okay.  Hopefully you haven’t been here, but so many people have!  When life feels overwhelming, stressful, bad enough so that worry and sadness take over, it’s hard to find a solution.  Please believe us when we say there is hope!  Our combination of nutritionals and herbals can bring people back from the brink – kinesiology and reiki can start to give you another perspective.  Reflexology & massage increase dopamine & serotonin.  One day at a time.  Breathe.  Get support and start dealing with it.  The great thing as well with kinesiology or reiki or reflexology is that you don’t NEED to talk if you don’t want to.  It works.  We’d often recommend a combination of B Complex, adrenal support, serotonin/GABA/dopamine supplements – and check toxicity levels (Live Blood or OligoScan) so that we can see if serotonin pathways are working or not!

Call us on 3348 6098 to discuss what appointment will be best for you.  Consider the OligoScan (14 years and over – hormones, stress, toxicity, minerals, heavy metals); Looking at your blood – in real time! (toxicity, gut, essential fatty acids) testing.

Hormones – Our Internal Messenger’s

Tuesday, May 19th, 2015

Hormones are the body’s messengers. They’re stimulated by feedback loops to either produce or stimulate another organ to do something or counteract something. Hormones are imperative to a functioning body. Which means that they also need to be in certain ratio’s or quantities to their counterparts. Such systems often involves the liver to break them down and detoxify them out at an efficient rate. Therefore when we talk hormone balance liver function is a big factor to include. If the liver is working hard with detoxifying lifestyle or environmental toxins then it will be harder for it to get through its daily to do list, thus impacting upon hormone levels. Some of the big hormone shifts we can help the body out with by supporting the liver are:

  • For females the big one is progesterone and oestrogen balance. Basically if there isn’t enough progesterone in ratio with oestrogen we run into a few problems which may include PMS symptoms, tender breasts, fluid retention, shortened cycle lengths, pain and cramping, anxiety and sleeplessness.
  • Oestrogen excess often has very similar symptoms but instead of not enough progesterone there is too much oestrogen thus the progesterone message can’t get through to where it needs to go. Much like a weak analogue radio station when there’s a bigger stronger signal from other radio stations on frequencies next to it.
  • Stress is a big interference! When we are stressed, whether it be physically tired and verging on exhaustion or under mental/emotional, the body responds by stimulating the adrenals to release more cortisol and/or adrenaline. This is a natural response the problem being that in today’s lifestyle we are so used running on high cortisol and adrenaline (and feeling as though that is the normal) that it can deplete the adrenals. When the adrenals are stimulated they need cholesterol to make cortisol but so does progesterone. When really stressed the cholesterol is taken away from the progesterone to make more cortisol, thus effecting the progesterone levels and altering the menstrual cycle.
  • Androgens are the hormones which control the male development and function of male characteristics however some levels are present in female too. Testosterone is an androgen.  Androgens can also be out of ratio and thus displaying symptoms such as male hair pattern growth in females and low mood and energy in males. Liver toxicity also has a role to play in androgen balance. That is if the liver is hard at work detoxying chemicals such as pesticides or bisphenol A out of the system the androgens are pushed down on the to do list and may accumulate in the system thus causing male pattern hair growth in females.
  • In males with low androgens have such symptoms of fatigue, poor concentration, low or agitated moods, low libido, loss of muscle strength and bulk. Again environmental chemical exposure and how well the liver can keep up with it has a large role to play here. Soft plastics leach chemicals which can interfere with the messages the hormones are attempting to convey (i.e. receptor sites) and therefore it is up to the liver to detox these chemicals out of the system as quickly as possible.

These are just a few examples of the interplay between systems giving just a glimpse of how intricately the body can work. Although there are many more hormone excess and deficiency scenarios these are the most common in today’s fast paced world. The take home message here: It’s well worth looking after your liver, adrenals and the messengers (hormones) for synergism between all systems… to ultimately wake up in the mornings with a feeling of wellbeing that lasts all day, no matter what the day brings.

Health issues and don’t know why? Is it leaky gut?!

New Leaf now provides Chi Nei Tsang Abdominal Massage – read on!

Chi Nei Tsang (Abdominal Massage) available at New Leaf Natural Therapies

What is Chi Nei Tsang?

Energetically – who knows the cause of sickness?  Where does internal pain, issues with our major organs such as the liver and kidneys, the stomach, small intestines, large intestines come from?  Naturopathically, it has always been taught that step one for any long-term health problem has been to cleanse the body’s filters – the digestive tract, the liver, the immune system/lymphatic systems and the kidneys.  Congestion in any of these areas can cause poor energy, poor circulation and poor detoxification of any of these systems.

In Chinese medicine it has always been taught that blocked energy starts this toxicity building up – Chi Nei Tsang helps with both – it starts to move the inflammation, the toxicity and the energy blockages that are stopping blood, lymphatic flow and nutrient absorption throughout our major organs.

Have you ever felt ‘knots’ in your stomach, tightness under the ribs, described this to your therapist who simply prescribed antacids or digestive enzymes?  These is so much more to health than that…and the last thing you want is to suppress symptoms which may come back to haunt you down the track.

Our Foundations of Health programme is a nine month detoxification process which starts the body healing as our filters start to clear.  It is a long process (quick and dirty detoxes rarely make lasting change) to health for some people.

I found this fabulous description on Chi Nei Tsang from http://radiantliving.com/chi-nei-tsang-abdominal-massage/ in the U.S. and it describes energy and the abdomen and how it relates to our health, our wellbeing, our stressors, our operations and medications…

“The Taoist sages of ancient China observed that humans often develop energy blockages in their internal organs that result in knots and tangles in their abdomens. These obstructions occur at the center of the body’s vital functions and constrict the flow of Chi (energy), our life-force. The negative emotions of fear, anger, anxiety, depression, and worry cause the most damage. Problems can also be caused by overwork, stress, accidents, surgery, drugs, toxins, poor food, and bad posture.

Through meditative practices the sages learned to look within themselves. They discovered the internal organs connect with the Five Forces of the Universe and provide a link between the human microcosm and the universal macrocosm. The organs contain the essences of the spiritual force of a human being. They also provide the physical lines of force that hold the body together and give it structure.

When obstructed the internal organs store unhealthy energies that can overflow into other bodily systems and surface as negative emotions and sickness. Always in search of an outlet, these negative emotions and toxic energies create a perpetual cycle of negativity and stress. (Fig. 1) If the negative emotions can’t find an outlet, they fester in the organs or move into the abdomen, the body’s “garbage dump.” The abdomen can process some emotional garbage, but more often it can’t keep up with the flow. The energetic center of the body located at the navel becomes congested and cut off from the rest of the body.

Fig. 1 Negative energy cycle leads to knots and tangles in the abdomen.

B. Chi Nei Tsang: A Method to Clear Blocked Energy

Chi, the life-force energy, moves through the body’s internal channels, nervous system, blood vessels, and lymph glands. These systems concentrate and cross paths in the abdomen which acts as their control center. Tensions, worries, and stresses of the day, month, or year accumulate there and are seldom dispersed. ‘These disturbances can cause physical tangling and knotting of the nerves, blood vessels, and lymph nodes. The result is the gradual obstruction of energy circulation.

The ancient Taoists realized that negative emotions cause serious damage to one’s health, impairing both physical and spiritual functions. They understood that each human emotion is an expression of energy and that certain emotions could indicate the negative energy behind many physical ailments. They also identified a specific cycle of relationships between the emotions and the organs. For example, the experience of a “knot” in one’s stomach indicated the presence of worry, the negative emotion that accumulates in the stomach and spleen.
The Taoists discovered that most maladies could be healed once the underlying toxins and negative forces were released from the body. They developed the art of Chi Nei Tsang to recycle and transform negative energies that obstruct the internal organs and cause knots in the abdomen. Chi Nei Tsang clears out the toxins, bad emotions, and excessive heat or heat deficiencies-that cause the organs to dysfunction. (Fig. 2)

C. Chi Nei Tsang: A Complement to other Disciplines”

Let’s Talk Allergies!!!

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

Aren’t allergies annoying!  They can make the best day the worst in a flash…  How do you suffer?

We treat individuals, not allergies!  But we have had success with:

  • hives, welts
  • eczema
  • dermatitis
  • acne
  • tummy pains: bloating, burping, belching, wind, flatulence, diarrhoea, cramping
  • hayfever and sinusitis
  • ADHD or hyperactivity
  • Chronic fatigue, mood swings, aches and pains from head to toe…
  • Asthma, bronchial asthma, stress
  • Depression, anxiety, panic attacks

Seems like a big list, doesn’t it?  But these are the obvious symptoms of allergy that people really understand.  But allergies can be linked to cancer, diabetes, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis, aspergers, autism, you name it, it can be affected if your body doesn’t cope with a substance…

Now medically, the AMA and TGA have decreed that natural therapies can’t treat allergies, diagnose allergies or improve allergies in any way, however we find in our clinic with a whole-body approach we get great relief from the symptoms…

Would you feel better getting through hayfever season more easily?
Would it be easier if you didn’t need to go to the toilet 10 minutes after eating spices?
What about those welts that appear every time you mow?

We look at the individual – so many things are linked to allergies:

  • the body being too acidic:  there’s a white blood cell (that we find in live blood screenings) that nature has designed to drop acid on half-digested particles that have ended up in the bloodstream.  This morning I saw a young, vital man with 21% of eosinophils in his blood (it should be less than 4%), but his only symptoms are tiredness and crankiness…  We need to find his untreated, unfound substances that are lowering his body’s energy – they’re probably not allergies, but there’s definitely something going on!!
  • poor digestion – dairy and wheat are classic – the dairy and wheat ‘particles’ are about 8 x larger than what should be released into the bloodstream – no wonder so many people have an immune response to these substances
  • toxicity – the more toxic our body is, the more overloaded our body becomes and the more dysfunctional our detox organs become.  Our detox organs are the gut, the immune system, the kidneys and liver, not to mention the skin and the lungs!

There are so many things that lead to allergies, this is why natural therapies are so good for treating the underlying CAUSES of allergies, not the allergies themselves:

  • by boosting the gut and liver function the body will be able to eliminate toxins more easily, break down foods more easily and start to regenerate and heal correctly
  • using kinesiology to reduce the stress associated with allergies. How often has someone you’ve known has an asthma attack under stress, a hyperactive outburst when the stress gets too much, or had diarrhoea when you hear bad news…
  • using live blood screenings and cellular analysis and various urine tests to find kidney function, acid levels, dodgy gut bacteria levels…

Give us a call, and start the process!!
