Body Composition and Weight Loss! Why It’s So Important!

Thursday, April 27th, 2017
We’ve specialised in weight loss processes at New Leaf for over 10 years – using several types of weight loss processes including the HCG Rapid Weight Loss programme, Shake It, Keto, Paleo… and I TRULY BELIEVE that weight loss without regular (weekly is optimal!) VLA BioImpedance Screenings is dangerous!
A few years ago I had two people in a short space of time that had both lost muscle mass and muscle quality on HCG.  This confused me until I realised that they had both decided to continue the HCG diet BEYOND the allowed 42 days maximum.  Both had done an extra 2 weeks instead of going back onto consolidation as the protocol requires.  It was really interesting to see because it highlighted that the HCG rules are really important.  Many of my clients say they could do HCG or Steak Days or Apple Days forever!
I had another client who (with another naturopath) had done 6 weeks of juice fasting and her inflammation was through the roof, her muscle mass and muscle quality was a joke.  It was scary the damage that had been done to her body.  She said ‘but I feel great’!  I said, ‘well, that’s because your body is running on sugar all day every day!’.  We had a lot of work to do to repair her body.  If juice fasting is to be done to prevent or help health problems (such as cancer) increasing inflammation during the process is not the way to go….
Another client (this was who I call my mars bar lady!) on the Shake It weight loss programme, who was continually losing about 1/2 kilo per week and had done incredibly well, turned up for her apt and said ‘I’ve been a bit naughty, I don’t expect to lose weight this week’.  We did her VLA and found:
  • weight about the same as previously
  • 2 kilos LOSS of muscle mass
  • 30% decrease in muscle quality
  • 2 kilos of combination extra fat and fluid.
  • she’d eaten 3 mars bars (on special at a service station – don’t do it!!) at a servo 2 days earlier.
  • it took 3 weeks to regain her muscle mass and muscle quality and bring her fat mass down to ‘before’ the mars bar day!
One of my ladies in yesterday had only lost 200g this week (had missed 4 doses of HCG and hadn’t had optimal diet over weekend)… but overall there had still been good changes:
  • 450g reduced normal fat
  • 500g reduced tummy fat
  • less hydrated in muscles
  • more fluid outside cells
So  don’t allow your body to fall apart while losing weight.  Talk to us about maintaining or losing weight healthily!!

In other words, there had been a kilo shift for the better, a kilo of inflammatory fluid (which needs releasing – yes!) but she wouldn’t have known without weekly VLA BioImpedance Screenings….

Weight Loss and the Paleo Diet

Hunter-gatherer societies and other less Westernized populations routinely exhibit superior health markers, body composition and physical fitness, when compared to western populations. Indeed, our hunter-gatherer ancestors were lean, healthy, fit and free of the signs and symptoms of most diseases of civilization.

The evolutionary template thus tells us that to achieve optimal health, body composition and physical fitness we should try to emulate our ancestors’ diet and lifestyle.

People who follow the Paleo Diet lose weight without counting calories, measuring portions, or going hungry. There are many reasons why this way of eating naturally leads to a lean body composition. Here are some of them:

1. The Paleo Diet is higher in protein than most Western diets. High protein diets are more effective at reducing hunger than reduced-calorie diets that people typically follow when trying to lose weight. Protein has a two to three times greater satiety value than either fat or carbohydrate, so people spontaneously eat less when they consume more protein. In fact, 3 of the 4 intervention studies with a Palaeolithic type diet have shown exactly that!

2. Protein has a higher thermic effect than carbohydrates or fat, which means it requires more energy to metabolize than the other macronutrients

3. A high-protein diet (especially one that contains high amounts of the amino acid leucine) will help you maintain your muscle mass, which is very important in terms of fat loss.

4. The second reason the Paleo Diet favors fat loss is its low glycemic load. The glycemic load is a measure of how quickly a given serving of a certain carbohydrate containing food raises blood sugar levels. By focusing on fruits and vegetables as the main carbohydrate sources, The Paleo Diet has a lower glycemic load than most cereal based diets. Hundreds of scientific studies show that high glycemic load foods cause hormonal and blood chemistry changes that increase appetite and promote fat gain.

5. The Paleo Diet has a lower omega 6/omega 3 fatty –acid ratio than most so called healthy diets. Emerging evidence suggests that omega 6 fatty acids may promote obesity and that adding omega 3 fatty acids to your weight loss program may lead to more fat reduction and less muscle loss.

So, the Paleo Diet has many advantages.  Loren Cordain has written several books on the subject discussing these and many more topics of interest to health conscious human beings…

Detox – Lemon Detox Diet: latest news!

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

I’ve been annoyed about the Lemon Detox Diet for months now.  So many people tell me they’ve tried it and I’m stunned that it sells so well.  From the naturopathic perspective, here’s what I’ve thought for ages: It has lots of sugar, there’s very little protein, so it’s going to burn muscle and gain fat.  People MIGHT have an overall weight loss but what are they doing to their body composition!!

On Channel 9’s “What’s Good For You?” a show that regularly picks on natural therapies, they were testing ‘detox diets’ to see if they worked.  The conclusion – they don’t work and that they are actually bad for you – raise triglycerides (fats in your blood), upset liver function and lots more.  However, it was the Lemon Detox Diet that they used as their example!  As usual, they didn’t have a naturopath to chat to (at New Leaf we’ve done years of research and training into detoxification processes and do it properly) and came to the conclusion that it’s bad for people.

Obviously that’s silly.  We live in the year 2009, we breathe in over 70,000 chemicals daily and nearly every single health concern is linked to toxins, acidity and inflammation: cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimers & dementia!

Our Fat-Loss Programme

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

We use a really cool system in our fat loss programme – a machine which lets us know EXACTLY what is going on with your body composition, each and every step of the way!  Your body composition is the key to longer-lasting fat-loss!  It’s simple, we want you to maintain OR ADD TO your muscle mass, and we want you to decrease fat mass and excess cellular fluid.  Our practitioners:  Madonna Guy ND, Jacqueline Dekoke ND and Linda Hoggard ND all have specific training in Bio-Impedance Analysis – which accurately measures your body composition.  Our girls also know when things are going wrong on the road to good health – have you been stressed, sabotaging yourself, given up on exercise.  Our weekly sessions keep you motivated and up and running so you get trim and stay trim long term.

The number on the scales is just a number.  Imagine this scenario: I hopped on the scales on Saturday and only weighed 200g less than the week before (bummer) – when I did the Bio-Impedance Analysis, however, I found that my fat mass had reduced by 700g and my muscle mass had increased by 500g.  So it was only a net loss of 200g.  The brain only wants the number (of course) but people get that and so much more with us!

Our fat-loss programme is designed to prevent thyroid disease, hashimotos, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and much more.  Come on in and give it a try!
