Foods Causing Inflammation and Pain: New Research!

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Are Foods Making us sick, causing us pain?!  Time to take a new look at research from around the world!

I’ve just returned from a anti-ageing & obesity congress on natural medicine, we had speakers from around the world, experts in their fields, researchers in inflammatory processes of foods (and the body), and basically we found that over 30 years, research has been done looking into prevention of many health issues:  diabetes, cancer, heart disease and auto-immune diseases… with changing the foods we eat, or negating the inflammatory effects of foods.

There are links with really specific genes interacting with certain allergenic foods – these activate our genetic ability to create disease, unfortunately at this stage there is no medical test which finds these connections, however, the  following have been found to create issues:

  1. Grains, especially wheat and gluten containing foods cause ‘leaky gut’.  Every time we eat wheat and gluten, our gut isn’t as strong as it should be and ‘food particles’ are released into the bloodstream creating inflammation.  Inflammation causes pain and disease.  Wheat and gluten are not good!
  2. Saponin and lectin containing foods also create leaky gut and inflammation.  Studies were done to find out which foods had the highest amounts of these substances: pretty much all grains contain these in differing amounts, but soy scored the highest andd rice, amaranth, wheat, barley, oats all contained these substances.
  3. Dairy milk creates insulin resistance, a pre-diabetic condition.  It is also linked to short-sightedness and acne.  Interestingly, in our clinic when we’ve improved the insulin resistance in clients, their eyesight often improves, they see things much more clearly.  So kids drinking milk, getting acne and needing glasses has now been linked to being a pre-diabetic condition.  Insulin in big amounts is very inflammatory!  At the very least pop in to our clinic and have your insulin resistance checked out!

So basically we found compelling research that the health conditions killing people these days:  cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity are very much linked to the food choices, including many ‘healthy’ choices, so once again, food needs to be individualised.

What to do?

The Paleo Diet/Mediterranean Diet/Keto Diet/Shake It Diet

These diets consistently help the body heal and repair.  They all have:

  • plenty of high quality proteins: meats, fish, eggs, low-fat hard cheeses, nuts and seeds
  • plenty of good quality vegetables (3 handfuls per meal) and fruits (best are the berries, lots of colours, only 1/2 cup per day)
  • plenty of fluids such as herbal teas, dandelion coffee, purified water
  • limited grains
  • limited dairy milk
  • limited coffee, tea and alcohol

And then we’re looking at reducing inflammation each time we eat…  For example, we could take a couple of purified fish oil capsules such at MetaPure EPA/DHA each time we eat, or some high potency gut bacteria such as Ultra Flora Immune.

So, that’s it for today,
Have a great one…

Tummy Pain…Reflux, Heartburn & Acid Problems

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

One of the most common conditions we see in people over 40 is gut pain…  reflux, heartburn and acid problems are huge.  Unfortunately it means that many of them are taking drugs which settle down the reflux or heartburn, but also have many unfortunate ’side effects’.  Not side effects in the usual sense of the word, but consequences of long-term health.

  • Somac, nexium & losec (& other similar meds) stop the acid which causes reflux, heartburn & indigestion.  It also stops the ‘good acid’ released from the parietal cells which help to digest proteins.
  • This means that long term our body has a hard time building muscle mass.  This leads to tiredness and lethargy since our thyroid hormones are converted in the muscle mass and our muscle cells give us the largest amount of energy of any cells in our body.  If we have low muscle mass, we struggle getting plenty of energy.
  • It takes some time to get the gut working well.  There are three stages to the process of getting the gut working well:
  1. symptomatic relief: settle the acid reflux and indigestion with supplements that ‘quench’ the acid without shutting down the parietal cells long term.
  2. heal the gut lining: most of the time with acid reflux and indigestion there is a ‘leaky gut’ or tiny ulcerations even if the ‘endoscopy’ says everything is okay.  This means that if we give supplements that help to digest proteins it increases ‘good acid’ which will cause pain, so we need to heal the gut lining BEFORE giving supplements to help the actual digestion; and
  3. get the digestion working properly. We use enzymes and supplements which help the digestion of the gut, getting the parietal cells working correctly and starting the process of having the food we eat broken down again.

By the time we have indigestion, reflux & heartburn our gut hasn’t been working for quite some time.  It doesn’t happen overnight, and it takes some time to correct.  Doctors don’t mention to us that there is ‘good acid’ and ‘bad acid’. Many practitioners don’t see the link, and therefore don’t get good results with gut issues.

Take time to get your gut right.  It takes time, but it’s worth it!  Gut issues cause chronic disease:  cancer; diabetes; depression; food sensitivities; immune problems; allergies and chronic pain.

Well, this week we chatted about a few cool topics:

What can we do to increase longevity (and how can we start reversing ‘genetically predisposed health problems’?)

  1. There has been very cool research in the past twelve months about genes.  And yes, they can be reversed and turned around…have you been blaming your health problems on genes and therefore been doing nothing about them?  Well, these days we can look at your blood with Live Blood Analysis and see whether or not genes have been activated.  We can tell if your body is chronically inflamed (which is also known to activate ‘bad’ genes) and also prescribe therapeutic doses of nutrients in order to start reversing these processes.
  2. Keeping your body more alkaline is one of the proven ways of protecting your genes:  plenty of filtered water and 6-7 cups of veggies every day!!!  The more acidic we are the more chronic disease we have.  Simple.
  3. Maintaining a healthy body weight:  this is the one thing that has been known for 50 years to help with longevity and wellbeing.  The higher our Body Mass Index is the more likely we are to develop heart disease, diabetes and cancer, just to name a few problems.

Take care, and see you next week!!!

Our Fat-Loss Testing Bundle…let’s you know WHY weight has been such a challenge!

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Time to get your weight issues under control!  See special offer for new clients below…

We have spent several years developing this ‘Fat-Loss Bundle’ of tests which gives our naturopaths a massive amount of information: often surpassing the information they’ve ever been given from their doctors and specialists within 30 minutes.

Have you been frustrated by going to the doctors: your thyroid’s ok, liver tests normal, cholesterol ok, BP fine and you’re sent away, yet again, with the message of ‘eat less, exercise more’.  It’s a frustration we hear every single day in the clinic.

Our group of tests let us know how insulin resistant you are (huge reason for inability to lose weight); how your fat/muscle ratio is (the more out of balance this is, the slower your metabolism is…); how acidic you are (the more acidic the harder it is to lose weight); blood pressure and blood oxygen; cellular energy, not to mention these group of tests give us risk factors for diabetes, cancer, heart disease and stroke.

Both Jacqueline Dekoke ND and Madonna Guy ND have years of experience is working with these health issues and getting them under control, so that weight loss becomes a much easier process.

Special Offer:  so you’ve found your way to our website through New Leaf Natural Therapies Facebook page or ad? 4BC radio ads or Madonna’s session; internet…  For new clients who mention this special offer when they call we are offering a huge discount until 31st December, 2009.  It’s ridiculously low, but we’re so keen to help you on your weight-loss journey, we’re happy to do so.

  • Normally this group of tests is $173 and
  • an initial consultation with Jacqueline is $77 or with Madonna is $105;
  • Total up to $278.
  • For you, it will be 50% off until 31st December; maximum of $139…

Detox – Lemon Detox Diet: latest news!

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

I’ve been annoyed about the Lemon Detox Diet for months now.  So many people tell me they’ve tried it and I’m stunned that it sells so well.  From the naturopathic perspective, here’s what I’ve thought for ages: It has lots of sugar, there’s very little protein, so it’s going to burn muscle and gain fat.  People MIGHT have an overall weight loss but what are they doing to their body composition!!

On Channel 9’s “What’s Good For You?” a show that regularly picks on natural therapies, they were testing ‘detox diets’ to see if they worked.  The conclusion – they don’t work and that they are actually bad for you – raise triglycerides (fats in your blood), upset liver function and lots more.  However, it was the Lemon Detox Diet that they used as their example!  As usual, they didn’t have a naturopath to chat to (at New Leaf we’ve done years of research and training into detoxification processes and do it properly) and came to the conclusion that it’s bad for people.

Obviously that’s silly.  We live in the year 2009, we breathe in over 70,000 chemicals daily and nearly every single health concern is linked to toxins, acidity and inflammation: cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimers & dementia!
