What Do We Do?

Naturopathy is a system of healing that aims to provide holistic or whole body healthcare by drawing on treatment methods from several traditional systems of medicine. Naturopathy seeks to use the natural healing powers of the body to cure itself. It focuses on treating the cause of a disease rather than the symptoms themselves. In the past naturopathy was described as an alternative medicine; however there has been such a massive amount of scientific research in the past 20 years that it is much more mainstream these days.

Good health and wellness is what naturopathic treatment is all about. The main emphasis of naturopathic practice is the belief that the body has an inbuilt ability to strive for health. The role of a naturopath is to work with a person to promote the natural healing of the body. Naturopathy is rooted in the belief that health is more than just the absence of disease and works on strengthening the body’s natural defences.

Kinesiology: We have kinesiology techniques for just about everything!  Kinesiology is a tool (like acupuncture but without the needles) that helps to find and correct imbalances in the body.  It has been developed over the last 60 years and utilises a combination of techniques – chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese philosophy such as meridians, chakras & other energies, counselling and brain neurology.

Choosing a kinesiologist at New Leaf is easy:   we all have different skills and different knowledge base to work from, and you simply book in with the practitioner that feels right for what you are going through. If you need to see someone else afterwards, we’ll let you know (your body will tell us!!!)

Norm is a very gentle kinesiologist who brings many years of massage therapy and biochemistry skills and knowledge to your treatment session.  Norm is very calm and has an ability to gently move through big issues and help to alleviate stress and pain from your life.  With the combination of NOT/kinesiology skills he can find out exactly what supplements your body needs, so that you get on track sooner!  Norm’s balances are often very energetic in nature and clients often ‘feel’ his energetic healings. Norm also uses kinesiology to perform allergy testing, allergy treatments, endocrine balances and structural balancing.

Kat has a wide variety of kinesiology skills and is continuing to add to her skill base regularly.  Her technique moves through a variety of nutritional balancing, energetic healings, structural balancing, emotional issues and she, like Jacq, can help you to thread together the issues from the past which are creating current health issues – emotionally and structurally. Kat is also being sought out as a kinesiology teacher – you’re in great hands with Kat.

Madonna is more structurally based than Kat & Jacq.  Madonna’s areas of specialties are NOT and LEAP.  NOT is Neural Organisational Technique, a process which helps to realign the spine, remove whiplashes and cranial injuries, rebalance the foot and ankle muscles, hips and shoulders and more.  LEAP is a learning enhancement process which is great for brain integration.  It works through a series of parts of the brain and gets them working one by one.  Both NOT and LEAP are programmes which take time to work through, but are worth the energy.  3 sessions of LEAP do more for the brain than a year of counselling!  3 sessions of NOT is worth 3 months of chiropractic!

Reflexology is a natural healing therapy, based on the principle that there are reflex points in the feet, hands and ears (the feet are most commonly the primary area of application), which correspond to every part, gland and organ of the body. The body is treated through application of pressure on these reflexes without the use of tools, crèmes or lotions. reflexology relieves tension, improves circulation and helps promote the natural function of the related areas of the body.

Reflexology is able to help with many things, such as;

Aromatherapy uses essential oils which are aimed at improving a person’s health or mood. Many consider this type of treatment as unscientific and wishful thinking – however, scientific evidence of its effectiveness is growing. The essential oils used in aromatherapy have a different composition compared to other herbal products because the distillation used in aromatherapy recovers the lighter phytomolecules.

The theory behind aromatherapy:  It is believed that the inhalation of essential oils stimulates the part of the brain connected to smell – the olfactory system; a signal is sent to the limbic system of the brain that controls emotions and retrieves learned memories. This causes chemicals to be released which make the person feel relaxed, calm, or even stimulated. If the aromatherapy includes massage the effect is to further relax the person.

Remedial massage: When muscles become knotted and tense or damaged, remedial massage provides a healing treatment that can be gentle or strong, deep or shallow. Remedial massage holistically treats the body. The massage therapist endeavours to identify the original biomechanical dysfunction, thus healing the cause of the disorder, as well as the symptoms. Remedial massage uses several specialised techniques to locate and repair damage to muscles, tendons and joints. Massage therapy supports and speeds up the body’s own repair mechanisms. A lubricating edium (usually oil) is applied directly on the skin. This ensures that the muscles associated with the disorder are deeply penetrated. Passive joint stretching moves are also used.

Hot stone massage: Hot stone massage is a fabulously relaxing massage utilising lomi lomi massage and flat hot stones used in various positions on the body in order to relax, rejuvenate and pamper!

Frequency Specific Microcurrent

Very few practices in Australia have FSM and even fewer run FSM sessions the way we do!!!  FSM is a gentle, yet effective tool, originally developed for pain relief with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.  In the 80’s disc regeneration was developed as well, and since then much research has gone in to perfecting many, many pain protocols.

The technology is similar to MRI scanning – but FSM is used for healing and not for diagnostics (great, huh???)

Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” (on or over the body) and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. Yoga classes:  are held at New Leaf Natural Therapies, currently on Monday nights at 6pm.  Our remedial yoga instructor is Sheridan Oliver, an experienced yoga practitioner with over 20 years teaching experience.  There is a maximum of 8 people per class, with plenty of one-on-one.

Remedial Massage is very different today than it was 30 years ago.  Today is becoming more and more recognised as a way of repairing muscles and tendons:  these can be damaged through many problems in daily life – the product of overuse, trauma or bad posture.

Remedial massage involves a number of applied techniques involving deep pressure, trigger points released and longitudinal strokes on shortened and tight muscles to allow proper function and restore muscle strength.

Remedial Massage Technique: It uses several specialised techniques to locate and repair damage and to support and speed up the body’s own repair mechanisms. The massage is applied directly to the skin using a lubricating medium, usually oil, which ensures that the muscles associated with the disorder and mobilisation of the joint are deeply penetrated. Passive stretching moves are also used.

Massage therapy is an art.  It’s a skill and it needs to be a passion.  Good remedial massage therapists meet a client and create a plan of attack in order to solve a physical problem; frozen shoulder; knee issues; back or neck or shoulder pain – whatever the problem, it needs skilled hands to sort it out.

Clients often come in thinking that an issue will be sorted out in one session.  Then it comes down to what has caused the problem in the first place as to how long it takes to fix.

What causes chronic pain?

• muscles being too acidic (therefore you probably need a high quality magnesium such as fibroplex powder) from lactic acid;
• muscles being too dehydrated (most Aussies don’t drink enough water!)  Coffee, tea, soft drinks, white sugar and flour products all dehydrate our bodies;
• structural problems: sitting badly, sleeping badly, exercising badly, not stretching, not being able to relax, nutritional deficiencies…
• immune activation within muscles such as fibromyalgia (the immune system attacks the muscle fibres); auto-immunity in problems such as Rheumatoid Arthritis

You may have heard of TENS machines, as used by physios – these target muscles, making them relax & contract.  The Frequency Specific Microcurrent equipment has the ability to to target a hundred different body parts…  There are processes for new injuries, old injuries, removal of toxins and anesthetics, removal of chemotherapy and radiation toxins after cancer therapy (even years later these toxins lurk in the tissues of the body), they stay in the system and degenerate joints and bones, creating many health issues.

When New Leaf Natural Therapies runs an FSM treatment on a client, say for pain relief, our preference is to use 2 machines simultaneously.  This way we can use an automated programme on one machine for a particular pain protocol, and target specific areas on the body on the 2nd machine, thereby doubling the benefits and fewer treatments are necessary to heal the area.  It is said that an hour on the FSM equipment is equivalent to about 5 hours of massage therapy.

Getting the most out of an FSM treatment:  the body should be hydrated.  Clients should drink plenty of water before, during and after a treatment.  Lots of acids are released from the body throughout a session of FSM.  We also recommend natural anti-inflammatory supplements throughout the process so that the body heals faster and treatments are longer lasting.
