Are you aware of the types of massage we do, the benefits and why we keep offering it for your health problems?

Massage is perhaps one of the oldest healing traditions. Many cultures – including the Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Chinese and Indians – were convinced of the therapeutic properties of massage and used it to treat a variety of ailments.

Massage is the application of manual techniques to the soft tissue to mobilise them to maintain flexibility. Massage is especially effective in breaking compensatory pain postures and patterns. For example, a tension headache is often self-sustaining because the pain makes the person clench the affected muscles even harder, which, in turn, creates more pain. A thorough neck and shoulder massage can reduce muscle tension and break the pain cycle.

Massage for treatment of some disorders

Modern studies have shown that massage can be used to successfully treat a variety of disorders, including:

  • anxiety
  • arthritis
  • back or neck pain
  • soft tissue injuries
  • chronic pain
  • constipation
  • depression
  • headache
  • high blood pressure
  • insomnia.

Benefits of massage

One of the immediate benefits of massage is a feeling of deep relaxation and calm. This occurs because massage prompts the release of endorphins, the brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) that produce feelings of wellbeing. Levels of stress hormones, such as adrenalin, cortisol and norepinephrine, are also reduced. Studies indicate that high levels of stress hormones impair the immune system.

Some of the physical benefits of massage include:

  • reduced muscle tension
  • improved circulation
  • stimulation of the lymphatic system
  • reduction of stress hormones
  • increased joint mobility and flexibility
  • improved skin tone
  • speedier healing of soft tissue injuries
  • heightened mental alertness
  • reduced anxiety and depression.

Different types of massage

Typically, the massage practitioner uses either oil or talcum powder to allow their hands to slip over the person’s skin. Sometimes, a sheet or thin piece of cloth might be used for the same effect.

The different types of massage may include:

  • Aromatherapy – essential oils made from selected flowers and plants are added to the massage oil for their particular therapeutic properties. For example, the scent of sandalwood is thought to reduce nervous tension.
  • Baby massage – can help to treat constipation, colic and sleeping problems. Studies have found that regular massage helps premature babies to gain weight at a faster rate.
  • Reflexology – massage of the feet can encourage healing in other parts of the body.
  • Therapeutic – also known as ‘Western’ or ‘Swedish’ massage. One of the most popular forms of massage in Australia, this technique is designed to promote relaxation and improve blood circulation.
  • Remedial – encourages healing of injured soft tissue, such as muscles, tendons and ligaments.
  • Hot Stone Massage – is a relaxing technique that uses the heat from the stones to penetrate into the muscle tissues
  • Sports – is a blend of techniques that aim to enhance performance and help overworked muscles to recover quickly.
  • Chi Nei Tsang – an abdominal massage process (45-60 minutes on the abdomen) which improves circulation to the abdominal organs, intestines, reproductive organs, muscles and tendons inside the pelvic cavity and lower back.

Special considerations

There are some instances where massage isn’t recommended, including:

  • during pregnancy, especially the first trimester
  • if skin rashes, cuts or infections are present
  • if fractures or broken bones are suspected.

Do Genes Rule Your Life? Breast Cancer, Ovarian Cancer & Angelina Jolie

Wednesday, March 25th, 2015

Below is the article from Huffington Post about Angelina Jolie’s most recent preventative surgery, removing her ovaries and fallopian tubes and putting her into early menopause.  This was after her controversial decision to remove her breasts a few years ago.  Every woman needs to make decisions in their life about how to treat their hormones, how to look after themselves if conditions arise.  I know that I would avoid surgery, chemo, radiation at all costs.  Each time we have medical intervention (scans, biopsies, surgeries, mammograms), research indicates we may be increasing our risk of cancer.  Particularly in relation to preventing female hormonal cancers, always have intervention in the second half of your cycle (from ovulation through to your period) to reduce the risk of activating oestrogen-dominant cancers.

We all have between 500-1000 ‘dodgy genes’ such as the ones linked to breast cancer, that BRAC 1 and BRAC 2 genes,

What can we do to prevent breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer??

1. Maintain optimal weight – talk to us about how to start your journey of regaining your health and body.

2. Look at hormonal imbalances and work to correct them – cysts, fibroids, PCOS, endometriosis, pelvic inflammation:  there are many natural therapies that can help these conditions:  reflexology, microcurrent, kinesiology, herbal and nutritional supplements, oestrogen dominance reversal

3. Look at inflammatory processes in your body and start to quench the inflammation:  headaches & migraines, aches and pains, structural imbalances, acid/alkaline balance etc

4. Look at diet.  Know your allergies and intolerances and avoid where necessary.  Eat plenty of health greens, healthy colourful fruit and vegies, lots of organic food, lots of filtered water. Avoid excessive sugar, grains, bad fats, starchy carbs, alcohol, sweets.  Keep insulin resistance low (we can test for this), as some research is indicating if female cancers are not oestrogen dependent, they are often insulin dependent.

5. Lifestyle.  Enjoy life.  Relax.  Yoga.  Meditation.  Walk.  Swim.  Live!

6. Boost your immunity.  Know what’s going on inside your body (looking at your blood in real time, urinalysis, bio-impedance screenings).

Call us to see if we can help you (I know we can!)

Angelina Jolie has revealed that she underwent preventative surgery to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed last week after tests found inflammatory markers that could be an indication of cancer.

Jolie, who had a preventive double mastectomy in 2013 when genetic tests showed an 87 percent risk of breast cancer, wrote in a New York Times op-ed that the same BRCA1 gene gives her a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer.

As a result, the 39-year-old filmmaker, actress, UN envoy and mother of six had been planning to undergo the procedure for some time.

It is a less complex surgery than the mastectomy, but its effects are more severe. It puts a woman into forced menopause,” Jolie wrote. “So I was readying myself physically and emotionally, discussing options with doctors, researching alternative medicine, and mapping my hormones for estrogen or progesterone replacement. But I felt I still had months to make the date.”

When she learned two weeks ago that tests revealed higher inflammation levels, Jolie and her doctors decided it was time. Her husband, actor Brad Pitt, who was in France at the time, flew to be with her during the procedure, a laparoscopic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy.

Jolie wrote that doctors found a small benign tumor on one ovary, but no signs of cancer in any of the tissues.

As a result of the surgery, she is now in menopause.

After her double mastectomy, Jolie revealed to People magazine that she was planning to have her ovaries removed. She also told Entertainment Weekly that she was preparing to have another surgery to prevent cancer.

In her latest op-ed, Jolie emphasised that her decisions are specific to her, and that a family history of the disease played a role in her decision. She lost her mother, grandmother and aunt to cancer.

Jolie said other women may have different options, writing:

“I did not do this solely because I carry the BRCA1 gene mutation, and I want other women to hear this. A positive BRCA test does not mean a leap to surgery. I have spoken to many doctors, surgeons and naturopaths. There are other options. Some women take birth control pills or rely on alternative medicines combined with frequent checks. There is more than one way to deal with any health issue. The most important thing is to learn about the options and choose what is right for you personally.”

She added that younger women may have the option to remove the fallopian tubes but keep their ovaries so they do not go into menopause and can still have children.

“It is not easy to make these decisions,” Jolie wrote. “But it is possible to take control and tackle head-on any health issue. You can seek advice, learn about the options and make choices that are right for you. Knowledge is power.”

LEAP:  What Is It?

LEAP is an Applied Physiology (Kinesiology) protocol which activates areas of the brain which are not currently being accessed fully.  It uses a bio-feedback mechanism which accurately measures inability for specific parts of the brain to function.

Kinesiology uses muscle testing to access specific areas of the brain.  We use acupuncture points (no needles) which have been clinically shown to increase neuronal flow (nerve pathways), glial cell function, increases nutrition and oxgygen  to these areas, thereby allowing better function.

LEAP allows us to be the best we can be!

The inactivity of these areas causes any combination of learning difficulties:

  • comprehension problems,
  • switching of letters (p&d, q&b) maths,
  • poor visual integration
  • poor auditory memory
  • concentration problems (or daydreaming),
  • many  symptoms such as clumsiness and co-ordination difficulties.
  • Stress & inability to remember under stress
  • Higher level comprehension and so much more

The areas of dysfunction in the brain include the frontal lobes (higher thinking functions), logic brain (left side) and gestalt brain – your creative/emotional (right side), along with too much information in the form of fear patterns being stored in the amygdala, causing day to day disruption of brain function.

 LEAP:  Who Can Benefit?

Children and adults with learning problems will often be on a Stress Avoidance Cycle, which means the brain will switch off rather than allow the stress of not being able to handle a problem.

Any person who wishes to utilise their brain at the optimum level will benefit by LEAP.

LEAP opens up the pathways in the brain and allows free thinking within any subject, ie, maths/English, and reduces stress associated with fatigue, fluoro lights, computer radiation, mobile phone stress and other common allergens (such as sugars, wheat, candida)

  • Students of all ages
  • People requiring brain power at work
  • Post-stroke, post operation poor memory
  • Kids who have had glue ear, birthing problems, vaccine side-effects, stress (such as having siblings!)
  • Kids with poor writing ability, neck & shoulder issues, headaches & migraines

 LEAP:  Who Developed It?

Dr Charles Krebs, author of ‘Revolutionary Way of Thinking’ (highly recommended for anyone interested in understanding brain function and integration or the fundamentals of LEAP) is a scientist who had an accident in the 1980’s, which left part of his brain permanently damaged.  When he found Kinesiology, it ultimately changed his life…allowing access to pathways which had ‘shut down’ since his accident.

Dr Krebs not only became a Kinesiologist, but took the protocols one step further and has developed and researched LEAP techniques on over 8000 people.

Dr Krebs currently works in research facilities at Harvard, Germany, Switzerland & London.

 LEAP:  Gives Results!!

LEAP is currently having between 80-98% success rate.  Medically, nothing has been found to change the physiology of the brain (in other words, nothing increases brain function), whereas LEAP does!

It is a protocol which requires a number of treatments (10-20) and these treatments can be spaced to suit any budget or timeframe.  Children often need a ‘top-up’ every few years when major hormonal or growth spurts take place.  If children or adults are incredibly neurologically disturbed, it may take much longer!  This doesn’t mean that improvements won’t be seen earlier on, it’s about working with the person’s brain & body, finding the deficits and correcting them one by one (in the most neurologically correct order!!)

LEAP truly is revolutionary and should be considered with any learning difficulties, ADD, ADHD and dyslexia.

BREAKTHROUGH FOR DYSLEXIA AND LEARNING DISABILITIES

  • Constantly bumping into things or dropping things.
  • Difficulty in following motion or moving things (balls, people, traffic).
  • Difficulty in following sequential instructions or events.
  • Difficulty in understanding words in normal conversation.
  • Difficulty with reading, writing and mathematics.
  • Doing opposite of what was told.
  • Dysequilibrium (balance dysfunction).
  • Feelings of inferiority, stupidity, clumsiness.
  • Get drowsy or tend to fall asleep while driving on a highway or open road.
  • Gets lost easily or all the time.
  • Inability to concentrate, even when involved in a particular activity, such as a game.
  • Inability to organise daily activities, particularly in allotting proper time.
  • Inability to relate to people in groups or to understand the conversation.
  • Inability to remember numbers.
  • Little or no concept of time
  • Need to reread the same word or phrase to get any meaning out of it.
  • Poor motor coordination.
  • Poor or non-existent sense of direction
  • Sharp emotional or mood swings.
  • Stuttering, hesitant speech, poor word recall.
  • Unable to, or unsure in making decisions.
  • Various phobias (including height), motion-related (elevators, bridges, etc.)

And many, many more.  This is a multi-faceted condition, which escapes detection many times because of its diverse symptomatology.

Salicylate Sensitivities… Side-effects and Symptoms…

Monday, June 4th, 2012

So… you’ve been thinking you might have a salicylate sensitivity…  Many symptoms may be linked:

  • cystitis, urinary tract infections
  • rashes, eczema, hives, welts
  • itchy eyes, itchy skin, histamine reactions
  • asthmas, stuffy and runny noses
  • nasal polyps

We’ve also seen things like ADHD, ADD, ODD linked to intolerances and sensitivities…  Headaches and migraines, bloating, burping, belching…

Oh my goodness, the list goes on. And although we work with substances such as these with a combination of homeopathics, natural supplements, kinesiology techniques, microcurrent – we know we can work to boost immunity in the long term, thereby relieving symptoms and improving quality of life!

NEURAL ORGANISATION TECHNIQUE (N.O.T.)

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

NEURAL ORGANIZATION TECHNIQUE (N.O.T.)

I have taken training from several doctors in Australia and the United States who have developed techniques that deal with identifying and correcting faults in the nervous system. One technique that I have mastered is called Neural Organization Technique. It is a very powerful technique wherein its originator, Dr. Carl Ferrari, used muscle response testing to find the basic sequences or “programs” that we are all built with on a primitive level.

It encompasses knowledge from chiropractic, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, reflexology, Neuro Linguistic Programming, and more. What is unique to Dr. Ferreri’s work is that he has found order in the system so that there is very little guesswork in making corrections. The protocols for correcting the body are to be done in a specific sequence every time on every person. It is as if someone has found the owner’s manual for the basic neurology of the human body and the reflexes to correct and reset it!

For example, one can reprogram an immune system by correcting a sequence of 15 to 18 reflexes on the body in about 5 minutes. To demonstrate the specificity of the technique, one can then reverse the sequence and recreate the faulty immune system for demonstration purposes. We can do this with the hormonal programs, scoliosis, learning disabilities, etc. This is a very powerful, very specific and very encompassing technique that takes only 120-150 minutes to complete all corrections! It is accomplished with very low force, and once it is done, the disorganization DOES NOT USUALLY RETURN unless there is a new significant trauma.

At first I found this hard to believe, however I have now treated many patients globally who have returned a year later for re-examination to show that all the corrections were still holding.

Every condition known to man involves nervous system disorganization at a base causative level. Therefore, one of the primary treatments in correcting any condition would be to correct and reorganize the nervous system using this technique before continuing with another modality. The body is organized functionally into four primal survival systems which are generally known as the feeding, fight/flight, reproduction and immune systems. All physiological, neurological, vegetative and cognitive activities must function within or through these survival systems in an organized and integrated manner. In order for the body to survive, these systems must be organized within themselves first and then must be integrated and synchronized with each other. This organization is manifest through the integrated function of the central nervous system. Various kinds of stress including physical, emotional, chemical, or environmental trauma can, and many times do, interfere with the harmonious and organized function of these reflex systems and ultimately the central nervous system itself.

Neural Organization Technique (NOT), a non-invasive, kinesiologically-based treatment protocol, is designed to recognize any of the disorganizations that may be found within the neural programmes of these primal survival systems if damaged or otherwise compromised. The treatment protocols are then designed to specifically organize or reorganize a disorganized central nervous system. A disruption of the natural balance within these previously synchronized processes will cause a change in the electromagnetic (EM) field in various parts of the body. This EM change can then be measured, analyzed and treated. Homeostasis is then restored to the body by activating combinations of the known reflex systems, acupuncture meridians, muscle spindles, magnetic energy, cranial and spinal bone balances and nutrition which control these systems. The key to the success of this treatment protocol is that it recognizes the need for the specific organization and integration of all systems within the body.

The body is a totally integrated biological and energetic entity where everything affects everything else in one way or another and as the old song goes, the “head bone” is really connected to the “foot bone”. It is impossible to treat one part of the body without affecting or causing stress or change somewhere else in the body.

The list of conditions treated with this method almost reads like a pathology book because it is so diverse. This is because the treatment protocols are aimed at the neurological, physiological and energetic deficits which either cause or allow the condition or deficit to exist, and not necessarily at the condition itself. It doesn’t matter what you have or what you call it but rather why you have it. We don’t treat the disease but we do treat the causes.

Neural Organization Technique is unique in other ways not found in other treatment protocols. The NOT examination and treatment protocols take into account the body’s awareness of itself and the circumstances of life as it is lived. Eyes open and closed, light and dark and half-light conditions (dawn, dusk, etc) and various eye directions are a normal part of the usual examination and treatment procedures. Also considered are changing body positions (getting up from sitting or lying), cold, heat, walking, jumping, running, sitting in the car, etc. which very often influence the memory of the circumstances surrounding the condition. These circumstances, when included in the treatment protocol, are almost always key to successful treatment and usually make for rapid and successful conclusions to any condition.

Problems treated by NOT

Some of the many conditions which I have successfully treated or corrected include:

  • Headaches

  • Learning disabilities/dyslexia

  • Grinding or clenching teeth, jaw tension/misaligned or clicking jaws

  • Chronic neck pain and whiplash injuries

  • Chiropractic adjustments that don’t hold

  • Acute or chronic back pain, disc degeneration, and sciatica

  • Arm, hand, leg, or foot pain

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Recurring ear and sinus infections

  • Tendonitis and muscle spasms

  • Tingling or numbness in the hands or legs

  • Scoliosis

  • Hernias (both inguinal and hiatal)

  • Prostate hypertrophy (enlargement) and prolapsed uterus

  • Frequent urination/incontinence

  • Nausea

  • Food sensitivities

  • Allergies/frequent colds and coughs

  • Immune and autoimmune disorders

  • Acid reflux, chronic gas bloating and belching

  • Female and male sexual problems

  • Thyroid conditions

  • Hypoglycemia/Hyperglycemia/Diabetes

  • Sleeping problems

  • Concentration difficulties/Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD)

  • Chronic tiredness/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

  • Multiple Sclerosis

  • Vertigo, balance problems, motion sickness, difficulty with heights

  • Asthma/shortness of breath

  • Visual and hearing difficulties

  • Epilepsy

  • Traumatic brain injury

  • Down’s syndrome

  • Cerebral Palsy

The method of examination for all of the above is based on kinesiological concepts in which a strong muscle indicator [a muscle which can resist reasonable force on command] is used. This method accesses the body’s own knowledge of itself. If there is a functional or structural deficit anywhere in the body, there will be a change in the electromagnetic energy in that part or function. When that part or reflex area is touched by either the examiner or the patient there is a distraction to the overall energy field as the body tries to compensate for the change. This change is registered in the test muscle and the muscle momentarily weakens on stress.

The Interconnectedness of the Body

Nothing happens in or to the body without total body awareness of the incident. This awareness is communicated through an intact nervous system so that the body can accommodate the particular incident and can act appropriately to survive. As these systems are involved in our basic survival, they must also of necessity be reflex in nature, that is, automatic, needing no cognitive activity or training to function. Trauma in all of its possibilities can and does disrupt the neural programmes within these reflex systems which then send inappropriate signals to the body.

There is an axiom in neurology which is known as the ‘all or none’ rule.

If there is sufficient stimulation then that neurological program must fully activate and if not, it will not. Our research has identified the specific areas in or on the body which will activate the neural circuits within these programmes. They in turn control all possibilities including posture, gait, balance, movement, glandular, immune, digestive and cognitive functions.

A frequent question asked by both patients and doctors is “how long does it last?” If the corrections are made properly and completely, they usually last until the patient re-injures themselves, which may be many years later.

I personally use other techniques in the field of emotional and energetic healing to assist people in their return to wellness. Neural Organization Technique, however, must be done with every person to ensure that the body computer can hold onto the corrections, be they physical, emotional, or dietary.

There are less than 100 Neural Organization Technique doctors around the world and we have worked for years to decipher and correct the neural faults that appear specific to each and every condition known. We are all amazed at Dr. Ferreri’s genius at what he has created and I continue to follow in his pioneering footsteps by making myself available for treatments, lectures, research projects, and training.

Blood Sugar Balancing: 5 Keys to Preventing Diabetes

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Blood sugar imbalances create so many problems for people today: but it is possible not only to prevent diabetes, but also in beginning the process of reversing diabetes.  We see so many people who have the beginning symptoms of sugar cravings or dizziness when it’s been a few hours since they’ve eaten.

What are the symptoms of blood sugar imbalances?

  • needing to eat regularly
  • dizziness if you haven’t eaten in a few hours
  • hungry within an hour of eating
  • sluggish liver – inability to lose weight, poor energy
  • (or hungry all the time)
  • mood disorders
  • hormonal imbalances such as PMT & PCOS
  • headaches and migraines
  • chocolate cravings

There are 5 keys to preventing diabetes:

  1. eat a protein snack every 3-4 hours: meats, nuts, cottage cheese, cheese, tofu
  2. eat fish for your dinner 3 x weekly along with salmon/sardines for lunch 3-4 x per week.
  3. maintain a healthy weight and/or work towards a more balanced BMI (body mass index)
  4. use products which balance your blood sugar: for example, we utilise products such as Metagenics Insulex, Resist X, Fibroplex, Meta Oil
  5. exercise regularly: 30 minutes daily (minimum) has been shown to balance blood sugar and help our cells to function –  usually blood sugar balancing is also about having insulin resistance, therefore the cells simply can’t take in insulin into the cells, and energy creation can’t happen effectively inside the cells.

Our solutions for blood sugar balancing:

  • We have a weight loss programme (and a payment plan to save you money) to start the process of fat loss.
  • We have a chronic pain programme (if pain is the reason exercise is difficult) which helps to reverse chronic pain conditions.
  • We have a hormonal balancing programme (and a payment plan to save you money) to balance all of the hormones in your body.  Hormones are everything!  Nothing happens in your body without a hormonal component.  Nothing!
  • We use frequency specific microcurrent and infrared saunas to detoxify the cell membranes to detoxify insulin and allow the insulin to be utilised the way that it should.

So there are many ways we can help you, here at New Leaf Natural Therapies for your hormonal imbalances.  See us today!
