Body Composition and Weight Loss! Why It’s So Important!

Thursday, April 27th, 2017
We’ve specialised in weight loss processes at New Leaf for over 10 years – using several types of weight loss processes including the HCG Rapid Weight Loss programme, Shake It, Keto, Paleo… and I TRULY BELIEVE that weight loss without regular (weekly is optimal!) VLA BioImpedance Screenings is dangerous!
A few years ago I had two people in a short space of time that had both lost muscle mass and muscle quality on HCG.  This confused me until I realised that they had both decided to continue the HCG diet BEYOND the allowed 42 days maximum.  Both had done an extra 2 weeks instead of going back onto consolidation as the protocol requires.  It was really interesting to see because it highlighted that the HCG rules are really important.  Many of my clients say they could do HCG or Steak Days or Apple Days forever!
I had another client who (with another naturopath) had done 6 weeks of juice fasting and her inflammation was through the roof, her muscle mass and muscle quality was a joke.  It was scary the damage that had been done to her body.  She said ‘but I feel great’!  I said, ‘well, that’s because your body is running on sugar all day every day!’.  We had a lot of work to do to repair her body.  If juice fasting is to be done to prevent or help health problems (such as cancer) increasing inflammation during the process is not the way to go….
Another client (this was who I call my mars bar lady!) on the Shake It weight loss programme, who was continually losing about 1/2 kilo per week and had done incredibly well, turned up for her apt and said ‘I’ve been a bit naughty, I don’t expect to lose weight this week’.  We did her VLA and found:
  • weight about the same as previously
  • 2 kilos LOSS of muscle mass
  • 30% decrease in muscle quality
  • 2 kilos of combination extra fat and fluid.
  • she’d eaten 3 mars bars (on special at a service station – don’t do it!!) at a servo 2 days earlier.
  • it took 3 weeks to regain her muscle mass and muscle quality and bring her fat mass down to ‘before’ the mars bar day!
One of my ladies in yesterday had only lost 200g this week (had missed 4 doses of HCG and hadn’t had optimal diet over weekend)… but overall there had still been good changes:
  • 450g reduced normal fat
  • 500g reduced tummy fat
  • less hydrated in muscles
  • more fluid outside cells
So  don’t allow your body to fall apart while losing weight.  Talk to us about maintaining or losing weight healthily!!

In other words, there had been a kilo shift for the better, a kilo of inflammatory fluid (which needs releasing – yes!) but she wouldn’t have known without weekly VLA BioImpedance Screenings….

Australia’s Healthy Weight Week 13th-19th February 2017

Tuesday, February 14th, 2017

We all know that being overweight is unhealthy.  But many don’t realise the complete list of health issues that can come from being over or under weight … it’s all about how out of balance we are.  We can support everything to do with weight loss or weight gain – how long it takes depends on how out of balance we are!

For example, here’s a few crucial ideas and concepts:

  • Healthy BMI (Body Mass Index) is 20-24.99
  • Overweight BMI is 25-29.99
  • Obese BMI is 30-39.99.     (This is 20% more than highest optimal weight)
  • Morbidly Obese BMI is over 40
  • And yes, footballers and weight lifters are an obvious group who we would look at the VLA carefully, as they’re huge but not obese!
  • SUCKED IN your abdomen should be less than 32.5 inches / 82.55 cm for women OR 34.5 inches / 87.6 cm for men

Our VLA BioImpedance Screening shows us where your body is sitting.  But there’s more to it than that (what a surprise!!)  You can be a ‘healthy overweight person’ if your fat cells aren’t toxic and if your muscles aren’t marbled with fat.  But once the body is inflamed, it eats away at the muscle mass and creates fat tissue.  We would recommend our VLA BioImpedance Screening; Insulin Resistance Testing; and OligoScan to check this out.

Sarcopoenic Obesity:

This is where we are ‘skinny fat’.  Not enough muscle, too much fat.  It adds to how ‘out of balance’ we are.  You know you see young girls these days who have pale, marbled skin (as opposed to muscley).  They often (according to VLA BioImpedance Screening) are the correct weight and BMI but coming to us for low energy, poor immunity, inability to concentrate, cranky and hormonal!!  Well, problems associated with Sarcopoenic Obesity are:

  • less muscle mass, therefore less ATP (energy molecules).  The less muscle mass, the less cellular energy being created.
  • poor hormonal balance – we need a combination of protein (muscle); fats and nutrients to make hormones:  the body can eat away muscle mass to create hormones if our diet is deficient
  • hard to diagnose or recognise (if you don’t know a practitioner with a VLA!) since these people are often healthy weight.
  • we can also be obese (more than 20% of optimal weight) and have a huge deficit of muscle mass
  • if the COMBINATION of excess fat PLUS how much muscle you need to gain, adds up to 20% of your weight – you get the same health issues as being obese.

Obesity – 20% more than highest healthy weight

  • historically our bodies gain fat to keep us alive
  • therefore, it’s linked to survival
  • therefore, it’s linked to an overactive adrenal system; a slowed down thyroid system, poor liver and digestive function, inability to store fluid in the cells.  It gets to the point where even when life is good, the stress hormones being released (all the time) make it harder and harder to feel happy and optimistic.
  • abdominal/visceral fat particularly is linked to releasing AT LEAST 32 inflammatory hormones at all times!
  • abdominal fat constantly releases fatty acids into the bloodstream which overloads the liver and small intestines
  • these fatty acids make our body more acidic; are linked to mineral deficiencies; leaky gut and poor immunity
  • obesity increases the risk of all disease including heart disease; cancer; diabetes; dementia and stress
  • obesity is linked to anxiety, chronic illness, stress and insomnia
  • losing just 5-7 kg increases fertility by 10-20%

HCG Diet and Exercise: recommendations and guidelines

HCG Diet and Exercise: Guidelines, Warnings and Recommendations

Weight gain during HCG is frustrating – this is why we recommend VLA BioImpedance Screenings every week or two so that you KNOW what is going on in your body….  This article explains WHY we can have a temporary weight gain with exercise.  Knowledge is power.  Know what is going on in your body – and then the motivation will continue!

As with most things, there are multiple views on whether exercise should be incorporated as part of the HCG diet. Even among those who do recommend exercise, there is no consensus on the intensity, duration, frequency, and types of exercise that should be included.

On the HCG diet it is completely possible to lose a significant amount of weight with very little exercise, or even without exercising at all. In fact, some clinics and practitioners recommend absolutely no exercise. For many dieters, especially those who detest physical activity, this is one of their favorite features of the HCG diet. Many dieters have been told that told repeatedly that their weight problems are mostly caused by laziness or lack of exercise. It can certainly feel relieving to be “allowed” or advised to avoid exercise.

The extra fat deposits you are trying to rid yourself of through the HCG diet are great deposits of energy. While on the HCG diet, your body will be breaking down these deposits. The presence of HCG allows this breakdown to occur more easily. Vigorous exercise demands quickly available energy. Even though your body will have a lot of potential energy from fat deposits more readily available, the energy from it cannot be metabolized quickly enough to supply heavily utilized muscles.

Most HCG dieters will track their weight closely. Weighing in daily, or sometimes multiple times per day. Increases in weight during phase 2 of the HCG diet can be alarming. How can you gain weight when only consuming 500 calories in a day?! The breakdown of muscles that occurs from intense workouts can and usually will cause inflammation in the affected muscles. Your body will absorb additional water to aid in the repair of these muscles and this extra water can easily show up in increased weight from one day to the next. The weight will almost always level out over time, but the psychological effect of the temporary weight increase can be difficult for dieters.

Dr. Simeons recommended only light exercise such as walking and light biking. This exercise should only be done at low intensity and for fairly short periods of time. He noted the weight gain caused by vigorous exercise in this way:

“…the weight can temporarily increase — paradoxical though this may sound — after an exceptional physical exertion of long duration leading to a feeling of exhaustion. A game of tennis, a vigorous swim, a run, a ride on horseback or a round of golf do not have this effect; but a long trek, a day of skiing, rowing or cycling or dancing into the small hours usually result in a gain of weight on the following day, unless the patient is in perfect training. In patients coming from abroad, where they always use their cars, we often see this effect after a strenuous day of shopping on foot, sightseeing and visits to galleries and museums. Though the extra muscular effort involved does consume some additional calories, this appears to be offset by the retention of water which the tired circulation cannot at once eliminate.”

Dr. Simeons also noted that patients who insisted on exercising vigorously while on the program often overate because of exercise-induced hunger, stalling weight loss or even leading to weight gain. Many practitioners and dieters take this statement to mean that all exercise is forbidden during phase 2.

Exercise is not forbidden but must be undertaken with great care during the strict diet (Core Phase or Phase 2). Deliberate workouts during the HCG diet should be tailored to each individual’s capabilities. Each person will have a different level of fitness, different strengths, different preferences, and different abilities.

A dieter with a body that is already accustomed to intense exercise will be able to handle exercise much more easily than one who is very out of shape. A fit body will not sustain as much intramuscular damage and its associated inflammatory effects from exercise that a non-fit body would.

In general it is good to take a very cautious approach to exercise while on the HCG diet. You will be taking in very little food, very little fuel for your body to use to power your muscles during exercise. Fat will be released and metabolized for energy, but carbohydrates are a much more easily and quickly metabolized fuel. They are the body’s main source of energy especially during very intense and very long duration exercise. Without them, exhaustion and fatigue occur much more quickly, often along with dizziness and shortness of breath. Another side effect of lack of carbohydrates during vigorous exercise is an extremely strong feeling of hunger, usually with cravings for carbohydrate-laden foods. All of this can work together synergistically against the dieter. An exhausted, light-headed person has a much harder time resisting the body’s increased demands for carbohydrate rich foods!

If you are used to intense exercise already, you can try to continue with what your are doing, but most likely you will lack the necessary energy and/or will not recover as quickly as usual while you are on phase 2 of the HCG diet. If you are not used to intense exercise, do not attempt it during the HCG diet!

If you are used to light or moderate exercise, you may continue as before, possibly shortening the duration or intensity of your workouts as necessary. As with intense exercisers, watch for overtraining and energy levels. Dial down your training if you see any signs of it.

If you are not used to exercise, now is probably not the best time to start.

Some Sample Exercises During Phase 2

Low Intensity (OK for everyone, but always monitor for signs of overtraining)

  • Walking
  • Bicycling
  • Yoga
  • Gentle swimming
  • Lawn mowing

Medium Intensity (Only for those already accustomed to medium intensity workouts monitor for overtraining)

  • Jogging
  • Snow shoveling
  • Lap swimming
  • Moving furniture

High intensity (Not Generally Recommended for Phase 2 of HCG Diet)

  • Heavy weight training
  • Running
  • Crossfit
  • Triathlons
  • Sprinting

500 calorie HCG diet – how does it work?!

Friday, March 25th, 2016
Obviously the 500 calorie part of HCG scares people half to death initially… Here’s what SHOULD happen:
1. The HCG drops (10 drops 3 x daily – 4 if you’re starving) should be stimulating the hypothalamus in the brain to release brown fat from your body.
2. The brown fat is around 1000-1500 calories daily – therefore your body is REALLY running on 500 calories of food PLUS the brown fat calories: so we’re really running on 1500-2000 calories daily.
3. The drops need to be taken evenly throughout the day – by doing this we are consistently releasing brown fat into the bloodstream, which is keeping hunger at bay. Some people hardly ever feel ‘hungry’ on HCG.
4. If we’re hungry on HCG there are several factors that may be taken into account: blood sugar levels; stress levels; not taking HCG evenly throughout the day; too much exercise.
5. Doing the Very Low Calorie Diet VLCD not only SHRINKS your fat cells, but done correctly also ELIMINATES many fat cells – unlike any other weight loss process (besides liposuction!)
Call us on 3348 6098 for an appointment with our naturopaths to help your HCG process run more easily.  Annette and Lynn can answer many questions on the phone – but often the questions require a naturopathic consultation where there are complicated health issues involved.

Shorter rounds of HCG Rapid Weight Loss Process: losing 2-6 kilos is easy!

    Monday, January 12th, 2015

I’m about to do a short round of HCG to shift 3.5 kilos….. it’s been a busy and delicious month!

I get the question about doing a shorter round of the HCG diet all the time:  personally I’ve done shorter rounds many times simply to shift a couple of kilos when life has been busy, I’m failing to exercise, I’ve had too many parties, meetings one after another – and they all build up. People with only 3-6 kilos to lose don’t necessarily need to do the full round of 23-4o days.  Brown fat builds up in times of stress, times of heavy calorie intake, low exercise times.

So can you still do the diet if you don’t have that much weight to lose? And what is the HCG diet plan for those shorter rounds?

Well to start off, yes, you can a shorter round no problem. I’ve heard from purist that a 26 day round is the shortest you should ever go. But I whole-heartedly disagree. First off, I’ve done shorter rounds, and I’ve never seen any issues with anyone doing a shorter round in the four years I’ve been helping people with the diet.

So yes, you can do a shorter round.

If you have, say, 4 kilos to lose what you should do is plan on about 20 days of the diet. So get enough HCG to last you at least 20 days. People who have a lot more weight to lose will lose 4 kilos in a week or so, but when you are so close to your goal weight you tend to lose a bit slower and it’s nice to plan ahead and not get caught without enough HCG drops.

Then just start your round as you would any round, do the 2 loading days, then on the third day you start the low calorie phase. Keep going on this phase until you reach the end of your round or you reach your goal weight. If you hit your goal weight on say day 15, then stop the drops on that day, do 3 days of the diet without taking the HCG drops to make sure it’s out of your system, then jump into the maintenance phase.

Once you are in maintenance you should still do the 3 weeks of maintenance. Yes, do 3 whole weeks even though you did a shorter round. You need to give yourself time to set that weight point so you don’t go back to your old weight. There is no point in losing weight if you don’t keep it off, so take maintenance phase seriously.

Now if you have say 2 kilos to lose, that’s probably not enough weight to go to the trouble of starting the diet. I did a round to lose 3.5 kilos but already had left over HCG from my first round so I used it up. But I don’t think I’d go buy more if I only had 2 kilos to lose:  I’d probably do the Shake It or Keto System over a couple of weeks.

One thing I do want to warn you about is don’t compare yourself to others while on the diet. Especially if you are so close to your goal weight. As I mentioned earlier, the closer you are to your goal the slower your weight loss will be. But that’s normal so just be aware of it. Also realize that you will get to your goal weight as long as you keep going and don’t quit. Quitting won’t get you to your weight loss goals. So just keep going until you hit that end result you are looking for.

HCG Rapid Weightloss Drops – How to take them and store them correctly!

    Tuesday, November 12th, 2013
Storing and Taking your RFM HCG Rapid Weight Loss Drops…
These are sensitive energetic homoeopathic drops.
They work brilliantly as long as we follow a few simple rules and take care of them:
    1.  Store away from electronic equipment – don’t keep on the microwave, in the fridge, next to your mobile phone in your handbag…
    2.  Take 20-30 minutes away from ‘strong tasting substances’ such as drinking coffee, cleaning your teeth, onions and garlic (and other strong tasting herbal additions to your meals)
    3.  10 drops 3 x daily is the usual dose.  If you are extra hungry, feel free to take an extra dose.  If you are exceptionally low in muscle mass (that has been shown via your VLA Bioimpedance Screening done at New Leaf); you may need an extra dose as well to stimulate muscle gain.
Call us for further information on the HCG Weight Loss Programme; our VLA specials; our support for weight loss (saunas, kinesiology, lymphatic drainage massage), Live Blood Screenings, Cholesterol testing etc.

HCG Weight Loss Linked with Better Hormonal Control, Less Stress, Less Depression and Less Anxiety!

    Wednesday, July 10th, 2013

HCG Helps with Hormonal Control!!  Lose 10-20 kilos in 40 days!

There’s a lot of interesting information out there about HCG.  We’ve been using it clinically for 2 years with VLA Bioimpedance Analysis Screenings & Insulin Resistance Testing and find it amazing.  It works correctly for long-term weight loss when the plan is followed correctly!  We also find that higher fat mass is linked with stress hormones so unexpected benefits include less anxiety, less depression and less stress!

There are many positive impact of HCG has on all of our hormones as our weight reduces.  When our BMI is over 30 our fat mass becomes the number one hormone producing tissue in our bodies – controlling so many things:

    *  Supports fertility for both men and women – losing 6+ kilos can increase chances of falling pregnant by a whopping 40%.  IVF is only successful in around 5% of cases.  The combination of weight loss and IVF definitely improves outcomes for our clients.

    *  feel good hormones – that’s why weight is directly linked with anxiety, depression, stress, frustration and irritability

    *  Pain & Inflammation:  when our BMI is over 30 we are constantly releasing inflammatory hormones – our body then stores fluid to dilute these hormones.  Eventually it raises our BP and this can be the first indication of inflammation.

    *  Weight is also linked to immune system issues.  When our feel good hormones are down and our stress levels are high (BMI over 30 does this) then our immune system takes its cue from the hormones and starts to shut down.  Like a petulant teenager, the immune system says ‘you don’t want to be here? me neither!’

    *  Blood Sugar Balancing:  we’ve found pre-diabetic/diabetic clients can come off their medication (not Type 1) after HCG.  Because fat mass controls so many hormones in the body, insulin resistance is a huge problem upsetting sleep, energy, stress levels and other hormones.  HCG often takes people back into normal cholesterol levels as well as less insulin resistance!

    *  Energy Improvement:  because fat mass increases adrenalin and stress hormones, it tends to switch off/down our thyroid and energy production pathways.  As the fat mass reduces energy generally improves – especially when combined with detoxification supplements throughout the process.

Always find out what supplements will be most appropriate for you throughout the HCG process.  Phone consultations available at New Leaf.

HCG Rapid Weight Loss: Safe, Easy, Effective, PROVEN!!!

    Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

HCG:  the safest, fastest, easiest way that we’ve ever found to lose weight IF it’s done properly.  Without detoxification, balancing hormones, HCG can make people a toxic and emotional mess.  At New Leaf, we use a combination with natural therapies which:

    *  detoxification supplements which detox fat and blood and toxins are being released (hugely important to stop rebound weight issues)

    *  do VLA Bio-impedance Screenings so that you KNOW what is going on in your body – fat mass, muscle mass, inflammation, toxicity, metabolism.  One of the worst things about weight loss is hitting those ‘stalls’.  With VLA Bio-impedance Screenings, we can see if it’s because you’re gaining muscle mass, getting more hydrated, releasing toxins and storing fluid to dilute them…  All of which gives you the information you need in order to stay focussed, positive and switched on.  Most naturopaths do not have our experience in dissecting this information for you – and don’t know what to do specifically on HCG.  We’re HCG specialists at New Leaf!

    *  balance blood sugar:  some people need extra support.  If blood sugar isn’t balanced we can feel hungry (or starving), have highs and lows of energy, poor sleep/insomnia, and feel stressed.

    *  break down scar tissue in the abdomen:  With Chi Nei Tsang Abdominal Massage we can ensure your organs through the abdomen (liver, gall bladder, kidneys, adrenals, reproductive organs, bowels, bladder, spleen, pancreas, lungs) are functioning properly.  Amazing treatment protocol that improved function of all of these major organs in your body.

    *  kinesiology for self sabotage (ever experienced that with weight issues??!!).  Put on weight, sabotage your whole day?  Can’t stop eating once you start?  Let’s start working on those self-beliefs that don’t serve you for your goals:  “I’m not worth it”  “I can’t do it”  “I can’t do it without support”  “It’s too hard making two meals at night time”.  If you think about sabotage, they’re generally just thoughts that don’t serve us and don’t help us to move forwards in life.

Keys to Consolidation in HCG Weight Loss Process, Brisbane HCG Specialists

    Saturday, November 10th, 2012
Keys to Maintenance/Phase 3 on HCG:
*Maintain your weight.  Never allow your body to go higher than 8-900g higher than your end-weight at the end of the HCG process.  (I prefer to use the 2nd day AFTER the HCG drops are out of my system)
    * Think healthy.  Fresh.  Home cooked.  Fruits, vegetables, proteins.  Slowly add cream, eggs, cheese, nuts, extra fruits, vegetables, protein choices.
    *  continue no sugar or starch until end of phase 3 – these throw blood sugar out and may stop your hypothalamus from re-setting. You’re so close – trust the process.  These are grains, breads, refined foods, potatoes, pumpkin, corn, sweet potatoes for some people.
    * add in 1 food at a time so that you can weigh the next day and see if any weight has gone on. If so, has something created inflammation?
    *  have a kinesiologist?  Use them (or our kinesiologists) to find out if the foods you are adding into your diet are great for you, or upset your body.
    * drink plenty of water – continue the detoxification process…
    * If weight goes up 8-900g more than end HCG drops weight, do a Steak Day to reset the metabolism. It works a treat, the weight drops and back you go. If you don’t reset on the day of the weight-gain, you may not be re-setting your hypothalamus, even though you are doing the process otherwise…
    *  Steak Day:  drink as much fluid, herbal teas, mineral water throughout the day as you like, and at night time eat the biggest steak you’d like, along with an apple or a tomato… and watch the weight loss the next day!!
    Good luck!!
