Kidney Stone Support

Wednesday, September 13th, 2017
  • I found this article today on Kidney Stones – funnily enough I sort of agree that generally home remedies are not enough to be beneficial short term, but clinically I’ve found the coke and asparagus treatment beneficial for clients over the past 10 years.  So I disagree that it doesn’t work.  I do however, recommend the general recommendations of apple cider vinegar (if not allergic/intolerant); lemon juice and olive oil in our diets; and herbal teas such as Stone Breaker tea are great – available at New Leaf (the lemon juice and olive oil cleanse is more for gall stones and only when appropriate).  It takes a long time to break down kidney stones and the coke and asparagus treatment (done on ONE day – not multiple days – so long term it won’t have an effect as long as we rehydrate!)
  • We also use supplements that support better kidney and bladder health and re-alkalise the body (a full cleanse often takes 2 years!  Not these quick few weeks – this will NOT help prevent kidney stones)
  • With regards to the coke and asparagus treatment – it’s VERY specific and sometimes needs to be done once per month over a series of months if the stones are large or there are multiple stones
  • We would recommend Looking at your Blood and performing an OligoScan – finding out where the mineral levels in your body are, and looking at toxicity.  Kidney issues are about toxicity of one form or another…
  • We would also look at acupuncture and kinesiology to improve kidney energy and functionality – and microcurrent treatments to support breaking down the stones – along with teas and supplements to start the process of breaking down the kidneys.
  • Keep in mind that the kidney is the FOURTH filter in the body – the first is the digestive tract, the second is the liver, the third is the lymphatic system and the FOURTH is the kidneys/urinary tract.  So you are less likely to have kidney issues if all of your other filters are working correctly…
  • If the body is too acidic and we are creating kidney stones – this is only one problem we have.  Acidity creates many other health issues other than kidney stones, and we really need to look at WHY the body is so acidic:  stress, diet, intolerances and allergies, drug and medication use, PTSD, hayfever, sinusitis, chronic infections, lack of purified water…

  • 4 Remedies to Dissolve Kidney Stones… But Only One Works

You’re experiencing severe abdominal pain that’s radiating to your lower back. You also notice blood in your urine and a persistent need to urinate, even though you can only urinate small amounts at a time. You have a history of kidney stones and are pretty sure you are experiencing them again. Not wanting to use medications or surgery to treat your kidney stones, you start to look for successful home remedies that dissolve kidney stones naturally and fast. Four treatments look promising:

    1. Lemon Juice and Olive Oil
    2. Apple Cider Vinegar
    3. Coke and Asparagus
    4. Lab Grade Chanca Piedra

Which ones work and which ones don’t? We’ve done the testing and leg work to sort out the success rates of each of these treatments.

Why Do I Get Kidney Stones?

Our kidneys are essential organs that filter out the waste in our bloodstream. The byproduct of this waste is our urine. Stones develop from buildup of mineral deposits in our urine that stick together in the kidneys. Typically, these stones develop because of a lack of water that dilutes the accumulation of these minerals on the lining of our kidneys. Certain medications, medical disorders (e.g., Crohn’s Disease), and a family history of kidney stones can also increase your chances of suffering from them.

Because they are known to cause a great deal of pain, it is no surprise that those who suffer from kidney stones are will to try just about anything to prevent them and to stop them from coming back. Known medicinal treatments include the use of alpha-blockers such as Flomax that relax the lining of the ureter to help stones pass more easily, and medications that treat the associated pain. Additionally, surgical procedures and other non-intrusive means of surgical treatment may be prescribed to break up both calcium oxalate and uric acid kidney stones. These treatments include ureteroscopy and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL).

Preventative measures used to halt the formation of kidney stones to begin with include dietary changes and behavioral changes. These include things like decreasing sodium intake, drinking more water to stay properly hydrated, not working out excessively, not going into saunas (to prevent excessive sweating and dehydration), and eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

    What are the Symptoms?

Kidney stone sufferers may tell you that trying to pass a kidney stone is about the worst pain they have ever experienced in their lifetime. Some of the most common signs and symptoms of kidney stones include the following:

    • Sudden, severe pain that comes and goes in intensity. Common areas afflicted include the back, groin, abdomen, side, and genitals.
    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Blood in the urine or abnormal urine colors
    • Frequent and painful urination

Though kidney stones are not normally life-threatening situations, they are typically a truly uncomfortable situations. And it’s not unusual to experience so much pain that you make your way to the emergency room to find out what is going on.

    Alternate Remedies for Kidney Stones

Increasingly more people are interested in following at-home treatments for kidney stones to prevent the use of medicines and surgeries. A number of alternative remedies have been acknowledged for the treatment of kidney stones. We will present these below and discuss their likelihood in success.

    1. Lemon Juice and Olive Oil

    2 star
    lemon-olive-oil

Sounds awful, doesn’t it? People do claim success in mixing a concoction of lemon juice and olive oil to help dissolve kidney stones as a popular home remedy. Proponents of this method claim that at the first notice of symptoms, mix five ounces of olive oil with five ounces of lemon juice. Drink this combination straight and then drink a glass of water. You should blend this concoction and drink it straight first thing in the morning and again in the late afternoon. Be sure to drink plenty of water as well and extra lemon juice, if possible. Continue this treatment for several days until the stone passes. It is thought that the lemon juice could break down the kidney stones and the olive oil would aid in lubrication to pass the stone more easily. Extra-virgin olive oil is thought to be the best olive oil ingredient to use because it is the thickest and healthiest.

Warning: Lemons are very acidic and can destroy tooth enamel and contribute to heartburn or ulcers.

Our patient surveying indicates some success in a very limited number of kidney stone patients. We give it 2 out of 5 stars.

    2. Apple Cider Vinegar

    2 star
    acv-kidney-stones
Makes your mouth pucker just thinking of it. Some home remedy enthusiasts swear by the use of apple cider vinegar to treat kidney stones. The theory behind it is that apple cider vinegar is made of citric acid that which could play a role in dissolving kidney stones, helping the body pass the stones more easily. In addition, it is believed that apple cider vinegar helps in the prevention of kidney stones to begin with by alkalizing the effect on blood and urine and promoting the production of hydrochloric acid in the body to prevent the formation of kidney stones. Proponents of this home remedy recommend mixing two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with six to eight ounces of water and drinking the mixture frequently throughout the day, and especially before meal times to help dissolve kidney stones. Drinking ample amounts of fresh water throughout the day is also suggested to help flush the kidneys. If the stones are passed, you are advised to continue drinking this solution one to two times a week to prevent future kidney stones from forming.

Warning: Apple cider vinegar is very acidic and can erode esophagus tissue, destroy tooth enamel and may be dangerous when taken with blood pressure and diabetes medications.

Surveys indicate sporadic success in some patients who have been waiting long periods of time for a stone to pass. We give it 2 out of 5 stars.

    3. Coke and Asparagus

    1 star
    Coke Asparagus Kidney Stones
Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? A common home remedy for kidney stones involves drinking a large amount of Coke and following it up by consuming a half pound of steamed asparagus, pureed. Followers of this method suggest that the phosphoric acid found in Coke aids in dissolving the kidney stones. Asparagus is used as a diuretic. Coke alone will dehydrate you, which is not a good thing if you are suffering from kidney stones. It is the interaction with the diuretic asparagus and the phosphoric acid in the Coke that is the key to breaking down the kidney stone and allowing it to pass. In theory.

We’ve seen no evidence that Coke or asparagus provides any help in the passage or dissolving of kidney stones. The University of Chicago characterized this home remedy as “useless” and went on to say:

…the effect of the cola was a worsening of stone risk…

We give this remedy 1 out of 5 stars.

    How Successful are These Treatments?

In short. . .not very. There have been many reports of people using these natural methods, but the efficacy is unsubstantiated. Some people report success with these home remedies, but none of these treatments are based in scientific fact. For every anecdotal success story posted online, there are hundreds more stories of failures (and probably upset stomachs). So, what natural remedies DO work? Let’s get to it…

    4. Lab Grade Chanca Piedra

    5star
    Chanca Piedra
Lab grade chanca piedra has shown high success rates in kidney stone treatment. This herbal remedy breaks down and prevents the development of new kidney stones. All-natural, Chanca Piedra has been shown to scientifically crush the kidney stones to dissolve them and allow easy passing of remnant stone materials. Studies have shown almost instantaneous pain alleviation following the consumption of Chanca Piedra. It first grabbed the attention of the scientific community in a 2002 study on rodents which demonstrated it slowed or halted kidney stone growth. Further studies indicated lab grade Chanca Piedra actually interferes with the process that would normally cause stones to form.

Kidney Stone ResearchProf. Dr. Nestor Schor

Professor Dr. Nestor Schor speaking about his research on lab grade Chanca Piedra:

Treatment with Phyllanthus niruri strongly inhibited the growth of the stones and reduced the number of stones…

These results show that Phyllanthus niruri has an inhibitory effect on crystal growth…

Chi Nei Tsang –Why it is so beneficial for stress and anxiety

Friday, September 12th, 2014

Chi Nei Tsang works specifically on the abdomen using techniques derived from Chinese massage techniques and theory. The theory around this technique focuses largely on the detoxification of toxic energies or ‘winds’, by massaging the abdomen with specific techniques. But what does this mean and how does it help us? While this is a hard definition to understand, we certainly see wonderful benefits in people receiving this treatment. So how can we understand this in physiological terms?

What a large number of our clients find when receiving this treatment is generally two main effects; in the short term, relaxation and stress relief, and in the longer term, greatly improved digestive function. A lot of our clients also experience greater body awareness, such as better and more aware breathing patterns, and better understanding how certain foods and stresses impact their digestive function. These are invaluable tools on the path to self care. This is our ultimate goal – to help others find the tools they need to take charge of their own health. That’s why we love Chi Nei Tsang!

As a practitioner of this technique I have been searching for the ‘why’ of this – these benefits, what is actually happening in the body when they occur? Why is this seemingly simple technique so beneficial? Through further reading and clinical practice, this is what I come to understand:

Chi Nei Tsang is working on the enteric nervous system, or the so-called ‘second brain’ or ‘gut brain’. This system is becoming increasingly recognised as closely linked to the actual brain, and that the two systems interact and influence each other. It’s also working on the diaphragm, reducing tension in this important muscle.

The Second Brain

While the enteric nervous system cannot think or process the way our actual brain can, it is responsible for a large portion of our neurotransmitter production, including about 95% of the body’s production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is involved in the regulation of mood, appetite, and sleep. Serotonin also has some cognitive functions, including memory and learning, and is generally considered our ‘feel good’ hormone. Many anti-depressant or anti-anxiety hormones work by sparing the amount of serotonin that is broken down by the body. The main two factors that affect the production of neurotransmitters in the gut are stress and nutrition. Simply put, if we eat poorly and don’t relax, both our gut and our brain suffer. With Nutritional guidance and Chi Nei Tsang, we can change our brain chemistry for the better.

The diaphragm and breathing

The diaphragm is a key muscle for the function of breathing, and needs to be used properly for deep breathing to occur. When the diaphragm is tense or not used effectively, shallow chest breathing results. This is an issue for us because our breathing pattern predisposes us to either relaxation or to the stress response, depending on how it is that we breathe and how we use the diaphragm.

Deep, abdominal diaphragmatic breathing puts the nervous system in parasympathetic mode, which could be called our ‘tend and befriend’ mode – where the body is calms, regulates its functions better and heals better. When we breathe in the chest and use the diaphragm poorly, we increase the sympathetic response, the stress response. Chest breathing predisposes us towards anxiety and stress. For susceptible people, proper breathing can make a huge difference to quality of life in terms of managing anxiety and stress. Chi Nei Tsang helps to release tension in the diaphragm and in the process of the treatment we teach proper breathing patterns.  It is however not easy to breathe deeply when the digestive system is in distress. This is why Chi Nei Tsang helps so much – by working on both the diaphragm and on releasing tension from the digestive system, we optimise breathing and calm the ‘second brain’.

When treating our clients with Chi Nei Tsang, we learn a lot about how the body manifests and unravels the effects of stress and improper breathing. We’ve seen severe menstrual pain disappear, and chronic back pain resolve. Of course, digestive issues improve significantly with this treatment, as well as anxiety, energy levels and overall sense of wellbeing.

Chronic Fatigue, Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Depression, Chronic Pain Conditions – there is help!

Wednesday, August 20th, 2014

What may all of these conditions have in common?  Chronic Fatigue, Depression, Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Chronic Pain Conditions are all linked to:

  1. Old infections that haven’t been fully resolved.  The ‘particles’ and ‘byproducts’ of these old infections, staph or strep, e-coli, glandular fever EBV etc etc, live in the tissues in the body and do not show up in regular blood tests.  It is estimated by some researchers that up to 80% of infections live in the biofilm, hidden deep inside the tissues in the body, and create a low-grade inflammation that is hard to shift medically. Depression is an inflammatory process – we simply can’t have depression without brain inflammation – there’s such a huge gut-brain connection that current research is looking at infections crossing the blood-brain barrier and being one of the many causes of depression.  Herbal tonics, nutritionals, chi nei tsang abdominal massage and kinesiology all help the body to break down the biofilm, recognise the infections, and start eliminating these toxins.
  2. Poor nutritional status:  recommended daily allowances of nutrients are ridiculously low (and totally useless) when we have a chronic health condition – of any sort.  Studies done in the 1970’s with Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia showed (40 years ago) that all nutritional needs were higher once we’re stressed, in pain, not sleeping, working too hard, bed-ridden.  So a multi-vitamin or thinking we’re going to get the nutrition from our foods was disproven decades ago.
  3. When we’re unwell, our body goes into ‘crisis mode’.  That is, it starts running survival patterns which override normal day to day activities – digestion, blood pressure, lung activity, muscular function – this is why a cold or flu, or small car accident, or death in the family – can trigger a weird group of symptoms that often aren’t put together as being linked to the initial incident or episode.  We start to put together these parts of your history, so that the medical conditions that have occurred finally make sense.

We specialise in supporting people with chronic health conditions – nutritionally giving the cells what they need, structural balancing to take the pressure of the body, survival pattern kinesiology to allow the body to start healing… and much more.  Our Foundations of Health programme, particularly (which takes 9-18 months), is designed to work through cleansing the major filters of the body – the gut & digestion, the liver, the kidneys and immune systems – which slowly but surely allows all of the individual cells of the body to have better nutritional status, improves detoxification and improves health.

New Year HCG Weight Loss … Get your body back now!!

Thursday, January 16th, 2014
My journey … 2014
1st journal!
So I’m my first week down on HCG this year! After my 2 month binge period (Holidays, Christmas, New Year, Birthdays, Get togethers – lots of excuses!!)  I was 69.5 kilos. A lot of this weight was put on with lots of naughtiness: lots of sugar, overeating, Xmas goodies, lollies, alcohol, cheesecakes, treats (many many of them!)… This weight is very ‘dense’ and hard to move, but it’s shifting!

I’m doing the RFM HCG Drops 10 drops 3 x daily; VLA Bio-impedance screenings daily; supplements for my liver, gut, energy levels and lots …of saunas!

I did HCG half heartedly last year after returning from long service leave (long lovely holiday!) but didn’t maintain the weight, didn’t do consolidation and didn’t follow the diet propertly…  Ah well, lost about 5 kilos!
My favourite supplements (for me) on HCG are:
  • Thermoburn – supports abdominal tummy fat – really tough to shift.  1 tab 2-4 x daily
  • Ultra Flora Immune or Probex – increase good gut flora – crucial for helping to shift the toxins from the gut
  • Lipogen or Livatone – both liver and gall bladder support.  I suspect I have gallstones so I’ll need to do my gall bladder flush during consolidation (there’s lots of olive oil as part of the process so you can’t do it during HCG)
  • Lipoic Acid or Glutathione – supports fat and water soluble toxin release
  • Resist X – energy production when we’re feeling sluggish
  • Resilian or Relaxan to help me de-stress and sleep well

The excess fat is 2-part on the Bio-impedance screening. It’s not only the ‘excess fat’ portion of the test, but it’s also the excess ATM, Active Tissue Mass, which is ‘tummy fat’ – very vascular and very hormonally dangerous. It’s the reason tummy fat is linked to heart disease, diabetes and cancer, not to mention adrenal exhaustion and thyroid issues.

Obviously the past 5 days my weight has been a challenge – purely on the scales, and yet the fat mass has continued to lower every day. I have more ‘fluid’ and ‘muscle’ in the body, but the fat mass is reducing.

This is why regular VLA Bio-impedance screenings are so crucial to keep us on track during HCG. Not daily of course, I can, so I do, and I love the numbers!

I’ll keep you posted…

16/1 Today 65.9 kilos
15/1 Yesterday 66.3 kilos 4.83 kilos excess fat
14/1 Tuesday 66.4 kilos 5.31 kilos excess fat     *  2 extra grissini sticks (oops)
13/1 Monday 66.3 kilos 6.09 kilos excess fat

12/1 Sunday 66 kilos 7.33 kilos excess fat
11/1 Saturday 66.6 kilos 7.29 kilos excess fat    * ate twice the amount of steak at night at a friend’s place & glass of red wine
10/1 Friday 67.6 kilos 6.81 kilos excess fat
9/1 Thursday 68.9 kilos 7.54 kilos excess fat

8/1 Wednesday
2nd BINGE DAY 69.5 kilos 8.73 kilos excess fat!

Natural Support for Cancer

Friday, June 28th, 2013
How can New Leaf do for cancer??

People end up in a state of shock with any diagnosis… but I’m healthy. I exercise. I look after myself…

However, the standard things we consider with our cancer clients are (all cancer has the same causes – our genetics have been hugely disturbed – and has effects deep inside the body)

1. BMI – keeping it under 25 – Obviously many people gain weight as they get older – and the BMI over 25 starts putting us in an inflammatory state … cancer is inflammatory. Once our BMI is over 30, it’s releasing inflammatory hormones 100% of the time.  The VLA bioimpedance analysis also gives inflammatory signs – how inflamed the cells are, how much nutrition is stored in the body – or not. These are all cancer risks and can be improved. HCG is fantastic as shifting weight that’s built up over a lifetime.

2. Acidity levels – urine acidity and saliva acid…should be 7ish… the lower it is (closer to 5) puts us in a higher risk for cancer, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis. Cancer doesn’t just magically appear in our bodies. It takes at least (usually) 4 years to develop – requires lots of genetic changes, acidity, less than adequate nutrition to appear. Acidity is caused by many things (this is why we do lots of testing):

  • Parasites, bacterial and fungal infections:  the human microbiome being out of balance
  • Nutritional deficiencies:  we can’t create cancer without deficiencies – it is simply impossible
  • Food allergies and intolerances:  food plays such a huge role – if we constantly have allergies we’re activating TH2 cells in the immune system, this switches down our ability to fight cancer cells which require TH1 activity.
  • Stress, survival patterns, trauma
  • Weight gain

3. Iron, B12, folate – optimal levels. When we do live blood screenings these parameters are crucial. The size of the red blood cells is so important because lots of nutrients travel around the body in the red blood cells – if too small (classic iron deficiency) if too large (classic B12 deficiency). B12 and folate are now known to repair DNA/genetic disturbances (in big enough doses). These nutrients also support methylation in the liver – when this pathway doesn’t work we have a higher risk of heart disease. DNA changes can be reversed with big enough doses of MetagenB12/folate, Stem Enhance and anti-inflammatory substances such as MetaPure EPA/DHA. Anaesthetics bind with B12 and make it unavailable. We then need huge doses (2000-4000mcg daily) in order to 1. Pull out anaesthetics and 2. Start the DNA repair process. Less than that simply doesn’t cut it.

4. Heavy Metal Toxicity. Heavy metals are positively charged. They create inflammation in the body. Cancer is negatively charged. When there is cancer in the body we always find heavy metal toxicity. This is crucial. There is always toxicity where there is cancer. Radiation and chemo and anaesthetics all add to the toxic load, creating an environment where cancer can return.

5. Thyroid levels. Nearly everyone comes is ‘yep my thyroid is fine’. However, TSH within normal range isn’t perfect, it just isn’t the point where we need medication yet. TSH over 1.84 is dangerous for the entire body. It means that the thyroid is pumping out hormones way more than it should, and that just about any organ in the body can be struggling because of it. If our body is struggling through the thyroid – it also slows down liver function (detox) gut function (absorption) DNA repair and maintenance (allowing genetic changes which allow cancer)

So that’s just a few thoughts about different things that we can work with long term to create a healthier body where you’re less likely to get another cancer. Chemo, operations and radiation are obviously toxic… but if you know how your body has coped (bioimpedance analysis, live blood screenings, kinesiology for heavy metals/allergies/emotional support than you have a much much better chance long-term….

So, these are a few of the things we do for cancer.  We work systematically through a detox process, using testing processes to guide us as to what needs work first, and we slowly but surely work on the ‘health’ of your body instead of focussing on the disease.  By working on the ‘health’ of the body, it’s creating an environment where cancer finds it harder to survive.

More and more reasons to avoid Genetically Modified Foods

Monday, June 24th, 2013

Genetically modified foods are in a large amount of our foods – and most of us won’t know it. How could we? When GM foods are highly refined and are ingredients in packaged foods, Australian law doesn’t require any labelling indicating their presence! Any ingredients such as soy, corn, vegetable oil, and canola oil are highly likely to be genetically modified. Basically, if it doesn’t say it’s not, it IS.

GM foods are not only a danger to our health, they have the potential to destroy the environment – their effects are already causing wide-scale damage, particularly for birds, bees, and waterways. In fact, the Russian and European governments have moved to ban GM seeds and associated pesticides due to their destructive ecological effects. A single grain of corn covered in a GM-produced pesticide used the US, neonicotinoid, is enough to kill a bird.  Of particular concern are the declining bee populations globally. Over 90% of wild bees have been wiped out in the US, and the main culprit is genetically modified seeds and the pesticides used on them. Bees play a huge role in the food we eat – pollination is essential for healthy crops and healthy produce. Without bees, we won’t be able to grow enough crops to feed the world.  According to Dr Ken Walker, senior entomologist at Museum Victoria;

“You think of all the fruit and vegetables that we eat – without pollination that wouldn’t occur. You think of all the fruit and vegies we eat – sometimes you might get a tomato or a piece of fruit that isn’t as luscious or isn’t as large, and that is because it hasn’t been well pollinated. And so the tree says, well if it’s not well pollinated I’m not going to put as much energy into making a good piece of fruit. So pollination is an enormous thing for us.”

So, it’s crucial that we avoid GM foods and protest their production by refusing to buy products with GM ingredients. To find out which foods in Australia contain genetically modified ingredients, visit www.truefood.org.au.

HCG Rapid Weight Loss: Safe, Easy, Effective, PROVEN!!!

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

HCG:  the safest, fastest, easiest way that we’ve ever found to lose weight IF it’s done properly.  Without detoxification, balancing hormones, HCG can make people a toxic and emotional mess.  At New Leaf, we use a combination with natural therapies which:

*  detoxification supplements which detox fat and blood and toxins are being released (hugely important to stop rebound weight issues)

*  do VLA Bio-impedance Screenings so that you KNOW what is going on in your body – fat mass, muscle mass, inflammation, toxicity, metabolism.  One of the worst things about weight loss is hitting those ‘stalls’.  With VLA Bio-impedance Screenings, we can see if it’s because you’re gaining muscle mass, getting more hydrated, releasing toxins and storing fluid to dilute them…  All of which gives you the information you need in order to stay focussed, positive and switched on.  Most naturopaths do not have our experience in dissecting this information for you – and don’t know what to do specifically on HCG.  We’re HCG specialists at New Leaf!

*  balance blood sugar:  some people need extra support.  If blood sugar isn’t balanced we can feel hungry (or starving), have highs and lows of energy, poor sleep/insomnia, and feel stressed.

*  break down scar tissue in the abdomen:  With Chi Nei Tsang Abdominal Massage we can ensure your organs through the abdomen (liver, gall bladder, kidneys, adrenals, reproductive organs, bowels, bladder, spleen, pancreas, lungs) are functioning properly.  Amazing treatment protocol that improved function of all of these major organs in your body.

*  kinesiology for self sabotage (ever experienced that with weight issues??!!).  Put on weight, sabotage your whole day?  Can’t stop eating once you start?  Let’s start working on those self-beliefs that don’t serve you for your goals:  “I’m not worth it”  “I can’t do it”  “I can’t do it without support”  “It’s too hard making two meals at night time”.  If you think about sabotage, they’re generally just thoughts that don’t serve us and don’t help us to move forwards in life.
