We work with many weight loss challenges in our clinic, and insulin resistance is huge! We have a machine that tells us on the spot how ‘insulin resistant’ someone is. This is a pre-diabetic condition which medically doesn’t get picked up due to the fact that it’s NOT diabetes. Medically (and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this) they are always waiting for tests to be bad enough to 1. put us on medication; 2. send us to a specialist or 3. operate.
I tell my clients all the time ‘thank goodness they didn’t find anything!!’. Insulin resistance means that the cells are not taking in insulin easily and/or the internal mechanism of the cell which deals with insulin isn’t working.
One of my clients yesterday has been exercising his butt off, changing his diet and weight hasn’t come off. Yesterday his insulin resistance was huge (about 6x maximum level for ’safe’ insulin levels – no wonder his body isn’t losing weight. The small amounts of carbohydrates he’s having (fruits, rice crackers, bread…hmmm, and cereals) are simply storing as fat. His body can’t handle them at the moment.
By the way, insulin is a very inflammatory hormone when out of whack – it can be a major cause of obesity, heart disease, diabetes and pain.
Luckily we have some fabulous products which help reverse insulin resistance.

We’re having a few small talks in November 2009, about pain drugs – getting off the pain drug merry-go-round! Sounds like a familiar story for someone you know and love? Or you maybe? Without drugs life just isn’t worth living, but with the drugs it’s not much chop either??!!
Pain drug useage is so common, people don’t think twice about it. Panadols are $2 for 24 tablets – how easy it is to get addicted to these drugs and what are they doing to our health? An aspirin a day for the Over 50’s; so many people on blood thinners, blood pressure tablets, pain killers, many drugs which are seen to be as life-long habits. One per day. Easy. Not that we’re saying get off your drugs, but there are other alternatives which many doctors and specialists simply don’t know about.
The problem with the body is that everytime we take a drug we are not just affecting the system we want to affect. Blood thinners don’t just thin the blood, they thin the gut lining (often causing leaky-gut which we see easily in our live blood analysis) too. Blood pressure tablets aim at slowing blood pressure, but it often causes side effects such as weight gain and exhaustion. Pain drugs numb the pain but don’t fix the problem.
What’s the solution? Come along to our free talk on Wednesday morning or Thursday evening, meet Madonna & see what New Leaf Natural Therapies has to offer!
Everyone gets $150 bonus for attending – can you pass that up??

I did another session today on Radio 4BC with Alex Bernard: the callers asked about chronic sinusitis; magnesium deficiency in the soil (and foods) and a wife with iron deficiency.
The poor girl with the chronic sinusitis has been treating it medically for sometime, with lots of doses of anti-biotics. The problem with anti-biotics is that although it helps in the short-term it doesn’t help the long-term problem – the immune system isn’t functioning properly. Rhinocort and claryntyne seem to work in the short term but long term the problem simply returns – the cause of the inflammation hasn’t been found. What can we do? We can do a live blood analysis and determine how active the immune system is, along with the gut. If there is leaky gut that needs healing before the sinusitis can ever be healed. We can do some food or environmental sensitivity testing and immune balancing with kinesiology. We would also provide some supplementation to really kick the body into action, reduce the inflammation of the sinuses and prevent further damage of the gut.
Another gentleman asked why Australian soils are magnesium deficient. It is my understanding that it’s not just magnesium, but many other minerals as well that are very deficient, and that over 70% of Aussies are magnesium deficient – of course lots of other things deplete this mineral such as coffee, tea, stress, insomnia as well as many drugs.
And with the lady who has long-term iron deficiency, it was asked if liquid iron tonics were better than tablet iron supplements. This may be true except that it’s more ‘dodgy forms’ of iron which cause constipation (the concern) so when naturopaths prescribe iron we use good forms such as ‘diclycinated iron’ which is absorbed without causing constipation. If the stomach or small intestine are not working properly, we don’t absorb iron very well either…we break it down firstly in the stomach and then absorb in the small intestines…
Until next week,

SIBO, Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth is a reasonably new discovery, or at least has finally been proven within the medical and naturopathic fields. For years naturopaths have worked on clearing ‘bad large intestinal bacteria’ with reasonable to good results, but when the intestinal growth is in the small intestine, instead of the large intestine, there are no tests which indicate where the infestation is, and results may not be as good. Detoxification of the intestines has always been hugely important for preventing disease and illness, naturopathically.
The problem is that symptoms of gut issues: bloating, burping, belching, wind, flatulence, diarrhoea, constipation (irritable bowel syndrome) can be either a small or large intestine issue.
For those of us who do kinesiology we are blessed with the ability to check where the overgrowth is (and it is often through the entire digestive tract) and what the infestation is made of: parasites, fungus, candida, bacteria, viral etc. Thank goodness for kinesiology…
And of course, SIBO is hugely indicated in many health issues: it has been found that 80-100% of chronic fatigue syndrome sufferers, as well as those with fibromyalgia suffer from SIBO – 80-100%. i’m sure SIBO will be indicated in reversing chronic disease in the future. It really gives a new perspective on treating the gut first – an old naturopathic adage…

Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia are 2 of the most frustrating ‘disease states’ these days. Medically, there is no ‘proof’ for either Chronic Fatigue or Fibromyalgia, so doctors or patients diagnose based on a lack of other diagnosis, and are often given advice like ‘take a holiday’, ‘take some anti-depressants’ or pain-killers which really don’t do a lot in these chronic health problems. Of course, anyone who takes these drugs know that they are poor substitutes for a healthy life…
In Europe, in 2009, it states in medical literature that there is no cure for chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia and that the only treatment is anti-depressant therapy! And yet, naturopathically at least, it has been found that both disease states have chronic magnesium deficiencies; small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO); the energy-creating mechanisms (Krebs Cycle; Citric Acid Cycle) aren’t working properly and neither are the detoxification processes in the body.
Naturopathically, these are the keys to our success! Detoxify, lots of magnesium and energy-creating nutrition, clear SIBO …

Kinesiology: the definition of kinesiology is a little tricky since there are so many forms, developed with different processes in mind. In general kinesiology is about muscle movement and muscle testing, therefore we use muscle testing to find out what’s going on inside the body. We use different ‘muscle testing’ techniques depending on who we are treating and what we are treating them for.
Kinesiology was developed originally in the 1950’s by renegade chiropractors in the U.S., who were sick to death of treating the same condition week in, week out. George Goodheart went to China and learned acupuncture philosophy, so acupressure and acupuncture meridians, points, and emotions are highly integrated within most kinesiology models.
Physios used ‘kinesiology’ techniques in the 1950’s as well to find out how damaged a persons muscles were after a bout of polio, or after the polio vaccines, so we add in the structural muscular knowledge from this side of medicine as well. Richard Utt, Gordon Dickson ND & Charles Krebs PhD all developed various kinesiology processes which have created the overall process now known as LEAP (Learning Enhancement Advanced Acupressure) system which helps people with learning problems, memory issues, behavioural problems such as ADHD, ADD, Aspergers, Autism and more.
Carl Ferrari D.C. combined chiropractic with Touch for Health and other modalities to develop N.O.T. (Neural Organisational Technique) which is fabulous in re-booting the nervous system from head to toe, supporting long-term issues such as whiplashes, jaw and hip problems, scoliosis and more. Both Linda Hoggard ND and Madonna Guy ND have been using N.O.T. since 1996 and have found it invaluable in treating long term health problems such as chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. Jacqueline Dekoke ND is the primary practitioner dealing with finding allergies, dealing with sensitivities and helping overcome long term immune system issues with the Endocrine and Immune Balancing processes.
All of our kinesiologists are also naturopaths so we utilise our knowledge within both spheres to ensure people get the most out of our treatments. The types of kinesiology that we do are very non-invasive: we may find a time-line that’s important to clear (ie, father unwell at 8 years old, creates a fear pattern in our brain around loss or lack of security for example) but we don’t delve on these old patterns very long, we simply store the information and move on, clearing the stressors as we find them.

So much is now known about the ageing process that wasn’t known 15 years ago. It’s what I love about current research and attending symposiums on genetic research, true anti-ageing ‘medicine’ and reversing chronic disease. This is what we do here at New Leaf.
We have technology such as Frequency Specific Microcurrent which helps reduce inflammation, pain and chronic disease patterns, we use supplements which increase Stem Cell Production, we have supplements which gently repair and regenerate areas of the body, brain and nervous system. We have listened and learned from experts all around the world who are using natural therapies to reverse dementia, depression and type II diabetes.
We can see in our live blood analysis when people already have a ‘dodgy gene’ activated within their immune system. What’s really exciting is that seems to take 3-4 months to reverse. Studies in the USA show that we can reverse 70-80 dodgy genes every 3-4 months with a healthy lifestyle, supplementation and a good mental attitude. There’s a particular white blood cell called a monocyte which should have only 1 nucleus. When it has 2 or more nucleii, it means we’re on a downhill slide of ‘dodgy gene activation’. It is very well known now, that just because we have the gene for something, doesn’t mean we will get the disease. The disease must be ‘activated’ somehow, usually by our diets and lifestyle.
Some medications at the symposium in June 2009 were mentioned as being drugs which activated dodgy genes in many study participants.
We are confident that a healthier way of life is available to everyone on the planet. We know from experience that 99% of people can be helped. We look forward to nurturing many clients in years to come take their health to a level they never thought was possible.

A lot of people are concerned about the interactions between the medications they are taking from their doctor, and natural supplements. Others hear from the specialists that natural therapies do absolutely nothing and not to waste their time. It’s a frustrating world we live in when we are bombarded with differing opinions and information all the time.
The way we work, here at New Leaf Natural Therapies, for our naturopathic clients, is that we do a range of tests and look for healthy levels of nutrients in your body and prescribe accordingly. It may differ from what your doctor or specialist has mentioned since they are looking for disease. So you see, we are looking for different things. Medically, doctors are trying to work out what medication they can prescribe to alleviate your symptoms. We are looking for a way to balance your body so that it comes back into harmony.
Some doctors simply don’t understand natural therapies, and some naturopaths don’t understand the benefits of doctors and specialists. Both have their place and both are necessary to get the world well. We try to work in with your doctors, and we hope they’ll work with us.
So if you’re taking some medications from your doctor and are concerned that we’ll tell you to go off them, don’t! It’s up to you and your doctor to decide when you are healthy enough to make that choice!
Balance is the key.

Have you experienced kinesiology? We love kinesiology at our clinic, it’s a big part of who we are and what we do! when we were setting up the clinic we knew that it was not only important, but absolutely necessary that our practitioners understood and used kinesiology as an integral part of the way they worked, and that’s what we’ve achieved!
Madonna has been doing kinesiology since 1995 or so, and teaching touch for health for over 10 years… Linda and Madonna have been training together for many years and have travelled all around Australia (and to New York) to learn from the top kinesiologists available. Jacqueline learnt amazing techniques through her experiences in sensitivity balancing, and did courses such as Touch for Health many years ago. She does most of our ‘endocrine balancing’, ‘immune balancing’ and ’sensitivity testing and treatments’ at our clinic.
There are so many types of kinesiology, it’s really hard to say how it works and what it does. We do everything from Structural Kinesiology to Counselling and emotional kinesiology, LEAP (Learning Enhancement Advanced Protocol); Muscle balancing with Touch for Health; NOT (Neural Organisational Technique); SIPS (Stress Indicator Points System); Heart Healing and lots more.
Most health problems link to emotional issues, the most common being rage & anger, fear & anxiety, pain & punishment, depression and escape, submission & freeze: we find those emotional links and ‘diffuse’ the nervous system so that it starts to act ‘consciously’ rather than ‘unconsciously’. It’s often quite subtle, but it really kicks the nervous system into action and helps people hugely!
Have you ever felt like you weren’t in control of your emotions? You wanted to be happy, you tried to be happy, but it just wasn’t that easy? Kinesiology can help to find those ‘deep survival patterns’ and reduce the impact of them on your day to day lives. We help people from all walks of life get on top of their health problems. Give us a call and see how you can help you today!

We use a really cool system in our fat loss programme – a machine which lets us know EXACTLY what is going on with your body composition, each and every step of the way! Your body composition is the key to longer-lasting fat-loss! It’s simple, we want you to maintain OR ADD TO your muscle mass, and we want you to decrease fat mass and excess cellular fluid. Our practitioners: Madonna Guy ND, Jacqueline Dekoke ND and Linda Hoggard ND all have specific training in Bio-Impedance Analysis – which accurately measures your body composition. Our girls also know when things are going wrong on the road to good health – have you been stressed, sabotaging yourself, given up on exercise. Our weekly sessions keep you motivated and up and running so you get trim and stay trim long term.
The number on the scales is just a number. Imagine this scenario: I hopped on the scales on Saturday and only weighed 200g less than the week before (bummer) – when I did the Bio-Impedance Analysis, however, I found that my fat mass had reduced by 700g and my muscle mass had increased by 500g. So it was only a net loss of 200g. The brain only wants the number (of course) but people get that and so much more with us!
Our fat-loss programme is designed to prevent thyroid disease, hashimotos, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and much more. Come on in and give it a try!
